Building my first wooden Surfboard (Hollow core wooden surfboard)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this "teaser" I show you a very quick look at my latest project, a hollow core wooden surfboard.
The board is made from Western Red Cedar and Paulownia with the skeleton being made out of 4mm marine ply for the ribs and 9mm marine ply for the spine.
Full DIY kits will be on sale from January 2016 if your interested in making your very own wooden surfboard.

This creation brings back the "Artistry" that has been slowly fading, since the inception of Computer based surfboard shaping, hit the market and exploded. From my perspective, even if you don't know how to surf, that would make a great conversation piece in any persons home! For those who do surf, it's a beautiful piece to exhibit at the beach and in the surf line up!

Hot damn, this is more "old school" than I would have thought! I have seen "hollow, wooden made boards," but have never had the opportunity to try one in the surf, but have read up on them, and now in seeing the video, it's actually refeshing to witness, one being built in such a fashion! Magnificent!

Was just thinking, that if we were allowed to build such as these in "wood shop class" it might have been a totally different scenario, when I was in middle and High school, that is for damn sure! This would have made me come to school and stay in class, totally absorbed and wanting to learn more!

Hi Jord. I've built a few kiteboards. I found using epoxy as the outer layer had two problems: It quickly yellowed from sun exposure, and it scratched up easily. I found a two-part linear polyurethane designed for yachts which did a supreme job of keeping the surface nice. (ps: That is a supreme job you've done. Respect!) - Jeff

Great job ! I’m not trying to be critical but I’m think you could get that deck could be a lot better if you use more grits in between and don’t skip any. I know it’s hard but it looks like you either didn’t get the scratches from the last sanding. I’ve been at this for a long time but one thing I still use is guide coat. I mostly do boats but you and I are special when it comes to fiberglass. We laminate and don’t use molds. So we have to contend with so many factors. I came from a boat detail shop and I learned a lot about finishing before I started learning Fiberglass it really help me out a lot. When you can look in the reflection of a boat or a surfboard and you can see zero Orange peel and can read the penny date that’s what I strive for. As I said your projects looks awesome , I hope you don’t think that I am disrespecting your project because it looks absolutely awesome! Just adding some constructive criticism. Enjoy and did you say this was your first time doing this?????!! if so my hats off to you. Buy a Makita buffer they last so much longer and you hold it in a more advantageous way. Again awesome project have fun thanks for posting I liked and sub this.

+knives&stuff there is a few style, there are the solid ones, very heavy, Then you have the chambered boards that are shapes from a solid piece, ripped into pieces and hollowed out to some degree and glued back together. and then you have the Hollow core ones like this.
