@Le-champ and both other questions above. First, you can make modifications to this project to avoid these hindrances - if you can build this prototype, you can design it better. Water certainly would leak trough the door in heavy rain or snowmelt, if just a little. So if you have a simular or double-sided adhesive tape, you can stick an adequate piece of plastic panels (like from the thin enclosure walls, thin insulation, water barriers, light roofing tiles of any material) on top of the door, wider than it, in a fashion that water runs over the top and down the side away from the seams. And then you can adjust the shape of the end panels to make it taller, add benches, joined tables inside our outside. If you want a serious fire burning inside, i'd rather go for indian teepee construction. Also a ventilation which lets the fumes out, but keeps the rain and snow out is probably necessary for longer stays. Besides, if your shelter catches fire from hot coals or similar while you're dosed off, i wouldn't want to experience that, period. Have a little imagination and experiment, once you've decided to build one - it's not an airplane model.)))

P.S. Just noticed it's one person asking. I've no experience with bears, as in my country you can count on your fingers those who accidentally entered our forests from Russia or Belarus, unlikely lately. If you have them plenty where you set it up, burning fire and smoke is your best friend, folliwed by bear csa flacons and probably some strong razorwire wrapped around tge shelter, but i'd rather not risk it. Slowly chomped down by bear is one if the worst deaths imaginable. Good luck, hope you don't need it.

A very clever homeless man built himself a small sand bag shelter in a steep bank.Steep enough so that No one physically could walk down it safely. I assume he imagined it wasn't in anyone's way he really wasn't intruding he minded his own business. He lived the way for a few years before anyone noticed. When the people living close noticed it, they immediately called authorities and destroyed his home.I was so disgusted.He was a veteran. Living a bit of a crazy life and should have been left alone.

Nice one, gonna watch this next, you done a great thing here, I been homeless, lived in tents on the south downs in the UK, lived on the road for many years and now live 75% offgrid on my boat, will be 100% again once i sorted some medical stuff out, but bloody well done, you done good, even if it did take a bit longer than 5 minutes lol Oh and subbed ya channel too.

Whether an apprecitive person finds this or it gets trashed, what a kind thing for you to do. It's never wasted time when guided by a good heart.

Hey, what were the dementions on the panels and how did you attach them? I'm thinking of building one for my property for myself while doing my house

THIS IS A GREAT IDEA!!!! I work with homeless in my area. These could go on an empty city lot with a port a potty. I would change a few things THIS IS A GREAT START!!! I wonder how many old garage panels are just sitting around junking up the earth. The amount of resources the city would need could be minimal... I know PLENTY of homeless that take care of the things they DO HAVE... ESPECIALLY for the people who own pets and can't go to a shelter.. This would be a safe place for man & pup...❤❤❤

If they provide homeless free space, they will most likely sue for some frivolous reason and potentially get a free ride for life. Its all about liability.

"E" for effort!! I remember Elvis the guy from Los Angeles that built tiny homes from scrap lumber from construction sites on industrial rollers. He included smoke detectors, fire extinguishers LED lighting and locks on the door. The City Attorney issued a cease and desist order and fined him. That was 10 years ago. It didn't fly then and recently another homeless person built one similar, it was destroyed by the city in one of the ENCAMPMENT CLEAN UPS. THE "tin can tiny home villages are APPROVED at the cost of $35.000.00 each. MAKES NO Sense TO ME. Kevin your recycling and building ability keeps me watching you. Your a great human❤

