Building and setting up the LongMill MK2 CNC machine

I run through the assembly of this LongMill MK2 48x30 CNC machine including tips and tricks to ensure it runs as smooth as possible. Show you how to get this initially setup on your PC or laptop as well as fixing it down to your workbench and testing everything is square and parallel.

    Stepcraft missed an opportunity to work with you. I like Longmill, it is nice & had it been available (mk2) when I was in the market, it is the one I would have gotten at that bracket. Edit: Oh I did not realize they were still using nylon. Cheap to replace but I wish to see them go to steel on steel motion in the future if they are dead-set on using wheels. Not a bad thing, it is still a big value & better (I think) than the old Stepcraft 2 brass on aluminum motion system.

    Those wheels are the one thing I don't care for about this otherwise very impressive machine. I wonder if one could get bearings in that size? Seems like a better choice to me.

    Hey James, I was thinking about getting the 3030-PROVer MAX from your other review with the Makita router to cut small aluminum parts on occasion, but I also want to get a larger machine mainly for wood such as this Longmill or the Ultimate Bee in my new workshop. Do you think that I can completely skip the 3030-PROVer MAX and use these larger machines to cut aluminum? Would this Longmill or the Ulmate Bee be able to cut aluminum similarly to the 3030-PROVer MAX?

  • @JamesDeanDesigns

    @JamesDeanDesigns

    2 ай бұрын

    The LongMill is good for large scale vs budget, but is not good for machining soft metals. The UltimateBee is better but geberally speaking the larger the machine, poorer they will perform machining metal

    This machine's biggest problem it misses Y axes beams - wooden tables change their shapes and forms due to air humidity, making the machine misaligned with time.

    Look at a torsion box. Made one for my MK2 and if you spend the time to make it flat and seal it shellac or something on all 4 sides when done it hasn't changed over time when I have resurfaced it. I set my torsion box on a 2x6 frame with some Bora wheels on the bottom and it worked out nicely.

  • @TheUsernamechris

    Concentric means that the holes would be in-line with each other. In this case the threaded hole is offset from the bore of the nut, making them eccentric 👍 Glad you love your CNC!
