As a kid, I would build cars. Brush painted, then spray cans. Now I'm older, I finally upgraded to an air brush. Getting the hang of it, I have an F-18 I'm using as a test bed for shading and such. I am now building an Italeria KA-6 1/72. I was doing the instrument panel with decals and gave up: they wouldn't conform to the details. Never occurred to me to send them all down flat! Great tip! Great videos!

Hi Dave, thanks, I hope it all works out with great results!
I remember that day. We were home from school because of snow. I woke up later than my brothers and walked into the living room. Everyone else was already watching the TV, and I thought, “oh that’s right! The shuttle launch with the teacher is today!” It was a replay, but I didn’t know that. The excitement of watching it rise was waking me up, but then it exploded, and I must’ve audibly gasped because my mom turned around. It felt like someone hit me with a sledgehammer, because I loved the space program and had all kinds of NASA paraphernalia, books, and magazines. I can’t remember if I cried or not, but those few seconds have been burned into my mind ever since.

Hi LT Models, thanks! I was such a NASA fan back in the day, especially during the shuttle era. I had really hoped to fly in space one day. I even recently tried for the St. Jude/SPACE X flight, the Virgin Galactic/Omaze flight, and the future SPACE X moon shot with that Japanese billionaire. Lost out on all three. These offers really sparked untapped hope after years of knowing I'd remain earth bound. These were all disappointments I didn't need! 😏
GREAT build and WONDERFUL astronauts/NASA tribute! THANK YOU for this.

This brings back memories. I worked at NASA Dryden in the 80s. I remember walking past most of the shuttle astronauts and saying hi. A great bunch of people. I always admired how kind and willing they were to talk. Challenger was hard to take, seeing these fine people around on prior missions. It was a wonderous place to work when I was in my 20s. Thanks for the memories.

Great video yet again! I visited Cape Kennedy space centre 2 years ago and was so excited to see Atlantis on display. The space shuttle is the whole reason as to why I got into Avionics engineering. I remember being stood there as they unveiled it as we finished watching the film and being so close and seeing my “hero” aircraft right in front of me reduced me to tears! Crazy how machines invoke these feelings in us. I remember challenger and Colombia so well and I felt so honoured to see the memorial hall for both crews in the Atlantis exhibit. Hi Ali, I loved the space space shuttle program. I got to see the Atlantis and also Columbia carried on the Boeing NASA 747 flying in to Arizona for a stop over on their way back to Florida after completing missions back in the day. A few days before Columbia was lost I observed a fast bright light go over in the night sky. I knew it was the space shuttle or the ISS. I wish I had noted it down specifically at the time. It would be freaky to know if it had been indeed Columbia. Thanks for your comments!

Great subject build. I always loved the look of the T-38 and F-5 aircraft. Looks like an excellent kit. The one time I got up close and personal with a T-38 was when the Naval Test Pilot School flew one down to our base. I was in charge of catching the plane when it arrived and launching it out when it departed. The thing that impressed me the most was how roomy the cockpits were. The NASA markings look very sporty on this plane. Perfect!!! ❤️👍

I enjoy watching your videos and hearing your stories. I used to work security for Boeing here in WA and as I'm sure you are aware, Boeing is very heavily invested in the space program. Here in WA, Boeing has 2 T-38's that I believe are retired NASA ones, and they use them for chase planes to get in-flight photos of their jumbo's. During my rounds, I would walk around the T-38's. Those are some amazing aircraft. To watch them fly was awesome, especially in close formation with a 747 or a 787.

Beautiful build and☝️great editing! It was fun watching you build while the historical videos played! I’m 60, so I remember all that. Watched the first flight of the 747 because my Grandfather worked at the Everett plant! My Grandmother remarked “This is something you can tell your Grandkids about!” At the time I thought “Whatever!” ( I was 10) Had a buddy in Everett that told me his Uncle was on Apollo 13 when that situation happened. I had no idea the Apollo 13 mission was in danger until years later because the Apollo missions were becoming sooo routine! Dave Lovell is his name. And after I watched the Tom Hanks movie Apollo 13 with Jim Lovell’s cameo, I put two and two together because you could see the family resemblance! Anyway! I do remember where I was when the Challenger incident happened. Playing Darts while stationed at Cannon AFB, N.M. My ex-wife called the shop and told me the space shuttle just blew up at launch. Because I didn’t witness it, I asked “Were there any parachutes?” Wasn’t until I was able to watch the launch on TV did I realize, of course, no parachutes!🥺