I suspect that local politicians cave to pressure from the source of their property tax revenue when they complain that temporary housing is affecting the property values. There are plenty of vagrancy laws that can be used to get law enforcement to supervise their removal. I suppose mobile "homes" like cars could let you move when it's an issue, but forming a convoy of sorts for mutual support might also attract attention. Considering how beloved the Roma are in Europe I have my doubts about the level of hospitality communities may extend to such groups lingering in new neighborhoods. Not that my opinion matters for anything, but I wouldn't mind seeing something like a cross between hostels and campgrounds in the down town urban cores. Something to provide subsidized utilities, and room for people to camps. By utilities I mean well maintained things like toilets, showers, clean drinking water, electricity to charge their phones, and even wifi access. Having those services in a centralized area would also make a good spot for a food bank and soup kitchen. By taking the edge off the misery of someone down on their luck can open opportunities for them to reengage. There are plenty of working homeless, this sort of thing could be a lifeline that lets them invest in other areas of their lives. Perhaps more importantly it might bridge some of the economic gap growing in the cities. When people have nothing to lose that can include hope. Many turn to drugs to numb themselves. But given sufficient pressures it can cause people to be angry and active rather than shut down. This can be dangerous if that someone is so unwell that they become agitated an violent; or perhaps even more dangerous those who maintain their faculties under the duress of poverty could loose their scruples when it comes to robing those with plenty. I have no idea what stats might reflect either outcome, but I expect it to be low and vary from place to place. Either case if it happens is bad for society as a whole. Something like this could also signal that the city cares about all it's residents, and isn't more concerned with themselves not landing on the wrong side of the growing gap in the wealth divide and inflation. But I suspect competing interests have more pull.

I agree. I do however feel compelled to suggest that next time you shorten the inside by a foot, and put the door on the end creating an over hang, helping to keep the inside dry when it rains.

In order to know that your hard work went to good use is to actually go out and get a homeless person to give it to so that they can take care of it and put 4small wheels and a wagon puller on the bottom so they can take it wherever they go. This is awesome ❤

If you take the "puller" off a wagon, why not take the wheels and acles off too?? The wagon wheels (Back in the day) used to haul a couple of hundred pounds of stuff.. The old Little Red Wagons.. I don't know if they're made of the same quality these days or not.

Are there many homeless women in Canada? There are here where I live. I am so very sad for them all. I hope that their higher power will protect them in their time of need. You are a wonderful person, Kevin. This is a wonderful idea to help give them some shelter.

Maybe a simple window and some ventilation. I don't think your average homeless person is going to have solar panels and a diesel heater on them. Pretty good basic design Kevin. Keep up the good work. Mike from Maine

I understood that the diesel heater was to be screwed down. The 'homeless' person often has an income but not one that stretches to apartment rental, let alone home purchase at the prices Kevin noted. One need only buy some fuel. However, these shelters belong in communities that can provide common toilets and showers and general site security.

Hi Kevin! This is a Great idea, and of course you can through with the perfect reuse materials, and build! I think it may be a little bulky to pull around, but would be great if it stayed in one place. I think, if I were staying there, I would definitely want windows on a couple of the walls, so you could see who, or what was coming around, and agree with you about needing an inside latch, and maybe a handle... also, maybe a lock on the outside? A closable vent for air flow might be good... Personally, I wouldn't leave the battery, and the heater there... I think it will just get stolen, and hocked for a little extra cash for other necessities. I really think the cabin could be heated with just a candle heater... I used a couple of different versions earlier in the year to heat my living room, when my propane ran out. They worked really well... liquid parrafin candles (or a can of vegetable shortening with a wick) work better, and last longer than wax candles... I think it's great that there's a solar panel, maybe it could be paired with a smaller battery charger to charge their phone, or a USB charged light, and a way to make the panel easily removable, to lock inside, or carry with them... That's all I got, hope some of these ideas help!

Well, I think his idea was to showcase a design, so show what could be given to a homeless person Canadian winters are cold, so a design without something to heat the structure might not be safe

Whilst I applaud your laudable efforts, and think that your heart is absolutely in the right place, the sceptic in me can't help but think that within a week everything will have been taken from inside, and the shell will either be trashed or find itself floating down the river. I hope that I'm wrong, but society rarely fails to disappoint.

