Finally it’s time to take my timber frame cabin up to the lake property and put it together! I am so excited with how it turned out. This cabin is made using traditional timber frame joinery made of Douglas fir, Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar. Make sure you also check out my previous video to see how I made all the parts for the new cabin (10x10 shed) in my shop. Thanks for following along!

Love how you leave in the real emotions of woodworking. Not everything goes to plan. There’s nothing like feeling almost totally defeated or that you’ve wasted so much energy on something, only to rise up and make that sucker brilliant!

Words cannot begin to describe how incredible that sound of the chisel slicing through wood so easily sounds! Such a beautiful sound.

I can imagine a great great grandkid replacing that window someday, finding the yellow cedar, snapping a photo and sending it to family because that’s one of those handmade details that remind them that you made this and they know the story behind it. My family has a history of carpentry, welding, and leatherwork. Those little imperfections that have a story behind them are oddly cherished by future generations.

One of my fondest memories as a 16 yr old apprentice carpenter was walking the top plate covered in morning dew as the sun slowly rose above the trees in the rolling hills of Austin Texas. I also learned when it starts raining, we go home or to the bar... ha.

Beautiful! I'm writing a book about the importance of doing hard things in our lives, and I use the analogy of building a timber frame cabin as the highest form of adventure. It takes intention, perseverance, blood, sweat, and tears. And the journey is worth it. It provides an environment for respite after adventures as well as a headquarters for planning and preparing for the next one. I'm looking forward to building something like this myself one day!

We get so obsessed with wood movement as a community, but what is forgotten is that we have the skills to adapt in such a situation. Sucks to adjust the mortises, but no one stays in the business because it all goes to plan. Nice work.

Hi Jesse. I’m a Canadian living in Japan for over 10 years now and plan to return to Canada 🇨🇦 within a few years. Lived in Victoria myself for 7 years, then Vancouver. My dream is to build an off- grid cabin. You have made me consider building a timber frame cabin like yours. All homes in Japan are timber frame. I will need to learn. I’m not an experienced carpenter like you. I completely understand and agree with your lifestyle choice. Thank you.

I feel like this kind of wood expansion is the reason historically there were specific seasons when buildings were built. I'm sure it had more to do with farming and free time, but reliable humidity and lack of rain would help a lot:)
