The most surprising thing for me in this video was you being able to actually find a Lowes associate available in your store to cut wood on the panel saw.

For whatever reason my local Lowe’s can’t cut a straight line

Went there to get my own countertop supplies and waited for over an hour after asking for help twice, left.. went to the other lowes on the other side of town, picked out boards (the only 4 non corkscrewed ones in the whole store).. was told the saw guy went home for the day. Went back to the first store the next day, was told the saw was out of order until further notice. Went to the second lowes, nobody knew the password to the saw, was told to come back the next day. Just a regular week.

The stores are super hit or miss. there’s always a specific lowes I go to when I need wood broken down for me
Been working in a laminate counter top and cabinet shop for the last two years, haven't seen this done before. Very cool. Looks good. Great job!
Dang. I really liked the matte laminate. Everything is turning out awesome! That sink is mint.
I learned way more than expected! I would have just tried to put it on without the spacers, and wound up crying. I have new wood for under the sink, I'm definitely going plastic! Thank you so much ♥
Really cool. There are a lot of little details I really like with your videos. The older I get the less intimidating these projects are. Looking forward to getting started on my own kitchen!
Awesome job! I love all of it in this kitchen. A tip for you: If you want your top to be easily removable, please consider the possibility of using "famos" type connectors (approx € 0.4 each) instead of pocket holes. This hardware can be also used in cabinet making for any 90° fast joint.
Great video, Johnny! Countertops look great! You definitely want to elevate that loop of corrugated dishwasher drain line above the connection to your disposal. Otherwise, you’ll have dirty water just sitting in that section.
Gorgeous!!👍👍👍 Thanks for sharing really really like the top (and I'm happy you had to took the other top 😅). For sink installation a plumber told me a trick. If you chalk the sink fill it halfway up and let it in there for 24 hrs until the chalk is hardened so you get a perfect press fit around the sink.
Great video. I've been doing laminate countertops and much more, for over 30yrs... Fyi: what i have found to use as a separation of laminate & plywood - VINYL BLINDS. They are fairly thin, but thick enough to give you the separation.. And they're easy to clean. I have multiple strips for various projects... Such as, narrow and wide laminate countertops, I do a lot of medical facility door laminate and cabinet laminate so the shorter panels work perfectly.... Thanks for the video.. always good to see how other people approach a project. . .
I like how you showed us even your mistakes.
Awesome video. Great tips.. plus I'll be completely remodeling our kitchen. This countertop can save me some money. Also thanks for keeping all the mistakes that you did. Its awesome to see that you can deal with anything, just gotta be patient with yourself! And none of us perfect 👌
Been searching for hours on how to do thick edges on plywood countertop!! Many thanks!!
- What a great job ! ! ! Your skills are evident & nice to watch. Thanx.
Nice job with the laminate sir! Another old trick and alternative to the dowels or extension cords to keep the glued laminate from touching the glued plywood top is to use old metal or plastic Venetian blinds strips. They stack easily in the tool chest and can be re-used for years. Cheers!
- Lots of work that ended in a 'great' project to learn from. Thanx 4 sharing.
i appreciate the fact that you show when you screw up!
Exposed plywood edges aren't for everybody but you did a great job with it!