I've provided about 300 shelters for the unhoused community in my area of western canada over the past 3 years. The only ones that have been damaged were destroyed by police and other violent hate groups, more than 100 are still in use

I have worked with the homeless for many years, and what I have found that within the community, they are the most helpful to each other. Outsiders fair game, but within the homeless community, they share with each other and keep each other as safe as possible. If someone in the community breaks their unwritten rules, they police their own. It is awesome to witness. ❤

I agree with you SWATStrachan. Homeless people don't paint graffiti. Kids will find this and use it as a party place and ruin it. An absolute A for effort on Kevin's part. It's more of a solution than governments are initiating.

Y'all gotta remember that he's in a fairly rural area in Canada, and not in the US, I'd agree wholeheartedly with you if this was in an urban area in the US, but I think it could fare better in Canada... But that might just be wishful thinking/hopeful thinking

Absolutely brilliant Kevin 🙏 I see that people have commented about the stuff being taken or sold. But you have to take a leap of faith in people. I am certain that people in real need would find this and be grateful. And to some extent add to the features within it and around it. It's a sad, grim reality that worldwide homelessness affects us all in some way. No matter where we are in the world. You are only ever one pay check away from being homeless or suffering some form of hardship. If this build helps just one individual it has done it's job well.

As someone currently living under a tarp this is a great idea. Im not sure any municipalities would care to see these in the ravines, parks, ect.

I cannot thank you enough Kevin for giving somebody the opportunity for some shelter. I just purchased that heater about three months ago and it’s a game changer. It really brings off a lot of heat and it warms up the garage really great. My son-in-law liked it so well that he ordered two of them. He said the heaters were great for him also . As always enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for taking us along.❤️

Love that shelter! I'd put the door on the end, not in the the middle. Coming or going with weather coming down, less weather would get in. Also, heavy snow or ice could make getting out an issue. That was my first thought too. The weight of that hinge up door may not be doable for some homeless people. I would hate to see jammed fingers or head impacts. By putting the door on the end you would maximise the water tightness of the roof and sides. It would also make cleaning out the structure easier, if there was a regular door at the end, rather than a door with a high threshold. It would also make it easier for ambulance officers to access a person that was incapacitated. Many homeless people have a dog for personal security and having to lift the dog in and out might be a bit of a detractor. In heavy snow falls an inward swinging vertical door at the end would be safer at the expense of impinging on some of the interior space. That swing up hatch could be difficult/impossible to lift from the inside with a heavy snow load on top of it. I did like the use of material. Insulation, strength and a durable surface all in the one cheap material.

Good idea basically you have to seal the cuts on the roof. It will leak need some kind of flashing on that door to keep the water out otherwise very nice.😊

With having to climb into it, they won't be able to have anything on that part of the floor. I'm sure they'll be appreciative, but still, there are some who might be disabled, too.

I hope someone builds on his idea of shelter for the homeless. A place in California has a community of small homes for homeless elderly. That is helped by city officials but it was only a small area for separate small homes that had bed, table, chair and I forget what else they contained.

Bravo, Kevin! I think what you've done is great. Some homeless folks will be very appreciative. No matter how this goes, you gave someone a blessing by your intent to help. This might be a new form of Pay It Forward.

Those composite panels are a definite plus when putting together a shelter, especially if they're designed with easy knock-down/flat pack in mind. Dwellings that are lightweight, fast and easy to assemble/disassemble, are immensely appealing to me. I consider myself a temporarily rooted nomad, with a penchant for small, well designed spaces.

