    Killin' it dude! One quick thought/tip: When 'bending' your frame rails you should cut half the angle on either side of your vertical line, instead of cutting it all out from one side. In case that wasn't explained well, an example: if you need to remove a 30º piece, mark the bend location with a vertical line (just like the line you marked perpendicular to the rail already) then mark 15º on each side of that and use those for your cuts. This way you won't have a big gap where the cuts meet up after bending - same number of cuts but a much cleaner joint without a big gap to fill. 👍

    I think it would be even easier to just go ahead and cut it in 2 pieces and weld all 4 sides. Especially since he has that chop saw. He’s having to spend a lot of time making that pie cut and bending the tube.

    When angling a rectangular tube, split the angle in half. Then you won´t get one side of the cut longer than the other. Now you’re making one cut 90deg and the other 70. Make both 80deg, it will make welding a lot easier and a nicer look when finished.

    He should also do that when he attaches the inboard rails (engine, rear end)to the outboard rails (under the doors) The finished structure will also be stronger, not just nicer looking. Notches like on the inside of the bends he's made are where stress cracks can form. I doubt he'll have issues over the axles, but where the frame widens, engine torque will be twisting hard.

    It's probably too late to say this now, but when you do an angle bend on the rail, you should cut equal distances each side of the 90 degree mark and that way, when you bend the rail, the edges meet neatly and you don't have that gap that you keep getting by cutting only one side of the 90 degree mark.

    if you split the angle difference when cutting out the "pie wedge" instead of doing a 90 degree cut on one of the cuts, you won't get the difference of the frame rail with the gap.

  • @dalejessop5466

    @dalejessop5466

    Probably easier to make the straight cut with the circular saw, then cut the angle with the grinder. Another reason to get a good band saw.

  • @DZCamaro-kz2vd

    @DZCamaro-kz2vd

    4 жыл бұрын

    the distance of the angle cuts have to be same to get it to "box" correctly, like when you put two 90 degree cuts together in a corner...they match up. When you cut the one 90 degrees and the second cut at an odd and different degree angle, that is what is causing the gap after you bend the rail. Lets say you are cutting a 12 degree wedge out of the rail, get the center 90'd and then cut 6 degrees out of each side of the 90. Kind of hard for me to explain, but I hope you know what i mean. I have to give you an "A" for effort on this HUGE PROJECT!

    Really enjoy to see your work. I've been doing the same thing you have for years. I'm into mechanical engineering. As others have stated: when you take an angle in any direction (bending or cutting then welding), it is best to split the angle taken in half among the parts intersecting. For example, the frame rail is being angled down at 40 degrees. The parts should be cut at 20 degrees, and when brought together they make the 40 degree angle that was originally desired. Doing this helps reduce the stress load, balances out the opposing forces. Also since this is a hand made frame, you will want to add stress dispersion plates on the frame where cuts were made. These are to spread the load throughout the frame at the connecting parts. If you don't do this, the frame will most likely crack at the weld under the stress of the load it receives.

    Vtuned. You're killing me!!! When you cut and bend the tubes instead of cutting at 90 degrees and then your angle.....mark 90 degrees and cut half the angle from each side of the line. Then you'll get a perfect fold an they'll meet perfectly.

    That saw is exactly the reason why you don't play around with power tools. That thing cuts the steel like butter, imagine what it would do to your hand. Anyway, on an unrelated note, this is a great series. I love watching you guys take apart and then completely rebuild a car all on your own. It's cool to see a sort of "homegrown" approach to car building, which I imagine is a lot like how car companies like Ford got started, taking the parts off other cars and then building around them to create your own vision.

    I like how your building everything yourself. If I had to fault you on something it would be the way the angle cuts don't match up on the inside corners. If you make both cuts the same length these corners will align perfectly. What you're doing is using one square cut and one angle cut but what you should be doing is making both side the same (half of the total angle needed). So if the total angle needs to be 35 degrees you should cut both sides 17.5 degrees.

  • @Pythonagrator

    When putting the bends in those frame rails it would have been better to mark the centre of the bend and cutting half the angle either side of the centre, that way both the cut edges line up correctly when you bend the rail. Makes it stronger and easier to weld.

