Group B was so intense that it was banned for being too dangerous. This was because there were little to no rules with how powerful you could make the cars. One driver at the time said that the cars were too fast for their brain to react. Racing in Group B pushed drivers to their absolute limit.

They were so skillful and had the balls of the size of Jupiter. Every race was a matter of life or death. A modern form of gladiators, that we luckily and hopefully, never will see again. But at the same time, it is so amazing what they did, during the circumstances that they had in those days. It was pure art at its finest.

I wish I’d lived during the era of group b. I’ve heard stories that it became even more popular than formula 1 at the time. Rally was the shit. The closest thing you’ll ever get to this kind of era these days is probably rally legends in San Marino. Held every year around October. They have group b cars like this, some of them are the actual genuine cars that raced in those times. They’re fascinating to see in real life. Just how little there is to them and how stupidly unsafe they were. And the best part is they’re not just on display, they’re actually driven on the stages (non competition though because once group b was banned those cars were never allowed to enter a timed event again as far as I’m aware). To actually see them being driven and hear the distinct engine noises those cars made is something special. And the spectators can get a little wild like in the 80s too, standing out in the middle of the road in huge numbers waving flags and setting off fireworks and flares. It’s as close to the group b days as you’ll get in the modern era. I highly recommend it.

It's mostly a European thing, but it does extend beyond. There is a bit of rally love in the US too... Ken Block's American and whilst not a terribly successful rally driver, certainly very famous around the world for his rally-esque show driving. Group B was a set of rules where the manufacturers had more freedom than other classes. So they got powerful engines, huge changes to the whole drive train, even more lightened bodywork and chassis and basically anything people in the 80's could think of to go faster. Talking tiny, lightweight, rwd, mid-engine hatchbacks that were both turbocharged and supercharged. This did come at the expense of the safety of the drivers. Throw in the nutter crowds of the 80's and there were some horrible incidents. Rally today is still powerful, still drive in absurdly dangerous locations. But there is better crowd control (although you can still get damn close) and the modern cars are safer and better equipped to handle and control the power. But Group B was just wild. Kinda like a lot of motorsports today, they are faster, but more tame at the same time.

Fun Fact: Those are not Racetracks. It´s just whatever remotely resembles a road that leads to the next destnation of the Race. They were not specially prepared for the race either, at least the surface they drove on, there was some safety meassures on the roadsides sometimes, but thats it.

Rally in Portugal had some of the best tracks. Portugal having a lot of mountains and having lived through a 40 year long dictatorship, ending in 1974, meant it was rather underdeveloped in the 80's. What happens when you have plenty of mountain trails to rally on? Lots of fun, but also a lot of danger. Can you guess where the crashes that killed Group B took place? In Portugal Group B was pretty big. Unfortunately the accidents that happened in Portugal not only killed Group B, but Rally overall in Portugal. There have been barely anything in Portugal.😭 P.S. 11:35 "Seu calhau!" That's Portugal alright.

The drivers had co-drivers, basically navigators, in the car with them. The co-driver has Course Notes that he uses to give the driver info on what's ahead. Usually involving severity of turn, direction of turn, any relevant elevation changes such as a crest that would get the car light (or airborne), etc. All done in a verbal shorthand. Oh, and all done two or three turns ahead. A good co-driver is worth his weight in carbon fiber/kevlar weave.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but when you were commenting on the driving at night, I think what most people who are new to rally underestimate to importance of the guy on the passenger seat, as he is literally going through a notebook giving advice on how tight the upcoming corners are, how fast you can go through them, bumps and all that. The driver has to rely on him as you can't properly learn each and every stage in advance. Imagine sitting on the passenger seat in one of those, going through a literal notebook and reading the stuff out over the noise, without missing a line or mixing something up for 10-30 minutes straight. You'd hardly have time to look out of the window and it wouldn't help either, as you'd have to give advice on the stuff you can't yet see. I'd probably rather try driving than that :D

Group B rally, like you probably know, doesn't exist anymore. But it was held on public roads, that's why the people were allowed to stand so close to the racing cars. I'm not 100% sure, but i believe it was mainly European (drivers & tracks).

The track is the same in the dark you just have to rely on your navigator not to mess up his track notes. Used to rally in the UK driving a Ford RS Escort turbo in 1985-8,worst thing that ever happened to me was after a big jump my gear box fell out and we went through a stone wall into the trees which we bounced off and ended upside down in a ditch of water,i broke my ankle my navigator had a trouser accident but other than that was okay, thank God for roll cages but my poor RS was wrecked lol

Group B: Insane power, very little control (the Audi Quattro had well over 500bhp). Monte Carlo probably the scariest circuit. Check out Ari Vatanen for a masterclass. Remember, all these cars are road legal, you can buy them, although they’re super expensive now. As for fans, there are tales of drivers having to remove peoples fingers from the car windscreens after a stage, that’s how close they were. Other recommendations… try the WRC Ypres Rally 2021 for modern stuff, Gigi Galli for some insane car control, and for non rally I suggest British Touring Car Championship (a non contact sport that keeps having to remind drivers that it’s non contact)

How you think it is even possible to control 4wd cars with heavy front and without power-steering. Even Fiat 131 Abarth was pretty hard at steering without power assistance, but it was light and wonderful RWD Group 4 bolide.