This is what happens when Kevin gets left Home Alone ~ "Kevin.... Where's KEVIN?!?" We forgot Kevin !" Very innovative build ~ great job bro. Hopefully things will begin to change in the great white north before too long.... God bless (and sorry for the movie reference) ~ PR

I love your heart 🤩 but I do have some suggestions. First there should be a small vent for the heater, so gases like CO² don't accumulate. Also the door seems kinda wonky, and hard to use. People are right about the stealing issues, you should put the heater and the battery in separate boxes with good locks on them. Also a battery in a closed space can emit gasses of its own and could also accumulate. Otherwise someone that uses it long-term could develop breathing issues. Put the battery and its bix outside, but you'll need to insulate the box so the battery doesn't freeze, otherwise it will blow a cell. Also there ought to be either a raised bed, or put some padding on that cold a$$ floor so there is some level of comfort, not everyone can sleep on a flat unpadded floor, (people like me). Perhaps you could install a hammock. Js Keep up the wonderful work you're doing, homelessness is a serious issue that NOBODY talks about. You never think you'll have to worry about being homeless, until it happens to you. Been there done that.

LOVED it! The only thing id suggest is putting some kind of "welcome" sign on the outside to tell people you're not invading, as well as a "safety/working/guideline" print out inside to help run everything inside safely and maybe even a "leave something behind for the next person" bin/section for things like water bottles/granloa bars/great sticks/etc. haha

Kevin you came up with an awesome idea. It not only helps the land fill but it also helps the homeless people. Loved this video but you really need away to lock the inside so if people came along you can feel safe.

It's going to take an act of selflessness on the wealthy to actually care about people who don't have basic needs. They are the ones who need to create change in the world without expecting something in return other than the fact they did a decent thing by someone else. Your heart is in the right place, and it would be great if this would help someone in need.

if you possess a single penny, you are considered "wealthy." From what i understand of the laws (specifically in the USA) there are no such designation to legally identify someone as "poor" or "wealthy" so you having a single penny and someone else having a billion dollars are subject to the same laws and considered "rich."

I am a homeless person and I think that you are doing a good thing for the homeless people in your area and anything you can help them with is a good thing for them cause I have been trying to get some help with a place to stay cause I have just lost everything I had and I am in a tent with two dogs and a wife and no one is willing to help me out with a place to stay or some where to go

I was homeless and living in a tent for nearly three years. Nothing is as easy as people make it out to be. Check with church ministries- some will allow you to use their address for mail- that's a big help. I had a used laptop (saved up for it) and did online work at the local library to earn food for me and my cat. I had friends who let me use their address so I could find a job. Don't rely on other people and agencies- they're overwhelmed. You have to help you. You're in my prayers.

@bennyharper - wish you were in my area bro because a number of us could help out with time and energy and give you something more solid then a tent. Bigger, warmer, dryer and more healthy. I used to do festival set up team back in the day. And we needed quick erection take down structures that were enjoyable. We tried teepees, yurts, big army tents with big frames, then we hit it. DOMES. Cheap, Light, strong, multi layer, plenty light, space , ventilation, heating, and more... First we tried the big pentagons, then we discovered more workable hexagons. They were smaller components easier to join , less expertise. We made them from rubbish. 😜

Some elderly or people with physical difficulties would have a hard time with that door. Thank you for helping others.

😢 It's such a sad situation everywhere in the world. Housing shortage, impossible costs to buy or rent and tent cities have been around in one form or another since the 90's here in Australia. We have donations of a swag/tent for the homeless, but even that falls foul of the authorities to use. God bless 🙏 your efforts Kevin, share this idea with the world governments to help the homeless. The authorities are basically NIMBY's(Not In My Back Yards) here in Australia not really helping unless it gives them something, even the 'solution' of adding accessible dwelling units (granny flats) to places that already have an established dwelling is a drop in the ocean compared to what needs to be done.

If you had watched this channel for any time you would have been aware of Kevin's legendary 'frugality' and would not have given away the new boots, diesel heater and the like if his heart was not in it. I just commented on your brother's video yesterday. About how the skills he teaches us are becoming more and more useful do to the housing crisis.

