Building my first wooden Surfboard (Hollow core wooden surfboard)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this "teaser" I show you a very quick look at my latest project, a hollow core wooden surfboard.
The board is made from Western Red Cedar and Paulownia with the skeleton being made out of 4mm marine ply for the ribs and 9mm marine ply for the spine.
Full DIY kits will be on sale from January 2016 if your interested in making your very own wooden surfboard.
My CNC is the Xcarve from www.inventables.com

Nothing like the smell of resin in the morning. A ton of work and a great outcome.
This creation brings back the "Artistry" that has been slowly fading, since the inception of Computer based surfboard shaping, hit the market and exploded. From my perspective, even if you don't know how to surf, that would make a great conversation piece in any persons home! For those who do surf, it's a beautiful piece to exhibit at the beach and in the surf line up!
Hot damn, this is more "old school" than I would have thought! I have seen "hollow, wooden made boards," but have never had the opportunity to try one in the surf, but have read up on them, and now in seeing the video, it's actually refeshing to witness, one being built in such a fashion! Magnificent!
nice board, also nice to see that someone is using his x-carve for something that actually makes sense!
Was just thinking, that if we were allowed to build such as these in "wood shop class" it might have been a totally different scenario, when I was in middle and High school, that is for damn sure! This would have made me come to school and stay in class, totally absorbed and wanting to learn more!
Absolutely beautiful! I love how the tips are a different direction. Nicely done!
So cool. It looks so great.
Mind officially blown. Great work and can't wait to see future videos of the detailed process.
Okay you just made it to the top of my favs! Love the board! Cant wait to see more of them built!!!!
Brilliant, that's great work. I cant wait for the next one. Well done.
Simply amazing. Beautiful boards also.

Great project really interesting to see how it all goes together. It reminds me of wooden aircraft construction. Well done
I’m glad you mentioned 123d make I’m trying to make a wakesurf board but can’t find any plans for one I’ve been familiar with board cad but this should be really helpful!
Man that was an amazing video and build! Congratulations!
Absolutely stunning Jord
Great project and video! Amazing watching you tackle something like this kind of build, Impressive! Thanks for the video

this is more than awesome..... thnks for the idea
This is absolutely amazing! keep up the terrific work and loving the videos! :)
Super, super awesome!
That's stunning mate, nice work!
Hi Jord. I've built a few kiteboards. I found using epoxy as the outer layer had two problems: It quickly yellowed from sun exposure, and it scratched up easily. I found a two-part linear polyurethane designed for yachts which did a supreme job of keeping the surface nice. (ps: That is a supreme job you've done. Respect!) - Jeff

+Jeff Rickard I will look into the polyurethane, thanks jeff!
What a beautiful and tedious project! It reminds me of building balsa wood model planes...the detailed inside stretchers if you wanna call them that. Anyways, very cool board, and I hope you and your nephew enjoy the water, but more importantly, enjoy time with each other!
Awesome project and very cool sir
awesome Jord! Serious bit of learning there with all that software to navigate... Top Job.
Sick. Probably helps having all those tools!
That looks great!

wow
Great job and very curious to see how it holds up. Certainly not knocking the design, I'm just ignorant to only using one center and 2 side rails for fastening down the top and bottom. Let us know in time! But all in all I'd say your hard work and time were well worth it! Thanks, Rick

+rickndianacom - OK I did some searching and to seems this is where most designs have gone. Thanks again I learned something very interesting, could cut down a lot of weight.
impressive
Great job ! I’m not trying to be critical but I’m think you could get that deck could be a lot better if you use more grits in between and don’t skip any. I know it’s hard but it looks like you either didn’t get the scratches from the last sanding. I’ve been at this for a long time but one thing I still use is guide coat. I mostly do boats but you and I are special when it comes to fiberglass. We laminate and don’t use molds. So we have to contend with so many factors. I came from a boat detail shop and I learned a lot about finishing before I started learning Fiberglass it really help me out a lot. When you can look in the reflection of a boat or a surfboard and you can see zero Orange peel and can read the penny date that’s what I strive for. As I said your projects looks awesome , I hope you don’t think that I am disrespecting your project because it looks absolutely awesome! Just adding some constructive criticism. Enjoy and did you say this was your first time doing this?????!! if so my hats off to you. Buy a Makita buffer they last so much longer and you hold it in a more advantageous way. Again awesome project have fun thanks for posting I liked and sub this.
Great work looks beautiful .... how much dos it weight ??
+JordsWoodShop Love your work! Just wondering what thickness the sheets of WRC and Paulownia are for the top and bottom? Thanks heaps

How did you keep your clamps from sliding off at the ends of the board? I noticed you cut away from that part.
Nicely done. (Subscribed)
Do you have the pdf plans for CAD? I have a laser cutter and would buy plans off of you if you have them

I designed and made the template in house. keep an eye out for a new video in about 3 weeks where i show you the entire process and tell you how you can get the templates/kits through my store.
How did you design the struts / fishbone at 123d make stage?? Kinda missed this whole section... It's something I've been grappling with for ages now!
Looks awesome! Where's the footage of you using it? :)
do you have the kits still?
Whats the name of the softwear???
hey man, awesome project! Im sorry I didn't quite get what software you used to make the template for the cuts? I already have my board design made with AKU shaper, I just need to make the template for the cuts and im ready to go.
Hallo. Thanks for this fantastic video. Actually, what about the weight of the whole table ?Isn't it too much for a surf board :S ?
Hey Jord! Don't know how I missed this great vid. Did you ever surf this board? Get any video?
Cool! I thought wooden surfboards were one solid piece of wood!
@JordsWoodShop
8 жыл бұрын
+knives&stuff there is a few style, there are the solid ones, very heavy, Then you have the chambered boards that are shapes from a solid piece, ripped into pieces and hollowed out to some degree and glued back together. and then you have the Hollow core ones like this.
If you get one ding though, that things gonna sink haha hows the responsiveness of the board? is it heavy or lighter because of its hollow core?
yo sick board! what timber did you use ?

Great video mate, that board looks amazing! Surprised to see your choice of glue; whenever I see that stuff in Bunnings I've always assumed (naively) that it's not particularly good quality. Is it your go to glue?
@JordsWoodShop

+Robin Lewis i like it because its a quick setting polyurethane, the Sika stuff is better for sure, but for speed you cant go past this stuff