@C II I think it works with the cabinets he's using - modern euro style. A more traditional style cabinet, then yeah I'd probably go with an oak edge.
Hey Johnny. Dude, I love your channel and I love your projects because you’re the most realistic and practical DYIer. Other guys with a dyi channel are using these machines that cost thousands of dollars and they need a huge studio to house them and/ or make these crazy modifications and use techniques that trained carpenters have a hard time perfecting. Your projects are always fantastic, actually doable for a novice or pro DYIer. I hope you and your family are well during these crazy times. Going to try this project myself as I want to make my own garage bar... maybe an idea for a future video ? Thanks a lot Jonny.
Somewhere between retro sleek and modern. I personally love the look of the counters and top! Dope vid Johnny.
Totally digging this series! Keep it up Johnny!!!!
Worktops look really cool and modern, great job. Real high end kitchens in Europe often have exposed birch ply. It seems a lot of America is along way behind Europe with regards to kitchen trends. I see a lot of new kitchens in the states are similar styles to we had in the late nineties.
Wow, man. This project is coming along nicely. I love it!!!
BIG fan of the laminate/plywood counter top combo
Looks great! What a wonderful budget friendly idea!
fantastic. I am starting this project soon. I got 50 sheets of 3/8" baltic birch thru a friend for $6 each and this is the perfect use. I will triple it up for a 1 1/8" buildup.
I actually love our induction top. It works great instant on and off heat like gas.
These are so pretty. Just gave me an idea. Thank you! 👍🏻👍🏻
Just an idea. I would stain the plywood edges a darker color to match the top to much of a contrast otherwise instead of the clear coat. In the end though it is want you like.
Love this. So inexpensive and yet stylish.
outstanding project and results! KZread is doing a great job sending your earlier vids I've miss into the feed! so coool. hope your weekend is a perfect one
As I also like the look of the visible plies in plywood, I built the table top for my assembly table in my garage from 1250 x 42mm (49" long x 1 /5/8" wide) staves of scrap 13/16" formwork plywood from work with the resin surface planed off, and ended up with a 1200 x 840 x 40mm (47 1/4" x 33" x 1 9/16") slab. I finished the edges with a 1/8" roundover bit and treated the surface with 4-5 coats of satin clear flooring laquer. It came out absolutely fantastic. :) I mounted the table top to the 2x4 frame with 9 countersunk carriage bolts (rectangular frame 1000mm long x 760mm wide with a central crossmember).
Thanks for showing the errors you made. It helps a novice like me feel better about tackling a project like this.
A simple trick that I learned from my father; laminate cut outs make great tops for children's art tables. That's great look and the cost is awesome.
TY 4 making the screw ups for us. We’re learning what not 2 do & what to do… batters up!
Nice job Johnny. We just bought a house a while back and the inspector gave us a tip...get a hose clamp or something and get that dishwasher drain higher than where it connects to the drain, otherwise nasty stuff hangs out in the low spot and stinks. Love the video!
Looking good so far, love the exposed plywood edging effect as well 👍🏻
Great video, I love your out of the box thinking. Cool t-shirt by the way. Finnegan's garage is one of my other fav channels
Looks great! Nice job filming and editing!
Kitchen is lookin' good, man!
Really BEAUTIFUL job!!!!👏👏👏👏
I usually add a strip of solid oak to cover the plywood edges before applying the formica. The oak gives a nice finished look. But it's cool if plywood edge is your thing.

You can also get laminate edging that matches the top. I did this for some built in desks, and people thought I’d ordered custom granite until I had them look under the top. The trick is to not get a round-over edge but one where the top comes to a sharp corner. So the line/seam is hidden in the line of the corner, then run a bead of color matched silicone along the corner.

@@na-fv7cl No need to be snarky. As I said in original comment bare plywood is cool if that's what you like.
I learned from a different creator that for 90 degree corners it’s safer to do a diagonal line and then trim out the excess triangle after it is glued down. Love how this turned out.
Love that plywood edge.
Great video and the countertops look great. Thank you.
This is actually a good vid for those of us without all the fancy-schmancy stuff you have (though I do still enjoy watching that too).
You posted this right on time lol. I too would like a black countertop/drawers but I also love the look of exposed ply edges. I looked into Coverply which is perfect and would be a lot less work than this but MAN is it ridiculously expensive!!
17:33 Came out great, nice job. Couple tips Ive learned. Using Silicone to seal garbage disposal drains in a Stainless steel sink seems to hold up a lot better over time. The heaviness of the disposal, mixed with the thinness/light weight of the metal sink can vibrate the putty out over a few years. And also if not using an air gap when running the dishwasher drain hose it's best practice to run it through the top (about 32" high) of cabinet to prevent any siphoning or backflow problems 🤙🏼

@@randalllawkin you just type the time in your comment with the colon : symbol 👍
Well... you know how it goes.. someone like me is going to comment. 1. turned out great. I may do something like this. 2. Nortric birch.. 3. use dowels.. like 100 of them. 4. you can also come back with a block of wood and a hammer. Smacking that down really makes it grab the adhesive. 5. put a round over on that. 1/8 - 1/16th. Really softens the edge. A Seriously good job. I have the same layout minus the area to the outside of the washing machine. Going to start doing the math to do this. Got a like and a sub. ;)

