I don’t have much of a tip because I’m still in my first year of community college, but one thing I learned is not to compare yourself! Although, it’s easier to say than do sometimes 😓 It’s rather common advice, but I think it can also be applied to the freelancing world as well. I’ll keep your advice in mind, Jenn! Thank you!

Freelancing has been quite prominent now as an official job title, and that's a great sign because I've been a freelancer for over 4 years now and let me just say I've never ever regretted the idea just one bit! My mom at first was against it because it was not stable (well it wasn't back then), but now seeing the community's growing day by day makes everything so much credible and secured! Thanks for these tips, Jenn! Particularly with being PUNCTUAL and ON DEADLINE, cuz yea..they don't freaking care where you work, when you work...YOU JUST HAVE TO GET THE FREAKING WORK DONE ON TIME!!! And also, attitude is everything...cuz they don't wanna work with someone who's arrogant and stinky and late!

Thanks for the video, Jenn! I'm a freelance writer and editor with 3+ years of experience post-graduation. Being a freelancer is quite the hustle. In order to make money - not even a living - you have to constantly be seeking jobs and keeping your name in the business. I'm not quite good at that hustle (I'm actually terrible at regularly seeking opportunities) and found that it has been best for me to have a job outside of my writing. By having a part- or full-time job outside of my passion, I can stay financially stable and have a creative outlet that brings me joy. I've heard from many writers over the years that their careers didn't take off until they were well into their adult years, which is why many of them recommend having a career outside of their passion. If you're in college or a recent graduate, a great way to connect and build a business is by looking at internships. I interned at a local magazine in my city and that introduced me to other opportunities and connections. Plus, it gave me great experience for my resume! Another great way to get your name out there is to make friends with other artists and freelancers that way you can collaborate on projects. You can find those people by signing up for a class (at a community college or elsewhere), going to local arts and culture events, or by finding online groups on Facebook and such. Having friends who share the same hustle or artistic drive gives you the opportunity to share your experiences together and connect.

This!! I am also building my side hustle as I hold a full time job. Being financially stable really does help keep your passion and creative energy alive, it's just one less stress that could potentially drain the energy you need to create. The modern era has also opened up a world of possibilities when it comes to networking, there is no better time to be an entrepreneur!

This is really inspiring! I’ve done so many side hustles since college, got my bachelor’s degree and been employed, but there seem to be something that’s missing. I’ve been freelancing full-time (photography, social media marketing) since last year and I’ve never been happier with what I do, this don’t feel like work and I actually earn more. Thanks for the tips Jenn! ✨ Glad I found your channel

Finding a community is fundamental. Not just a community of those on the "inside", who are doing what you're doing, but a client community as well that you can serve. Most freelancers totally overlook the need to *serve* and choosing a community is the first step toward that.

Freelancer photographer and I will definitely find time to start on my website now that we are in quarantine thanks for the motivation Jenn! I totally agree on having a side job. My plan last year was to get a part time and have time for my photography as well. Like you said it all takes baby steps I’m slowly getting my equipment together and getting clients which are people I’ve met or been recommended to. Definitely takes time I did free work for a while as well but I’ve definitely put my skills into practice and took classes during that time and now since last year I’m excited on starting my own business on something I love. 🤗

Great tips, Jen! You are so natural on camera, and so confident! I really admire your business and all you've accomplished. I have been a freelance videographer for almost 4 years. I would also HIGHLY recommend having a safety net before going full-time, especially during these challenging times. I agree, that the #1 key to success is being good to people - ALL people. You really never know who's going to bring you a huge opportunity in the future! I got a massive opportunity because I joined our local chamber of commerce. It pays to make connections everywhere, and just be a positive person who folks want to be around. :) Keep up the awesome work, girl!

Agree 100%!! I've been in the video industry for the past few years as well but not as a freelancer. It's so interesting hearing about what life is like on that side because I am starting to veer that way. So far being good to people and not expecting anything in return has only yielded good things! I feel like people fail to realize working with you involves being around your energy, and if you're not someone who's pleasant to be around then why would they want to bother?

I love the word ambivert, you're the first person I've heard use it! I feel you on live networking, for me it's like giving a presentation or competing in a sport. It takes a lot of energy then I need to go home and recover. My favorite kind of networking is the virtual kind and it's perfect while we're all quarantining. Whenever I'm in a webinar or a zoom training (almost every day now) and someone says something interesting or really helpful I reach out to them after to thank them specifically for what resonated then I ask them a question. The question is specific so it's easy to reply to, a follow on to what they said, something I saw on their website or a piece that they wrote or from a video of a different presentation. Even if they don't reply I can reach out to them in the future and reference where we met and that will keep me on their radar. So much easier than live networking!

This was very helpful thank you. I am trying to build up my branding as a youthful 50 year old showing people you can still look good without breaking the bank or buy all branded from top to toe. I must say i am a very shy person & have never even taken a selfie till this year. So this is really putting myself out there & eating humble pie with the small growths that i have.

I love your advice...at first im also doing blog post for free for some brands now im more on asking for payments and sometimes i say NO to sponsorship if ot doesn't meet what my blog objectives and if doesn't meet what i believe in. I also agree with you that before risk you need to make sure that you have plan B if things didn't work out or what you called safety net. I've been blogging for 5 years now and wanted to do it fulltime but i feel that its not yet the right time..really love your talks. Keep inspiring 😁😊

Jenn, your content is always getting better, this is amazing! Please, do that video on networking. I'm a chemist and work in the industry but it have always been very hard for me to conect professionaly with other people. You'd help me (and I'm sure many others) with your experience!

I feel like networking was something I had a stigma against for a while because I always thought people who used connections couldn't do the work for themselves but I was so wrong. I became a freelance tutor in my second year of university and the first job I ever got was through a friend who recommended me to his other friend. My jobs after that were also through friends of my previous tutee and my friend's own tutee. Networking is CRUCIAL in freelancing. And creating a community is definitely one of the best advices. It gets lonely and I did feel demotivated at times when I was the only person who freelance-tutored seriously or considered it as a serious job.

These tips can seriously apply to anyone! I've worked on small live performance events and when I think about performers that were unfriendly, had an unwelcoming aura, entitled attitude, started arguments, had a pissy attitude, it REALLY never leaves my mind. It doesn't matter how talented they are. I put in the work organizing and all you give me is b*tchiness? Good-bye~ Thanks for the tips Jenn! It's gonna help us all navigating this world!

This is such an important thing it seems(and is), but it’s so scary and kinda like, so hard(?) too? PLEASE JENN! 💜 I believe there are many introverted people like me who wanna establish themselves in the creative space but are clueless cause it involves networking and all. It’d be wonderful if you could make a video on that. ☀️ PS: I love you!!

@@SunshineMalaya Congrats on starting off as a freelancer! I've been one for two years now as a digital marketing manager. I completely agree that saying no can be hard sometimes especially when the money seems so good. Honestly, the less stressed you can make your life as a freelancer the better. What's your insta handle? Would love to watch your journey! :)
