Building the GX200 motorized drift trike (with time lapse)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Some of the photo diary making our GX200 powered Drift trike. See the test here! • Motorized Drift trike ...
She started life as a crappy bmx and a pile of steel box section.
Rear axle bought complete as a go kart axle, Tyres are full width Kart rear slicks on 210mm rims, Seat is a steel tractor pan seat, the GX200 copy was degovorned and the throttle linkage modified as per many other youtube guides. Sleeves are 200mm MDPE supplied by Drift trikes UK, great guys and gave lots of helpful tips.
Keep watching for the test footage!!!
All recorded on Iphone 5s and SJ4000

I can highly recommend using front kart tyres on rear rims after yesterday's testing. Rear tyres on rear rims do not take sleeves easily & 4.5" stretched by popping with starter fluid & fire was a job worth doing. Now sleeves slip right on & hold with 35psi.

Thanks that means a lot! This was mine & my brother in laws first time welding too. We spent £60 on a beat up gas MIG using disposable co2 canisters & soon got the hang of it. 0.6mm wire was significantly easier and neater than the 0.8mm stuff it came with. Get yourself an auto darkening mask though it's worth every penny & it's clear enough to do your grinding & paint prep with too. Good luck!

Sorry for late replies, no laptop at the moment and can't see comments properly on iPad... To answer a few common questions the engine mount is a piece of 8mm thick steel plate welded on all edges top & bottom directly to the rear beam. The chain adjustment is made using the slack between the m10 bearing bolts and the 18mm holes in the bearing blocks (whole axle slides back and fourth just enough then tightened to 50nm). All the bolts are high tensile metric with massive washers to spread the load on stress points. I'm sorry, I can't remember the name of the songs. The box sections are 40x40 3mm walled and 40x60 4mm walled mild steel. The axle is 1000mm wide. Hope this info helps & good luck with your own projects 👍🏻

It's not a kit, but it's cheaper to buy a complete used kart axle so you get your sprocket carrier & hubs included. That way you just have to buy pillow block bearings same size, adapt a blank sprocket of your choice & bang on any old set of kart wheels 😉

wow, just came across this and im glad to see yours works with this design! i had the same idea to use the rear arms of the bike welded to the rear frame and was told it will twist! well mine looks very similar to this but i didn't use bolts from bike to rear frame just welded it up, its 95% done just waiting on new throttle and cable plus a little more welding to support the seat area as i have noticed that its starting to bend a little. if im honest my second one will have a custom front end not going to use a bike frame, another thing i have noticed is throttle is no good when running on the governor arm as its all or nothing so will be hooking it up direct and next oil change removing the internals. i know this video is over a year old but do you any advice? cheers

We were concerned about the bottom bracket so we did 2 passes of weld around all the tubes and welded in a small piece of tube (shown in vid but poorly) underneath to overlap the BB she'll and downtube. The rear stays were played with steel salvaged from a plumbing expansion vessel about 1.5mm thick & welded top and bottom on all edges inc where it meets the BB and the box section where the wheel axle would have gone. I'm 14st and my brother in law is 18st and so far so good. It's all about nice fat beads of weld & if it looks ugly it soon cleans up with a grinder ;)

Only if it was a serious piece of engineered ply. I actually broke the motor mount plate clean off in my first test on a bump. Welder ran out of gas, being the last bit I chanced it & it hadn't taken. Lesson was learnt & I did a second pass of weld in several key areas & reinforced where the down tube meets the bottom bracket. I'd say stick with heavy gauge steel plate if you can.

I looked into it and due to the amount of machining involved the cheapest option was to use a standard kart axle and hub setup. The sprocket was drilled and fastened to the back side of the brake disc carrier I already had and centred by spray painting a template onto the old disc and using it as a drill guide on the blank sprocket 👍🏻

Around £350, £155 of which was on a new engine & centrifugal clutch to match our sprocket. The wheels, bearings and axle with carriers & hubs make up about £100, the Bmx and steel were scrap from our local recycling centre bought for a few beer tokens & the seat, bolts, cables & thumb throttle make up the rest (all from eBay). Finally I had to buy 10" mdpe tube at a whopping £40 but if you can source this from a builder it's better bought in lengths.

+Dylan Walker about a week to source major parts after making a list & drawing ideas for how to attach a bmx frame to a rectangular subframe. Total build around 2months of Sunday's & we then added some additional welds after we fractured the engine mount on a pothole (turns out when you run out of co2 on a mig you really can't chance those last 2 welds without lol)

I think around 25mph with the current gearing which is more than enough for lots of torque and sideways action!

The original concept actually came from a hybrid after reading www.instructables.com/id/Motorized-Drift-Trike/ and seeing kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmGZpZSOfpvXhMo.html. Colin furze did indeed also build a geared trike some time after mine but feel free to screenshot my original sketches for your own reference. I wanted to make a removable subframe mainly for transport & storage rather than come straight off the front frame which is why I've used such excessively thick material for the rear stay block & reinforced it. Weighs a flipping ton mind. The axle/kart setup is purely for convenience as it costs as much to buy a used assembly as it does to make one up unless you've got a lathe ;o)