Kevin, what a great build you've created! I was homeless in the U.S. on two different occasions, clean and sober the whole time. I've been clean and sober 39 years, folks. It's good to see the number of positive responses you're having from people who are compassionate and caring. These are challenging times for so many of us here. Many of us are only one paycheck away from homelessness- one accident away, one illness... one hurricane, one earthquake, one fire. There is not enough affordable housing out there (as you pointed out, Kevin) In the U.S., corporations and the 1% are working hard to prevent and/or bust unions which are fighting to enable hardworking people to obtain decent wages. Society should provide solutions for people, or at the least, not hold them down, criminalize them, steal their possessions or worse. In the U.S., there's a bill just passed in Kentucky which severely impacts homeless people and, in fact, threatens their lives. This is not good, people!! I admire Canada, and Canadians. I also admire the country of Norway. I've been living here (in Norway) since 1999, when I moved to be with my Norwegian husband. We've had a roof over our heads since 1999, but we haven't forgotten how it feels to be homeless and to have no resources and no place to go. Well, enough said- I just wanted to congratulate you, Kevin, on your creativity, kindness, and hard work. Ha det bra! (have it good, in Norwegian) :-)

this is cherie....this is great and cool ..i would be scared tho as many cruel people out there that would be mean to hopeless i m afraid they would lock them inside and there is no escape window. to open or break to get out. but other than that worry i would like that if i were homeless which i have been before twice. i know u couldnt leave the heater in one cause of thieves and pawners. but even just the house itself like u said in winter keep cold air and weather off ya and if u a few people in there even 4 and recline back on the wall it would fit 4 the body heats i think would keep everyone warm in there even without heat but a small hole to keep fresh oxygen flow in even tho it has air cracks . cause as many homeless as there is they may try to get 6 of themselves in there to get out of weather so would definately need the oxygen. what a super idea and using scrape that is disregarded yet insolated. great idea

Top comment brian 👍 you are right about the cruelty of a few psychos. In my area one harmless homeless guy lost an eye. It was unprovoked. But he's fixed up now, his Mrs got a place and he's off the street. I've seen others get attacked by mindless haters. That's why I do what I can and still feel it isn't enough. Something massive has to be done. A complete change of mindset in the general population. We don't need banks, finance institutions etc. ruling us. That's why I love the movie fight club. Fighting back against this f'd up system and winning 😄

I really like this, would be thoughtful to develop this design into a semi-permanent shelter for those of us that have access to quantities and recyclers. e.g. elevated bed with storage space under. Integrated solar power exhaust fan - solar panel with battery for LED strip light. Another thoughtful addition would be a basic roof water catchment and storage system, for example an adult can survive on 500L per year - cooking and drinking only. Adding a water storage tank would be a relief for someone needing the basics and is essential for survival.

Plastic tubes, bottles with sand and charcoal for filtering rain water. Donated Hydrogen peroxide for sterilising ,freshing up the living space and adding oxygen. Keep the ideas coming, it gets the creative juices flowing

Small portable shelters which can be locked are such a help to the homeless population.

you may want to consider a few small windows and ventilation for the second version of the shed - the frame seems solid, and I can see there are some small gaps between the walls and the roof, but in the warmer months condensation and dampness might be an issue. also, it's just nice to be able to see around you, and control airflow where you're sleeping. great idea, and a good use of material that would otherwise go to waste!

I think the main benefit of this design is to survive the winter, which is the harshest season to survive in Canada maybe it isn't the best design for summer, and maybe a couple modifications could improve it for the summer, but even if not, maybe hypothetically in the summer, it could be used for storage (like storing cans of food) or other food (which keeps squirrels and raccoons from getting it) maybe it's more ideal to use a regular tent for the peak summer

Great video, when you think out of the box, you soon understand that there are infinite off grid opportunities in Canada. We need to change the narrative of homelessness to that of adventurous.

Your idea is good! Adding the wheels to it to make it more all terrain is a great idea. I'm working with my city to try to come up with a solution to our homelessness boom. In the States the local and state governments are destroying the tiny portable homes that people are making for the homeless, unless you go through them and get proper permits for building them. Another problem is we don't have suitable places to park them. It's a big problem, but I know that we can solve it.

