Building my Offset Smoker! Part 2!

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to Day 2! Which was really a combination of Day 2 and part of Day 3, but the point is we are here! Today I finished cutting the door in, welded on the hinges and the handle, flipped the whole smoker upside down and started building the base!

    Dude, you inspire me to want to build my own smoker! Great job, thank you for sharing. I want to some day upgrade, but those Texas style offsets are really out of my budget. I know it's a lot of work but I just recently bought a welder and have been teaching myself. My objective for the welder is to modify my OKJ, I want to lower the stack to grate level and I also bought a bigger stack. Heck I might add a stack damper as well! But seeing this video makes me want to someday take on building my own.

    Thank you! It has been a fun project and definitely a lot more cost effective then buying one new! It takes a lot of work but it gives you a great sense of accomplishment when you can build your own! I'll try and get video 3 out in the next week or 2! I've been real busy with other stuff but I have most of video 3 filmed already! Thanks for watching!

    Might use a counter weight for your door so it is easy to open.

    I will definitely look into that as well! I could get the door open. But I don't know if the wife would be able to 😂

    I'm pretty excited! Had a handful of set backs at home with our electricity and it set my build back some but hopefully I'll be done by the end of this month! Thanks for watching!

    yo so what will help you with the porosity, watching you tack theres some easy things that will help you right off the bat, stick out needs to be shorter. youre way to far away. keep that nozzle around 1/2" to where youre welding. 2 slow down. dont move so fast or so wide. need to let the weld lay in, even on tacks or youre just laying it over the top. 3, run your gas between 10-20 cfh, unless its a wind storm blowing in or a big fan running you should be good to weld in your garage and that ties in with your stick out and gas coverage as well. hope those help

    Hey thank you so much! This is my first time doing any of this so any tips are appreciated! I'll will check what my gas is at and I'll try and get my nozzle closer and slow down! I got the big welds coming up, the end caps and the fire box!

    Why do you need that bar on the top hinges? Seems unnecessary?

  • @GorillaJoesBBQ

    @GorillaJoesBBQ

    So that bar is actually what the hinges spin on. It doesn't need to go all the way across, but I didn't want to cut it up and I kind of like the look of it across the whole door.

    @@GorillaJoesBBQ Yup, lots of people just use a bolt through the hinges. I actually like having the bar go all the way from one hinge to the other. I just like the look. It's good to put through to line everything up, but for me, I actually like having it there permanently. Just a design thing.

    Really dumb question but how is it that door is not falling into itself? Was it cut/angled a certain way? Again novice dumb question!!!

  • @GorillaJoesBBQ

    No dumb questions! I feel like I have harassed my smoker builder buddies with tons of questions ha. So the door might fall in at the perfect angle and if the door bracket wasn't on when I cut it out. That's why you want to make sure to cut where your brackets are first. Then weld those brackets on before you cut the rest of the door out so you don't have any problem setting the door.
