When it's all completed, and set up primo as possible, you should contact the best guitar shredder you know to come in and tear the hell out of that fretboard. A 2x4 guitar should have the best player you know of playing it, on video of course.

I live on an island where wood is scarce and very expensive to import so learning how to build guitars with whatever wood I could find was a great cost effective way of learning and making the rookie mistakes. I still love to play a thinline style tele that is built 100% from recycled pine. Lightweight and so resonate. I don’t mind if it gets dinged up either. Great video! I enjoy practicing my craft on quality wood now.

I recently saw a Furniture Restoration video where "Wood Hardener" was brushed onto wood that was falling apart. This common product is used to stabilize rotting wood, and wood with fungus, and it was mentioned that it hardens the wood so it is "like stone," and dries fast. They also mentioned using it on "spalted" wood. I'm guessing that if it were brushed on "sparingly" or diluted, it may make soft wood quite usable, even for a guitar neck, or soft guitar bodies. I couldn't find any information on its affect on acoustic/wood vibration. 🤔

Most people don't budget the value of their time. As you mentioned - at the end of the day the cost of the wood is a small proportion of the whole project. You are right to say that the only time to do this is to practice shaping the neck ,,, don't bind or anything else. Great video, as always. Thanks.

Fun video. I've worked a lot with projects made from 2x4s and they are notoriously unstable. However, I'll bet that a six or eight piece laminated neck would be darn stable. I might try building an eight piece laminated neck glued with hide glue. Thanks for the idea.

  • @Dude_Guyman

About that temporary "spot glue" trick, I recently heard of using diluted (with water) wood glue for gluing nuts on, so as not to make such a strong bond it chips out when you change it later. Sounds like a good idea, but I've never tried it. Seems like it may be good for the spot glue too? Also, the 2x4's in my 200 year old house are probably better quality than any wood you could buy today. Maybe I will pull a couple out and make me a new Tele! 🤣 Meanwhile the 2x4's we used in a house in Arizona 10 years ago warped and twisted so hard they bowed out the siding in several humps down the sides of the house.

The message I got, and I hope it's clear to others, is that the wood is not the expensive portion of neck building. The time, the labor, the craftsmanship, are more valuable than the small portion of board feet of lumber involved. As you said many times, you have a few bucks worth of pine here, and StewMac is selling mahogany neck blanks for only $7.99. A much better value to match the work to create a musical instrument. Great job!

I really enjoyed this. I am one of those folks who work under the mindset where I hate ruining hardwood, regardless of cost. I wouldn't waste frets or a truss rod on this build if I were doing it-- I would probably drill slots and use cutting board offcuts to make basic reinforcement rods, and I would make a softwood fretboard as well. I would be solely doing this for the purpose of shaping and getting the full process comfortable. There's nothing worse than getting to the neck shaping step, and ruining it after dropping a couple hundred dollars into it.

You brought up some other great points Matt about the knots and hard grains not flattening out properly. That will most likely case some issues for the player. Also the checks which pine invariably does when it starts to dry out. But the real test will be time to see how the neck performs with the weather. While it's possible to use cheaper cuts of wood for a guitar build, the difference in cost of timbers really isn't that great. And being it's an instrument, why not use something that at least looks nice? But I'm all for using different special of wood for unique instruments. There's an Australian builder (from Perth I think) that makes them from Tassie Oak. BTW I remember watching a video from Wills Easy Guitar where he made a guitar out of a bag of rough firewood...neck and all. Lotta work though

Two thoughts: 1. Is a 2x4 guitar marginally better than a plywood guitar? (Maybe because of the weight savings. Maybe not because of the instability/soft wood.) 2. Do an opaque paint job on it. Then you can hand it to folks and let them play it and to see if they can tell it is made with inferior wood. A blind tone test, if you will. 😉

The Strawman guitar series - Where we invent a problem, just to struggle with it and show why it's a bad idea. But really, I'd prefer watching you just making quality stuff, with good materials, the right way. I second that oak sucks for a neck, and it gets the same facets you got with this neck.... just because Brian May did it doesn't make it a great idea.. The guitar you build with it will probably end up neck diving too, oak is heavy. On another note, that little green oscillating edge sander that was in the back ground at the beginning, would that be a good neck shaping tool in leu of a dead head sander? I'm still doing all my neck shaping with rasps and sandpaper. I've contemplated getting one of those for doing necks, but i'm not sure if it would work/be worth the money, since i already have a vertical belt sander and a spindle sander in the shop. It would be a dedicated neck shaping tool if i got one.

I think you can never have too many videos that emphasize the order of go in any particular facet of guitar building. You simply cannot reinforce that stuff enough. So for me, the videos are useful and intriguing - and not because of the novelty angle of using crap wood to try to make something nice. Instead, my takeaway is that neck building is complex and involves a lot of steps, and why not just take it slow, be careful and instead of "fighting wood" (we all have had that experience) unnecessarily, why not honor the need for precision and order in construction by starting with good materials? On that point alone, which you demonstrate in spades here, the video(s) are invaluable.

hate that you bitched about it all the way through, but you did it. I am a goldsmith for 35 years , we taught everything with mock ups. it was learning techniique over it being perfect.. set a 1.00 dollar cz versus a 10,oo dollar Diamond. yeah I love that you went through the process even though it was just a kick in the balls and annoying. thanks for your work.

I did this so you don't have to But I did enjoy the process it just seemed foolish. I don't know if people are killed for mahogany the way they have been for diamonds but the lumber isn't that much more expensive