Thanks! The countertops are still holding up great, although the price of wood right now definitely makes them a little more pricey!
Flexing on us with the All Clad. Great stuff
Love the look of this!!
The straight butcher block looks a lot better! But thanks for the info. I always appreciate craftsmanship!
I keep referring back to this video. This video is very helpful thankyou
Love the look of wood edge exposed, and flat laminate WOULD have have been my choice, too. As for induction cook top, I have wanted one forever. Checking the videos from site, does it have a timer feature? I bought the free standing (with timer) style to see if I'd like it. Yes, great choice! Magnetic pots & pans ARE important. Most All Clad work, unless they pay finish is on it...Sorry Julia Child pot. I was 'told' the sinks like that couldn't accommodate disposals. Thanks for showing they can. Research! Ohhh Honey! He just said...after figuring out what your vid showed. " We're inTrouble, ladies & gentlemen." Great video!
I was waiting for this sooooo bad.
Glad I subscribed. You're an inspiration.
Greeat modern look and a nice install job.
idk if im a fan of the exposed plywood. but for 300 bucks.... It is looking really really attractive.
Nice work, I personally like the granite, and wood that was there before better, but to each their own. But I would like to say, I totally respect the fact that you showed everything, including your screwups. I like that you didn't edit that stuff out, because we all know that stuff happens. What you were going for in the end looked very professional, skilled. I learned a lot!

Great video. You have a great way of explaining!
video production level = master... very nice
Awesome video ,instructions ....( I do prefer to have it in a little slower pace thou ) Love the idea about using strips vs. a whole new sheet of plywood. Everything came out beautiful.. Great job. Thank s again
Blahaha the music queue for the garbage disposal hose was priceless! Counter tops look awesome though, such a cool inexpensive option 👍🏽
I’ve used laminate on a few projects with good results, vanity door fronts with wood edge, desk top also with wood edge. There’s a LOT of laminates out there with all sorts of colors, styles, and textures. But I have to say the big players like Formica and wilsonart aren’t making it easy for contractors or hobbyist woodworkers to get it. You pretty much need to find a local cabinet maker and hope they’ll order for you. Btw I went induction from gas years ago and love it.
I really like the idea of using the strips instead of 2 full sheets of plywood. I don't have much counter space but I'll probably still do the same
Digging the Finnegan speed and marine shirt, maybe you can teach him how to better re-build the bed for one of his many ramp trucks
I heard the heartbreak about losing the timelapse. Still great and helpful and under 20 mins! Nice work, sir.
Like your open honest approach man, nice come back with the laminate; shit happens! 👍
another shout out for induction! Thanks for the video 🙂
Hot damn that sink looks awesome!
Awesome video my man 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Little did he know that his counter top table made from ply wood would be the most expensive choice in the future...
Nicely done. Stay safe my friend
Old mini blinds can also be used as spacers for the laminate, just make sure you grab them all as you stick the laminate down.
Next kitchen remodel try to install the faucet BEFORE you install the sink! Great video and channel! Thx John 😎👍
I have found that using vinyl blind slats works really well so it has your piece super close but it still doesn't stick together
We have the same pans. All-Clad copper core. Love mine.

Coming from another fellow carpenter, you did a great job filming the process. (Sometimes a camera can't show the true work being done! ) Keep building my friend!
Wow, I was thinking about your next video coming out, you just uploaded.
The FSM shirt is awesome.
Looks great. I love that you have a good variety of projects.
Excellent. I love the finish. Speaking from experience, you should have sealed all the edges. Water finds a way.
Definitely not my style for a kitchen specifically but as always your craft and how you tell the story is top notch. Really excited to see more of the island butcher block! Hope you're staying safe during these weird times.

Jeeeeez!! Truly an ambitious job! Beautiful work!! …however, this convinced us we need to hire a guy 😅
You do really awesome work I enjoy your page alot
Super cool great work
Nice work! Question; I would have thought to glue the laminate on the top without trimming it, and make a trim cut just once. Had you thought of that? Just wondering the reasoning for what seems like an extra step.
very surprising that you went with laminate countertop in this super nice kitchen with state of the art appliances.
I think you can share meal making video in your new kitchen. Nice work btw. Keep up the gokd work dude, I love your channel.
great work!
I really like how you show & explain your 'whoopsies' so that we are careful to not have the same brain farts. Thanks!
Liked and subscribed!!! Great job!
On my Garbage Disposal Drain I put a Clean-out “Y” just past the trap on the second PVC Glue joint, first joint is the Slip X Compression adapter. Also Moen makes a neat Faucet pull out hose bag so the hose doesn’t get hung up on anything and is damaged. Moen Part Number 159060
I love these videos where the guy has an entire workshop and show how to do something cheap…
nice work!
