BUILDING MY HURDY GURDY // DREHLEIER BAUEN MIT WALTER SIMONS
ENGLISH SUBTITLES AVAILABLE! :)
Patty Gurdy's Facebook Page: / pattygurdy
My instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and it has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once.
If you want to support me, give me a thumbs up and share this video on any social media platform you like!

Me too. I want to get one an learn. Also I gont know the name so them. But that song Animals by Martin something or another is actually 2-3 different music pieces from medieval times or before. A classicist friend of mine the first time he heard that song was like "whoa! That dude just made a harass euro-club/dubstep song out of 3 pieces of music, the one was sample of music is from ancient Rome or Greece around the 300-400AD!" And somehow he knew the name of it and was able to look up the music by name.
Thanks for taking the time to share some of this process (as well as give it English captions for monolinguistic fools like me! =P). You and your band deserve way more attention!

Schnig A. Thanks for pointing it out in the comments! I forget they exist and my German skills are pretty dire. Made it pretty far though!
As a longtime guitarist who builds my own instruments, I found this really fascinating. Though I don’t speak German I still enjoyed this a lot. I only play guitars, but now I have been bitten by the folk music bug and I’d like to take up the fiddle and dulcimer. Who knows, maybe I’ll give the hurdy gurdy a try? I hope it’s never too late to start! BTW, Patty, I just love you and your music!
Within the captions I found (some of) the answers I had! Thank you. I am familiar with the woodworking processes that seem to be required (not just those shown), it would be lovely to spend the next 20 years making instruments for folks such as you Patty. I do understand there is much more to making musical instruments than there is in making storage boxes.
Amazing sound! Thank you for showing the process of this build
Hallo liebe Patty :-) Ich bin gerade hier so auf deinen KZread Channel gestoßen. Also echt Daumen nach oben! :)
Great video! Thanks for the English subtitles, can't wait to see, hear, and learn more :-D !!!!
Such an incredibly talented craftsman.
What a lovely work of art, both of you ;)
un meraviglioso strumento. what wonderful instrument! :)
Absolutely Fascinating!
That's beautiful!!! The instrument is beautiful too!! I'd love to be able to craft something that sounds so sweet...
It's been on my someday list to make a Symphonie. Can't wait to see more videos!

SO inviting and mesmerizing too! thank you for promoting this amazing instrument! Good luck with the "Album" launch! Ah! they are not called Albums or even CD's anymore, so what do we say these days? Good luck with the digital release?? Digital seems so foreign to an archaic instrument! Well best of the best kind of LUCK!
Cool history!
Love that sound
Ja cool. Bin buff das du aus Deutschland kommst. Weiter so.
Amazing
This is really cool
richtig schönes Instrument , unbezahlbar normal ;)
My father is a 3rd generation and although I did not follow in his footsteps, I can certainly appreciate the craft.
Very cool!
I would have liked to see a bit more on how this thing actually works. Since it doesn't have as many strings as key, I guess that the keys shorten the string, right? If so, why does it need more than one string?
@chang1865

Simply to make it louder. They can also be tuned in intervals to play chords instead of unison.
Wunderbar!

Wie lernt man denn am besten Drehleier?
Watched the first time without captions and enjoyed it just about as much as this time. Learned a lot more with the captions tho. D'oh!
Is there a place I can get dimensioned plans for this build?
Saw masks on thumbnail, and knowing they used for proper reason = priceless! \m/,. Looking forward building my own, then should probably know how to play it? Or just make it play itself? Thanks for this!
Wait so spruce is fichte, so Fichtl's lied is a spruce song? :D Also thank you for these interesting craftsmanship videos Patty and Walter. Love the music too of course
That’s cool
👏👏👏👏

Thanks for the video! I am from Bolivia and It would be great to get a Hurdy Gurdy! How can I get one?

I would like to buy the older one!
3:49 What tuners are those? Where can you buy them? =)
@p3rs0n42
They just look like standard guitar tuners. The physical stringed principle is the same as guitar, so I doubt it needs anything specialist for tuning.
For those of us who suck at woodworking and can’t find instrument woodworkers near us, how do we get hurdy gurdies?
Does this guy have a webpage?

Same here. Maybe not quite that green but a slightly more Jarhead appropriate OD green-ish... I want one. The only Hurdy Gurdies I can find that appear to be quality and like they would be comfortable to play is on EBay there are some by a Ukrainian maker for about $1200-1400 and then there are a shit ton from some maker in China that are around $1200. The place I looked at a couple years ago basically only makes the beginner small mandolin style one and do3ant make any other model anymore. :(

I did a Google search in homes to fine a websitr for Walter Simons and this is about all O could find other than a Reddit thread of other people looking for the mysterious maker of Patty's Gurdys.
Aha german that's explained a lot 🙈 I heard a bit of a german accent in your speech ;) greets from the Netherlands 👍

Who is the builder?
nice german I'm german too!!!
Your best bet is to sell them in kit packs with an instruction video. Get them made up in China. They are great but beyond the reach of most people.
😀
