FINALLY happy to share the second update to the new House/Studio build! This is a tour of the existing place before we actually begin construction. The fun part starts now as we begin to pick the materials, style and overall look of how everything will come together. I created this as a great memory for the future since this is my parents house and a house that I grew up in. Happy to hear all your guys feedback, suggestions, ideas and feel free to ask any questions as we move through this process!

I work for a construction company where we build custom luxury homes and I cannot recommend strongly enough raising the ceiling height. The cost up front is always challenging to swallow, but the return on investment is beyond worth it!
Man this house is going to be absolutely insane.

Def leaning towards that
Dude, this is so cool that you're able to do this! So nostalgic!
I live in an equally expensive Canadian city and it is SO worth it to underpin the basement! People say 'they'll do it later' but after renos are done, you won't want to do anymore renos for YEARS! In a way, it will be cheaper and faster to do it now, and it will add so much value. Great job on this and all your videos!
this reminds me so much of our house!! cant wait to see the new build

Super cool Karl! I will use your videos to inspire me for my next home!
Even though this was a nostalgic trip through your childhood, I couldn’t help but feel like it was also mine 😂 the new designs are freaking incredible. I can’t wait to see the final result.
I also live in toronto, build homes and am a big car guy, if your pouring new slab to turn your car port to a proper garage, get plumbing put in the garage (drain) so you can wash the car in there/ winter slush will melt and go down the drain!
Yes it will be well worth spending to get the ceiling height. We live in my childhood home (80s build) and did a reno recently. It was well worth getting the work done, and we have a young family so it was an experience too lol (newborn during no kitchen). since you will be living in it for some time... no regrets and as you said once it's done it will be harder to get it done after
Been looking forward to this one! 👀
It’s gonna be wicked!
Congratulations bro
Love these Karl, excited your documenting the entire thing! Going to be so good to look back and see how it all came about :)

Yessss on the basement, golf sim would be sick.
I would underpin. We recently reno'd our Toronto Semi and I regret not underpinning. The benefits go beyond the additional height. You'll also get a new main drain and your slab will also be brand new and levelled making the flooring that much better.
Biggest recommendation would be the same company for all faucets, the finish is always slightly different from various companies

That's awesome!
@KarlConrad Amazing video, so happy you guys! Can wait to see everything come to life. I will be waiting for the update/progess videos. Also, are you guys doing a full custom cabinetry throughout the house? If so, who are you guys going with?
if you're building a gym in the basement and wanna overhead press or anything, the extra 2 feet might be handy
Hi Karl. JT form the Philippines. Watching this video still reminds me how Filipinos grew up with their parents. Salamat Kapatid.
Amazing work!! My brother and I just finished building a house in Vancouver, similar square footage. One thing that we didn’t think of was storage space. Having a linen closet upstairs and some of the newer places not have laundry on the top floor as oppose to the bottom. Excited to see the type of tech you put in. One super neat idea is putting wireless charge capability under your counter tops so when you put your phone down it’ll start charging automatically.

Oh How I wish I was you bro. God Bless You and your Family. BTW Yes to the basement thing. It'll be worth it
I recommend doing lifetime hardwood flooring we spent around $10,000 doing our house and that and it’s been fabulous and for windows you do want to do double paned windows it will save you tons of money on heating and cooling costs
Amazing😍😍
Welcome
This might be a little late but figured I would give my opinion. I am a residential real estate appraiser and absolutely would add the extra 2ft to the basement. That is a huge selling point for the future and is also something I would definitely take into account if I was appraising your house. The extra ceiling height adds value for sure. But keep in mind, cost does not always equal value.
Yes! Underpin it
Definitely go with the higher ceiling. You will add more value to your home!
Yes get the extra height in the basement. That’s easy ROI right there. Wasted ROI if you don’t
@KarlConrad
2 жыл бұрын
Definitely thinking the same thing
I would definitely spend the $40K to underpin the basement. If you don’t, you will eventually regret it. I’m 5’1” and I’d still want the higher ceilings. For someone your height it’s a no brainer.
I would underpin the basement for sure. A lot of people don’t buy houses because of the ceiling being too low
Your smiling face make me feel good
Yes to the extra ceiling height
You should go with polished concrete for the floor.
Yes you should underpin the basement.

Underpin. Chuck that tag price, you'll never have to worry about it again. And you could do underfloor heating.
I’m sure you already considered this but why are you going with engineered hardwood instead of Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring? Main difference being that vinyl tends to hold up better when you have a dog. You may want to look into it if you don’t want to have your nice engineered damaged! Also - you may want to look into porcelain for your counter top material. It’s tends to be more heat resistant than quartz (assuming you are going with quartz) and requires less maintenance especially if the counters are in a sun filled room.
Absolutely insane...
lol...i was trying to figure where in toronto has a lot that size...im excited to see how this goes...toronto is insane for property

It’s a unique lot for sure
You won’t regret the extra ceiling height. Trust me. Not only does it add to the selling value, as you stated, but it’s gonna be a major quality of life improvement.
Dude - underpin it 100%. If you're going to live there for as long as it sounds, you'll thank yourself that you did and $40K will be a drop in the bucket after all those years once ROI kicks in.
Definitely excavate the basement and make it higher ceiling

@@KarlConrad not sure what regulation for fire pits in yards are but personally I would salvage the stones from old fireplace and somehow find a way to utilize them in the yard. Maybe build a fire pit as homage to the old fireplace.
congratulations on the pregnancy
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Paving over a beautiful mid-century modern home. I’d have restored and preserved the original design, which actually has value.
Do the basement
Maybe a little too personal but I'd love to know the costs associated with everything as I'm also interested in building a house in the GTA😀

wow .
defos underpin the basement. you won't regret it
I hope that the house does have cat6 network cable , so in the future every room does have internet.
How do you do floor to ceiling windows in Toronto? I'm in Melbourne with the same and it's 12c and I'm freezing.
Buy once, cry once. Do it right the first time if possible and upgrade the basement area.

Just do it. ✔️
If the value of the house is over a million dollars, & raising the hight of the lower floor is $40K, then it's a no brainer. That's 4%, or less of the homes value. The question isn't should you do it or not; it's if you have access to another $40K or not. If you can afford it, then you know what the answer is. It will be better for you, & better when you go to sell. The math speaks for itself.
It's been more than 2/3 years, haven't get any shorts of vlog Karl. Do it once again na ! Love from India brother 🙃

Spend the 40k... 100% worth it!!!
I would raise the basement roof. You appear to be as tall as I am and there's no way you'd even be able to do jumping jacks without taking your head off. For a good exercise space I would raise the roof.
You should definitely do what you need to do to the basement now. Construction after the fact while you live in a house stinks and it will make a difference when you resell.
👍🏻
9ft basement ceiling. No brainer. You'll make that money back and then some when you sell.
Can u make a batcave over there... would suit u
Yes, spend the $40k for the basement, you will not regret it.

Why would you building a new house in the ghetto? The area is full of old run down homes. Bizarre.
Gimmie your car
if you can afford it. I would totally do the extra excavation
