Building Vintage Bomber Seats: 50s Hotrod Langmuir Systems CNC Plasma; The Crazy Casey Roadster Ep18

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello, and welcome back to the channel everyone! Several months ago I came up with the CRAZY idea to scratch-build a pair of “Bomber Seats” for the ‘29 Model A. Fast forwards to 2023, and a move to Nevada afforded me the opportunity to add a #LangmuirSystems #CNCPlasma table to the shop, and that spurred me to finally turn my seat patterns into actual seats!
A big thanks to Karl Fisher ‪@MakeItKustom‬ ,for teaching me a lot of the requisite skills for this project, via his KZread channel, and then for spurring me into action when he released his own #BomberSeat video last week!
I hope you all enjoy this week’s episode! So glad to see you are moving forward with this project. You seem more...relaxed! It is a good look on you. Great seat...don't be so down on yourself: new cutter, new software, new bead roller and techniques. Good job all around. Thanks for sharing and bringing it to the forum. ChelanJim

Thanks Jim! I’m not down on myself; I’m pretty stoked, really. I just (try to) hold myself to a high standard. Thanks for saying hey. Miss everybody…

Wow, a new video! Good to see that you got that plasmatable figured out. So it looks like the software/aligning purgatory is over and the fun starts now!

Cool seat. I am a woodworker and I have always wanted to do one of these out of plywood. I think the layers would give a cool look.

I agree. It would look somewhat appropriate too, because stock seats from cars of this era are wood, so…party on!

Seats turned out really nicely. You going to be running a seat cushion as well? A mate repurposed the old leather off an used couch to cover a seat cushion and it fitted in with his rat rod really well.

Thanks Simon! Yeah, I’m not sure exactly what kind of cushion yet, but I’ll put something in there. I think I’m leaning towards a waxed canvas though; something with a Mil-Surp look to it.

Good seeing your still kicking it in the shop. I've been distracted with pulling some new treasures home. If you have a few mins to lose check out my 34 tudor barn find vid...it was a decent one.

I will look it up. I’m about to crack into those rivets, because I only have so many clecos, but I’m hoping to cover it in a step by step assembly video once I dial in all of my processes. Thanks for sticking with me! -Casey

You’ve been making some good progress Casey. Table seems to be working well. Your seats have a good look for sure. Good to see you again. Been working on my A nonstop and lost count but I’m guessing 200+ hours so far on my repaint but unfortunately no vids. On a side note. This morning at 0430 there was a white out , well on the 25th floor of the Atlantis in Reno, noticed it when I went to retrieve wifey from the slots. Take care my friend. 👍👍👍

Great content, thanks for posting! Looking to buy a Langmuir Pro. Have experience with a CNC Router, so I’m hoping the learning curve isn’t too steep. :)

Thank you very much! CNC experience definitely translates across platforms and machines, but the wild card with the plasma is EMI, since you’ve got such a strong emitter in the cutting unit. After going through the process, my main advice to everyone so far has been to buy the Hypertherm plasma cutter. They make up for a lot of the price difference with their quality workmanship and their very detailed cut charts, BUT the added bonus is that their units seem to be better shielded than a lot of the overseas ones. In the grand scheme of the total purchase it takes it from like $5000 all-in to closer to $7000. That $2000 savings cost me at least 30 solid days of trouble-shooting time. Good luck, and please bug me if you have questions, get stuck…whatever.

Glad to see progress!! A few questions. What transmission are you using and are you using anything to replace the torque tube to prevent axle rotation? Second, do you have a measurement from the radiator mount holes to the engine mounts? Thanks!

  • @crazycaseyscustoms

    @crazycaseyscustoms

    Жыл бұрын

Hey Travis. I’m not 100% sure which transmission it is; it’s a 3 speed, and it’s got a huge drop from first to second, so I’m thinking it might be a truck box. I’m using the rear bones, split in a similar manner to my front bones, to control axle wrap. Radiator to engine mount holes are only about 6-1/2 inches apart, but my radiator is pushed forward a few inches from the mounting holes, so I don’t think you can do much with that info.

I’ve had it in and out of the shop a couple times in the last few months, but infrastructure and customer projects have kept me from making any significant progress on it. I hope to have it back in the shop next month for a big push to get the engine in and fired up.