Tip on knotching the frame rails for bending, shift the triangle/angle so that you're cut is an acute triangle instead of a right triangle. That way when you bend the tube everything will line up without holes on the joint and the bend will stay the same as long as you keep the same angle. Just a tip for future cuts. I was going to make that suggestion to put the frame against the rocker, like they do in factory automobiles. The only time you can get away with the current design is with vehicles that have high ground clearances and the cab over the frame rail. Because the car is very low to the ground, you can't get away with this type of design. BTW, that new dry cut saw is amazing! Love to see it help in speeding up the cuts and ultimately the build! It's coming along so nicely! Great music selection.

    One alternative for those frame rail seams: Use a backing strip inside the tube, and make proper full penetration welds with multiple beads/ passes to fill the gap.

    Looking good man, keep it up! I do think you need to reinforce that thing every which way you can because there's gonna be a lot of forces going into that frame when you put the pedal down! 😄 You need to make sure it can bend and flex a bit too otherwise it'll find a weak spot and crack eventually, and those welds will most likely not be your weak-spots! 🤔I had that problem with a home-made offroad vehicle I built back in 2002! 😄I know you won't be going offroad with it (hopefully) but still, you can't be too careful because, in the end, it's your own life (and others) that's at risk! 😛

    Hi Vtuned. Make sure you get a tube bender that is air ove hydralic, So you can use a compressor to actuate the bender. It will make the work go way faster and more acurately. Make yourself a cheater bend so you can calculate how much extra material you need for each angle of bend. If you look it up on youtube you will see what I mean. Then you can use trig to calculate how long a piece of material you need, and you wont waste any chromemoly tubing. you can download a PDF to show you how to make proper roll cages that must meet requirements to be allowed to run down the quarter mile. If you look up PFI speed there is an excellent explanation of what I am talking about. Thanks for another great Video Don't rust to get to a finish, because this series is doing really well. I would rather have more detail that a fast conclusion.

    When you miter a joint in the rectangular tube, take the angle and divide it in half and make the smaller cuts on both side of the miter instead of only one side. That way both sides of the cut come out with the same dimension and you dont have a gap a the bottom.

  • @RedRiverRedNeck309
    @RedRiverRedNeck3094 жыл бұрын

    If you can run across a compound miter saw you can buy the steel metal cutting blade for it and it will let you then cut all your angles with it and not have to use your hand held cut off wheel. Food for thought...it sure makes cutting so much easier. Oh and if it's a sliding compound miter saw that's a bonus lol.

    Frame is looking great! I don't think you'll need fish plates and a whole lot of cross members but like that you're over building it so it can take massive power. You may consider buying a cheap laser level. I noticed you aren't measuring height off the frame machine, but are keeping everything level. With a laser level you could check each corner of the frame and at some key points to make sure the whole thing is level to itself. Keep it up, we are loving the build!

    How come you aren’t splitting the angles so both sides meet together vs one 90° and the other angle you need them that’s causing the open section where the angle cut is longer?

    If you want the ends to meet up when doing pie cuts simply shift the bottom of the triangle over so that it is equal distance from the center line of the bend.

    You are not cutting your miters correctly. You need to split the total angle between the 2 cuts so that it comes together evenly.

    This is awesome. Can’t wait to do the same with an F100 once I get a garage in a yeah or two. Also, this has maybe already been said, but I’d recommend making the front subframe bolt-on rather than welded for any future services. May be wrong but I feel like life would suck way less just having to unbolt it with it in the car (oil pan gasket replacement or anything else).

    Next time you cut tubing to "bend" it, find the bend angle and divide by half. Then cut that on BOTH ends. Your bends don't match when finished now. Basically both sides need the same angle cut out... not just 1

    instead of cutting one straight line and one at an angle, you could cut both on half the angle that you want for the bends in the rails and it will give you mated surfaces to weld together rather than one side being much longer than the other

    As I'm sure you noticed, when you cut the wedge out of the frame and squeeze it together you are having it so it doesn't come together even on both sides. If you require a 30 degree final angle then the idea is to mark your line 15 degrees for each line. That way when it's squeezed together you get both sides squeeze together evenly. Similarly the trim around a household door has 90 deg. angles, therefore when you cut 2 pieces of trim at 45 deg. and put them together the final angle is 90 deg. I realize a car frame is more challenging, so I would use 2x6 lumber from Home Depot to mock it up first. Just a suggestion!

    If you would split your triangle cut(1/2 of the triangle on each side of 90) you would have even seams and the frame would look nicer and be stronger.
