Building my own Offgrid Cabin part 1, Using old Tires as concrete forms for foundations!

In this video i make use of a load of old tires we have around the farm to start making concrete forms for foundations blocks for my off grid cabin. using tires as foundations is a good way to up cycle tires and save on making concrete forms.

Did this back in 2020. Took the idea from a tyre foundation build of a community centre in Tulse Hill. Not quite as big as yours about 9m x 6m but after 2 years it's still standing, no movement - no cracks in the interior plaster. Also used approx 150 tyres to pave the driveway a process called mechanical concrete. It's the way to go and saves them going to landfill Great job 👍

Ace vid! We made ours with 8' x 8' & 8' x 9' framing with 16" centres American style, from videos by English youtuber Ali Dymock. I made all the frames & my son & his mates put it all together. Size 48' X 18' with a flat warm roof on a 6" slope. Insulation was Quintherm 80mm in the floor, 90mm in the walls & 100mm in the roof. Good luck!

Using the tyres is just ingenious, The trusty old mixers still going strong. It's some size of base can't wait to see pt2 onwards see how it goes up and comes together especially now the weather getting better.

30 years old mixer and still going strong!! Should be coming together fairly fast now the graft of foundations is done 👌

I used buckets when building my house. I removed all the bottoms and kept one for the top layer. Dig a hole. Tape buckets together. Drop bucket stack in the hole. My rebar job was inadequate, but so far so good. Fill with concrete, tapping with a hammer to bring out bubbles. One thick rebar peg sticks up. I drilled a hole through a bucket bottom, and stuck it over the peg. All that to say: Perhaps a capillary break between the concrete and wood would be wise.

Hi, I can't believe you don't have more views and subscribers, I think you have a great channel. Did you need to get planning approval for the cabin? I'm assuming you need building control approval too? It would be great if you could talk about that too in one of your videos. Thanks Jim

@@FieldtoFarm_UK Yes you did, I actually forgot that you had done that. One of the few 'planning advice' type videos that I have seen that didn't advise people to just move in and 4 years later your good. I don't think I have ever seen anyone say to hire a planning expert, even though that seems to be a no brainer. Did you need to get building control approval on the cabin? I don't know if your regulations are the same as here (Northern Ireland) but as far as I know we need Building Control approval at several points, with foundations being one of them. Jim

Its basically you send the council your application with the drawing plans for the cabin if its not a standard static caravan for the dwelling and they come back with things to change etc if they don't like anything on the plan for the size or the cladding choice etc, my main issue was they wanted to know exactly whats happening with the sewage which required a fair bit of faff to sort. Otherwise from what my planner said there's not much concern over things unless your building a proper brick house

@@FieldtoFarm_UK Were they OK with this style of foundations? I always thought that concrete piles had to go down into the ground a minimum distance. Maybe it is different for your type of cabin (or maybe I am just wrong). Your way of doing it looks a lot easier than the way I was thinking of doing it Jim

Is this a permanent dwelling or to comply with the caravan act?? We’ve looked at using tyres but they’re really labour intensive 🙄

Wasnt that bad, was quicker than digging the holes for foundations instead! Its a semi permanent dwelling 👌 but that means the council either have to let me build the proper house eventually or sort a council house within a mile or so of the farm which is happening when they average 750k in the local villages lol
