Bull Shark Encounter: Bimini, Bahamas

Ойын-сауық

Witness the majesty of this large bull shark that ventured into the marina while we were cleaning fish after a successful day of fishing on the ocean. This behavior is a testament to bull sharks acute sense of smell, an ability that plays a crucial role in its survival and ability to excel in a wide array of aquatic habitats.

    Oh it is not harmful for the fish. But sharks get a connection with mankind and food, and that is a trigger for more shark attacks on humans. For example, this is why it is forbidden to feed sharks in Florida.

    Actually, because of sharks proclivity to migrate, it takes several years and a consistent feeding schedule for usually the second of two generations of sharks to successfully associate humans and human behavior as a source of food. That being said, just don't feed them. Also, bull sharks are "local sharks" which live close to their homing grounds. So, seriously, don't do it.

    Saw the video of him and another gentleman in water a little less than waist deep. The Bull swam around both of them and came in from behind, angled its body to the left, clamped down on his left leg, shook its head (damned near knocked him over backwards) and swam away. The guy he was talking to carried him to the beach. Where his calf had been long strips of flesh were dangling from the crescent shaped wound. Hard to believe that video came out over six years ago, still remember it like yesterday...

    @@missedshot9235 Your writing reminds me of Peter Benchley's sparse prose that brought " Jaws" to life even before the movie was released. After Dr. Ritter's experience of losing a calf muscle to a bull shark as you vividly recalled, there were no further video clips of him wading with the bulls. The man obviously misread those toothy beasts and now carries a lifelong reminder of his hubris.

    as cool and rare of an opportunity as something like this is, it's also a wonderful way to keep that shark coming back to shore( can't exactly tell how isolated that water way is judging by the video but I can tell that there are CLEARLY people hanging around that area.) Considering that bull sharks ARE man eaters who don't need to be provoked to attack it might not be wise to do that. other than that it's definitely an interesting video.

    Shane Keelinghamm It's not simply that bull sharks are territorial.( not arguing that they aren't because duh.) It's that they make territory out of the same places we like to swim in, and considering bull sharks are arguably the most adaptable shark species currently on earth; able to live in cold/warm salt/ fresh water. That's a LOT of opportunity for our species to butt heads or in their case sink their teeth into our heads. (Yes it's more likely they go for our legs but that's besides the point.) as for those not being swimming waters, thanks for basically saying what Toby did, but try telling that to drunk tourists.(Although in hindsight if a tourist WAS drunk enough to think swimming there was a good idea no amount of warning signs would save them wouldn't they?) TL;DR Bull sharks are omnipresent assholes just doing their own thing, And thank you Captain Obvious.

  • @The7Purplekirbies

    @The7Purplekirbies

    Shane Keelinghamm nah, conservation efforts are pretty effective when it comes to animals on the endangered species list. and even if some species of sharks go extinct the bull shark is likely to be one of the more successful breeds due to their range and (consequently) their diet. on top of that shark fin soup is mostly eaten in Asian countries which bull sharks I'm pretty sure they don't frequent. African waters on the other hand...well there's another story.

"Remember ~ if you go in that water, you are much more afraid of them than they are of you." Hal on his youtube channel Sharks Happen. Check it out sometime if you like; no hype or weirdness just a cool guy doing his thing. He says the top 3 bad sharks you don't want to encounter are the tiger, great white, and bull shark. Bull's are not just aggressive they are more likely to predate (eat you) if you happen to have an encounter. Cheers
