so much negativity jeez. definitly not the most raw or affordable build, but that's the point. Nowhere in the title does it say budget or affordable, so dont treat it as anything like that. It's a culmination of years of offroading and colaboration between many companies. Although having a beer keg and a projector is way over the top, who cares. its his choice and if you got offered this opportunity there's no way you'd say no lol. Instead of commenting negativly out of spite or envy or just disgust at how expensive/over the top it is, just be happy for him lol. it's a pretty sick rig and who cares if the Amarok isnt the most capable, or affordable. at least its not another bloody 79 build. I think pat would be just as keen to go camping in a 1986 MQ with an old swag, as he would be with this. Get off your high horse and just let people enjoy this country how they want to. it's not your concern and it never was. Pat's just taken the time to share his build, which sounds pretty good to me. Just my 2 cents :P

Thanks Will, you read my mind mate. Pretty funny you said I'd be just as happy in an 86 MQ with a swag. I've actually got a 1975 G60 Patrol and get just as much joy from that! Appreciate your comments. Cheers, Pat

Great build, not because it was the perfect vehicle, but rather it was what you wanted. I read comments about no low range, not being a monster competition rock crawler, etc, however, those are other people's dream vehicle. This was about you and your desire. That is what makes it so great. My guess is that negative comments stem from a touch of envy. Congratulations and well done! Great video as well, not too much fluff and full of important details.

What a beast. It takes vision (not just $$$) to push the envelope of what's possible with a platform in a coherent way (Amarok in this case). It's clear you've built it just the way you want so congratulations! (also really liked seeing the stories and people behind the build).

A Yank here from out West, Wyoming to be exact. I was in Oz for 6 months a few years ago. Saving up to go back. I didn't get a chance to do any exploring, as I was busy helping a mate move things out to a second station on the Darling river, 20 miles below Tilpa. I was also up at Brewarnia, on a station there. Wonderful people, and a great country!

@@PatCallinans4X4Adventures I was working for Don Macdonald, of Macdonald Wool. His building is just on the edge of town, as you're leaving Dubbo, on the right, before the airport. He was over here shearing sheep in the 80s, and I had an extra bedroom. 35 years later, he calls me up, and wants to know if I'd like to come to Australia, and help him move. He has a place between Dubbo and Orange. Put me in a 24 ft flatbed truck, and I had never driven through a round a bout before! Other driver's got a little excited! I'm driving on the wrong side of the road, in a 24 ft truck. Lots of good memories.

Love all these comments about the no low range from people who clearly have never driven an amarok. I have come from patrols all my life and can still do everything in my no low range Amarok I did in my patrol it's all about line choice. Awesome build mate also people are forgetting your creating a touring 4x4 not a comp spec winch truck.

  • @viktorb9022

@@nickwebb6810 You can have AWD or 4WD in the Amarok. When its the 4WD with low-range and rear-diff-locker, the "4" in "4Motion" is red. The auto-transmission Amaroks, like the one in the video, always have the AWD system, so I dont understand why he choosed this instead of manual with low-range & diff-lock. However, I think you can tow 3.5 tons easily with all Amaroks. Its just a safety restriction and also I guess they want you to buy the auto...

There are number of Rok owners here but not in the same numbers as your Hiluxes, Rangers, Prada’s, Landcruisers 79 series, 100 series, 200 series, Navarras, D Maxes and BT 50s. Amarok probably have the smallest segment of the market. But everyone who has one wouldn’t trade them for love or money.

I'd love to upgrade to a v6 amarok one day. Dead right about the strong chassis and large frame. Hence being one of the most popular sprint cars for the SA ambulance service.

I love what you’ve done. I’m going to go against the tide and say what the hell is a coffee machine and beer keg doing in a 4WD. Are you intending to do trips Vaucluse or Toorak? That aside it looks great. Of course a bigger roof top tent for two would be nice as well but otherwise WOW what a machine. Now how much is all this worth ?

Hang on, you added a 650mm extension of the chassis, with all of the compromises on manuverability, handling and weight, to fit a beer keg in? Very cool build in lots of ways, but you've gone a solid step down in my books. And I'd be impressed if you got any change out of $100,000 for the build, after the Amarok...

What’s the point of going away? you’re bringing your home with you. A good 4wd trip in my opinion is swags set up around a campfire and fold out chairs enjoy a few beverages with your mates but hey if it makes you sleep at night why not. The point is that you don’t have to spent fancy money on a fancy car to get you to the bush and back.

Completely agree that this project is massively unnecessary and incredibly fun at the same time. This wasn't me telling everyone that they should want to do this, it was more of an experiment to try and build something resembling 'my' Ultimate 4X4. And as someone who is just as happy to roll out a swag out the back of my stock 1975 G60, it's nice to have both extremes. It's kind of like going to your favourite greasy burger joint one week, and going to a 5 star restaurant the next.

Great to see something a bit different and full points for actually engineering and showing a bit of the process, noone does that, they throw 35's on a GU as a "budget build" an worry that the flares may not be legal! How the trans temps though? Did you add a cooler? I imagine the torque converter builds up a bit of heat on sand with all that weight and no low range?

Here in Germany the Amaroks spent more time in workshop than on the road. So many issues.... not only trans or engine, but the smaller things that really bother. Window motors or better said the small plastic pieces on the mechanism that brake and leave you without a electric window, the electric seat adjusters etc. . It is built with a VW Golf Spirit. And that doesn´t combine with offload reliability. Sorry, but Toyota or Nissan is the way to go.

  • @PatCallinans4X4Adventures

@@peixinho1973 there in Germany, you don't actually have deserts to drive across, and thousands of miles of corrugations. I've never had window or plastics issues on my seven Amarok's, but have driven them cross-country. The chassis on an Amarok eats any other dual cab for breakfast, so to compare it with a monocoque Golf shows a lack of engineering and off-road knowledge

I dont get these comments. You can have the Amarok with manual transmission and traditional 4WD with a diff-locker in the rear. So your choice... of course you dont want the auto with AWD for offroading.

It would appear Pat is very busy or doesn't read this forum as he has not responded to any comments. I have a few questions. What is the GVM and GCM before and after the mods? What is the build price? as I am looking at a chopped 200 series and would like to compare my options. Is Adelaide the only place that can convert the Amaroks? Can you put a boat loader and tiny on top after the conversion? It is a beautiful build and some great ideas. I just think there could of been better use of space in the back.