Very nice! Id live to see a T38 Thunderbird build. They are Very hard to find on the internet.
I remember the day and where I was... story to follow: We were in assembly in elementary school. I was 7 years old. I was one of the children selected to ask Christa McAuliffe a question once she was in space. In the assembly room (which was the school cafeteria) was an elaborite microphone system and a lot of important looking television and sound people. There were time display units on the wall all ticking the same time in several timezones which I didn't understant (ZULU, EST, PST). We were able to watch the launch in real-time with less than a 1 second delay. The launch was projected on the wall which, at the time, was extremely high-tech and amazing to watch. I knew something was wrong because the flame at the side of one of the boosters didn't look right to me, all of 7 years of age. I mentioned it to a teacher and one of the important sound men. The teacher shushed me, but the man looked and a look of grave danger appeared on his face. Less than 1 minute later, both that sound man and I knew that the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. I said it outloud when many children and even some adults were wondering aloud what had happened. I said, "it exploded," and again I was shushed and scolded by the teacher not to say that. I then said to that teacher, "Why do you want to lie to everyone here and tell everyone something that didn't happen? Why should I be quiet when all you are doing is lying to everyone!?" Much later, I found out those "sound men" were actually NASA communications technicians, and they knew what the problem was as soon as I saw that ploom of flame at the side of the booster. I received a letter from that sound man some time later. NASA letterhead expressing his extreme apologies about the tradgedy we had witnessed and thanking me for pointing out to him something he should have noticed immediately. The letter has long since been lost. That day I will never forget, nor that letter, nor the tradgedy of that day.

That's an amazing story Eustace. I'm sorry you had to experience it that way, but it's because of people like you even at 7 years old, that helps to make our world a place of knowledge and learning, even if the lesson is a hard one to learn. I was a sophomore in high school on January 28, 1986, and I didn't witness the event live, but as I was in my geometry class, our teacher wheeled in a TV and we watched all of the aftermath. I think I stayed in that class for about an hour longer than I should have and missed my next class. It was a sad day for a lot of us! And, the horror was renewed in 2003 with the loss Columbia and its crew.
Because it covers better and dries faster, I'll use flat white and then gloss over it. Works for me.
Incredible build:) Hope you will get more subscribers.

@MaxAfterburner
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil, it's a relatively cheap kit compared to most model airplanes out there.
It’s possible that the difficulty in getting an even white coat is partially down to the airbrush you’re using. I’m not 100% sure but it looks like it’s more for fine detail work than large even surfaces. Changing the nozzle and needle if possible can make a big difference. You need a wider ‘cone’ of paint and spray in long even strokes, not in patches like you do now. Usually with will require 2-3 thin coats to get an even result. Look at some videos of professionals painting cars using long smooth strokes, this is how you should paint large surfaces with an airbrush too. Same principle.

White is a major pain to spray, or paint in general for more than small areas. Its almost a different consistency to other paints, similar to metallics in that it spits flecks more. I have to thin it down considerably more than other colours for some reason. I've often wondered if a rattle can may work better, but then you risk pooling and the general lack of flexibility with a can vs an airbrush. Still, though great job as usual ^-^
@milky55way2012
6 жыл бұрын
Try applying a tan or light brown color as basecoat, then light gray, after they dry, paint your white....this will help eliminate your "Opaque" affect. It's better to build up the color to the white rather than just painting white over a darker color, etc. Keep the coats thin but sufficient to cover properly....an old "figure" technique.

Yeah, but it's funny that someone would choose 1:48 scale because of bigger parts. In fact, 1:72 scale has much less of these small parts. All those fiddly little bits are simply omitted :) Some kits don't even have a flight stick in the cabin. Any (modern) 1:48 kit has maybe twice as many parts as 1:72 scale model.
Hey nice work. What ratio and pressure do you spray your paint?

Hi Nathaniel, my usual ratio is 80% paint/ 20% thinner. For the gloss I probably had to go down to 70% paint/ 30% thinner. My old compressor has no gauge, so I do it by "feel".

For sure, i make models of old planes, ww2. and i stumbled in your f-16 build, even if i found modern planes kind of boring, all gray. I found really entertaining all the videos, audios, your personal experiences and the foto references that i though only me would find interesting. Your work made me buy an eurofighter, f104 and f4u. Keep it up!
Its well known that a small black hole opens up whenever you drop something...and it ends up in a different galaxy far, far away.

I sense a Star Wars theme here, or is it The Force?

Hi The English Channel Fishing, I don't know if you've read the book "Top Gun Days" by Dave "BIO" Baranek who became an F-14 RIO and also participated in the making of Top Gun. It's a great read about Navy training, the F-14 and working as part of the Russian "MiG" team in the film.
I think that is a MiG-28
