Building The Smallest RC LEGO Car

Ойын-сауық

In this video, I build the smallest possible RC Lego car, using only Power Functions components. To count as a remote control car, I decided that the vehicle had to be able to drive and turn independently. I started by building a simple but compact car. I then tested it by measuring the horizontal and vertical gaps it could fit through, and its turning radius. I tested its maneuverability by driving it around obstacles.
I then tried building narrower cars, with the compromise that they were longer. I took this idea to its limit, where the car was as narrow as possible while still housing the Power Functions components, but it was impractically long.
Finally, I built a car (more of a tank) that could both drive and turn with only one motor, reducing the size further, and tested it against the same obstacles.

I like the last concept, though the mechanism for turning/driving is much bigger than using one motor for each chain

This proves a very important thing:- The best solution was not compact engineering, but smart engineering.

Try making one of these little "oversized lego cozmo's" but with a driveshaft, a front and rear differential, and a 4 speed + reverse gearbox.

Cool idea. Obviously it would end up being bigger than these cars, but it would be an interesting challenge to see how small of a car I could make while fitting all of that in.

Nice, one variation could be to change the infrared receiver for a vengit Sbrickplus and include a wedo1 light/distance sensor. In this case, you could maintain all the powerfunction dc motors / servo of the proposal models and add some auto programed movement like if it is going to jump to a wall auto adjusts direction. Also as you only are using two or one pwm port, you could also add the tilt wedo 1 sensor to adjust motor velocity on ramps.

That's a great suggestion! If I ever make a part 2, I'll definitely try out some of those third-party components.

Did you know lego made a new, even smaller motor? the small angular motor from the 45345: SPIKE Essential Set. Only 5 studs long and 3x3, although it has a 3x3x1 disc like hub on the side, which is the part that rotates. I own a few of the medium and large kind and theres also an axle receptacle on the opposide of the hub, meaning you can put wheels directly on it and save tons of space. It's the newer tech tho, but Lego also has a compact battery box which doubles as a receiver for that tech.

Would it be possible to make a smaller car by flipping the power function blocks vertically and/or stacking them on top each other or above the wheels? Your builds in this video all have the frame go an extra stud outside the battery's edge to hold it together, but putting that underneath could theoretically take 2 more off while also making the car shorter from front to back.

Nice idea! I tried to make sure the cars weren't too tall either, but maybe the space it would save on the sides would've been worth it.

Thanks for the comment, but by doing that you're just switching round the dimensions, but not decreasing the volume. I made sure to use obstacles that test the cars in each dimension to show that the cars need to be as small as possible in every dimension. It would've also made it a lot less stable when driving at high speeds.
