@@DavidFinchartist I really Gotta ask you this, i got a lead Holder too i like to use. But, the leads Keep getting Less and less "thin"/Sharp. Do you have a good tip how to sharpen it? (Normally i use a knife) Cause i see you make these fine thin lines with yours

I LOVE how he said drawing and designing the environment is often times harder than drawing the figures. It is SO very true. Your background/environment can make or break your character.

I mean, you can say the opposite is true too 😆 A shit background looks out of place on a well drawn chsracter

When I draw a cityscape , I like coming up with histories for the buildings. Make a faded painted-on-brick sign for a building, partially covered by a lit billboard, for instance. Even if nobody else knows what I see for the history of the city in my mind, they have clues to inform them in making their own city history of the mind.

It may not be apparent to a viewer, but they do feel it when you put that kind of thought into your work! It's all about capturing a mood, and I love your approach.

Never did like drawing buildings or even mountains but I think by looking at this really puts a light bulb in my brain hopefully it works the next time I draw

I like to use light box and just keep perspective grids pre-made to use under paper. I then map out rough shapes like you did on that with pen for dark lines. Once I have basic shapes (cubes/rectangles), I then take the actual page I want to draw buildings on and put it over the rough shape paper on the light box and free hand in the pencil lines and buildings. This saves me time on the drawing of perspective grids. If you do it digital, it gets very easy too since you can just reshape the grid as you see fit and draw on layers. Ive also printed out grids to use as needed. The ink lines are all hard edged and ruled and easy to see with lightbox. I can then get more organic looking and natural lines with pencil and detail over them on the actual page. Its basically same thing you are doing, just with less time on the grids and not as much mess with the erasing. Works for me at least.

Your videos have really helped me with perspective, I'm not great yet but I understand it. That's better than where I was before. I actually considered not drawing backgrounds but what you said about how backgrounds in e.g Batman comics can catapult you into that world with the way it captures your attention. That touched me and i would like to make backgrounds like that, rich backgrounds with history.

now, i walk in the street, or in some neighborhood, i try to find my horizon line, and the vanishing points of different things, and the fact that different things have different vanishing points (not only two), made it much easier and clearer for me to understand why is what.. thank you for all the invaluable knowledge you're sharing with us, this is so generous of you..

Maybe not as popular, but I agree. They're so necessary. It's tough to resist just putting up videos that I know will get more views, but I want this channel to be about the things I think are most important in an artist's development.

Again, knocking it out if the ballpark, Dave 👍 I think a lot of artists struggle with drawing cities, despite having done it for years, and need a good refresher now and then. Thanks for another fantastic video! Backgrounds and scenery are so hard for me, but you make it look so easy! I’m going to try drawing my next background without relying on a ruler - I think that is part of why my backgrounds never really have that “lived in” vibe that you mention. Would also love to see an updated version of the older video you did (some years ago, I think) about placing your characters in a scene like this - that is what I struggle with more than any other aspect of drawing. Thanks for putting in the time for us. As someone who's in the midst of trying to learn perspective, it's a bit of a blinding insight to me to be able to set things up so you can draw more naturally, rather than having to rule every edge and contour. Plus it looks like a lot more fun.

I'm glad! That was a huge thing for me when I started. Ruling every line and referencing perspective points was a nightmare.

for me it is helpful since i kinda draw only superheroes and villians! its nice to see that comic artists are still trying to help people so their drawing get better.

learned little in middle school when I tool industrial class, same in university! everything else I've learned watching your videos!

I'd love to see a video of how you deal with characters interacting with general objects, Mr.Finch. Riding bikes, kicking up debris, leaving physical impact on other people, grabbing soft things tightly. The world's interactions through your eyes, really. Huge fan of your work, by the way.

Like many other artists I've always hated and avoided drawing backgrounds, but after watching your video I feel like maybe it's something I can one day get to enjoy. The only thing I still very much struggle with is how I'm going to incorporate my own art style into the backgrounds... It just ends up looking like two very different pictures (the character and the background) glued together lol

Thank you, we've been learning so much from you. A request, can you please do a video on natural environment, like a hero trying to get through a dangerous swamp maybe ?? 😁 A couple of tips from you about drawing a natural environment (with lighting & shading of thick vegetation) in comics would be of tremendous help. Hope I am not requesting much.

I've learned this basic techniques in my elementary school decades ago and never thought how deep this skill to master.

Great video, Dave! Minor critique: Remember to leave yourself time to show the finished state of the drawing you want your viewer to see - on mobile for instance the entire drawing is blocked by overlay links to other related videos (not sure if you can control that as the creator, I’m guessing you can’t) for the last 10 or so seconds.

I have that tool, it's a nautical plotter, but it's great for keeping your line straight.

This is how you teach perspective. So many tutorials are too basic and simplified, that its hard to apply in a comic book setting. My only complaint is that starting out it's hard to see the initial penciling because it's too light for the camera to pick up, though I understand why it's light lol. There's a MUCH NEEDED niche for advance perspective that's for sure!

Hey, Mr. Finch, wonderful video as always! I fell in love with your work back in '13 with "Knight Terrors", and I've been a fan ever since. I can't begin to tell you how much your videos have been helping me out! As an artist, I always struggle with drawing buildings because I never know how I want them to look, and I tend to get overwhelmed, which results in my buildings looking flat and boring. Your buildings always evoke personality, and they feel like they have a history behind them, which is so amazing to watch. How long did it take for you to get comfortable enough with drawing buildings from your mind, and do you have any tips? Thanks, again!

Thanks a lot, Joshua! I kind of had to just jump into it when I started working, since I really devoted very little time to it when I was learning. You really get your weaknesses exposed that way. It's hard to say when it got comfortable, but I got there eventually. The best tip I have is to break down the process the way I'm doing it here so you don't have to think about everything at once.

How frequently are you going to the lead pointer during a process like this? Your lead seems to be perpetually sharp, but I don't see any clear indication that you're stopping to sharpen.

I thought it was really funny when you started laying out the grid, because despite learning all the concepts behind perspective, I was trying to figure out just why I couldn't seem to get the hang of the specialized perspective tools on the app I'd been using, since other people found them so useful, and I started to wonder if _maybe_ I needed some kind of grid that could give me a concept of all three demensions of space at once while I was drawing. Guess I'm not alone here...

Mr.Finch I've seen you use that parallel ruler in other videos, and it looks very high quality, do you think you could respond with a link? (also i looked for similar ones but I couldn't find any that had measurements on them and weren't cheap quality.