This may be my absolute favorite project that you've done, and that really is saying a lot! I love most of your projects, and the mini camper/rv that you did was honestly probably my previous favorite. But I really do love this and the sentiment behind it, and I hope this video goes mega-viral. Maybe then more people, who are able to, will want to do similar things, we have to get back to helping each other when we can and things like this are a great way to help our communities! Something else that comes up from the creek besides a lovely view - thoroughly chilled air. The water acts basically like one giant swamp cooler. I'd maybe face the entry away from the water, just saying. Super neat unit. Could easily save a life on a freezing night. The State could be doing this if they cared about the people...

I hope that your effort to aid the homeless helps ,my rent goes up food cost have not gone down and Congress only kick the can every three months then they avoid a government shut down and if it does shut down we would be screwed disability isnt a living. We do have shelters but there is a fringe that wont stay in a shelter for their own reasons.

Nice place. I'd love in there. I would him up that tiny home with a keypad lock portable battery charging back solar panel. When i leave i would put everything in and hit keypad. I would even have a personal security cam hidden, a few of them. Now, those boots look nice and I've never heard of them, however, L.L. Bean are my favorite to go to here in the states. That's a very kind thing you've done and blessings coming to you. Your heart is careful of the homeless and we need more people here in this country and ask over the world to come together and learn to live with little and lots come in the kingdom that awaits the children of goodness.

I live on a boat in the UK and I have given the keys to my yard, i have had it 24 years now to someone who needed somewhere to park up and get off the road for a break, best thing I done for someone in ages, he is now sorting through all my crap and clearing stuff I not touched, let alone seen in 20 years. Helping people can mean helping yourself at the same time.

I'd be interested if you leave the whole kit and caboodle how long it all lasts. I hope you visit once a day and record the erosion of the unit and its accessories. A good, kind and generous idea but I don't think it will be long before it's vandalised and all the stuff stolen. 😢 👍

We need these all over the place, because our filthy gvts are deliberately making ppl homeless according to their satanystUN plans. Good job, Kevin. The heater could be outside with the air tubing flowing the air from inside through it and back inside. That is the safest option and very efficient.

My home town was in the news today about the huge homeless controversy, Burien, Wa. You're on the right track. The corp my daughter works for sends them occasionally to volunteer in the building of tiny homes for the homeless. She took her daughters last time and they helped to paint.None of us need tons of square feet in a huge home to be comfortable ( as you are well aware).I don't know the answer, but caring is the first step to helping. i don't know about Canada, but here in america if our politicians followed the laws on the books and the constitution we wouldn't have any of these types of problems. But yes, Canada needs a "reset" to adopt a "better" form of what makes America so amazing. A constitutional capitalist republic. With a similar bill of rights.

💙🇺🇲 Need a whisk broom and dust pan along with a small cook set to boil water from the creek. Also, some tea bags, sugar packets, a spork, and a couple of plastic mugs would be welcoming to someone freezing out there. And what the hell, you might as well throw in some pop tarts too, as they will last forever, and they don't need heating to eat. 😁 💕

@@coocookachoo2806 - you're right so a bit of copper tube into a simple still could make a difference. That's where the more fortunate could help out. It's not always money. Just some simple stuff that ends up in the bin could make a difference to a home less guy.

Quite an adventure. I enjoyed the build process. Reading comments that I agree: door on end, a window, build several with a community in mind for safety. Would not leave solar, battery, and heater. This should be presented to agencies that approve homeless housing.

How much voltage did that drain on the battery? I’m surprised it lasted a night…. Freedom units! Love it!

Once the heater is on it just uses a really low voltage to run the fan. The heater still said 12v on the battery at the end of the night.

This is a great idea to help those less fortunate!! Can't wait for a follow-up video.

As a homeless person I love seeing stuff like this. I want to work with someone to build a mobile bike camper.

Good sentiment, but I can just see it being taken away to the dump by the authorities.
