Building an LS Swapped Jeep Cherokee XJ: New Project Overview

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've been contracted to build an LS swapped jeep cherokee XJ for a customer who drove all the way from Texas with his Jeep Cherokee for me to install the new engine. Its a 1998 Cherokee Sport XJ 2 door, which is one of my favorite styles of jeep of all time. LS swaps are all the rage lately, and this is one I havent tried myself, so I was all on board to get started. Its gonna have an LQ4 6.0 truck engine with an LS6 car intake, a cam upgrade, and a whole host of other LS swap parts which should make this installation a breeze. This will be part of a series on the LS swap in an XJ cherokee, and this video covers all the parts you'll need to successfully LS Swap your jeep, including the mounts, headers, exhaust, wiring, cooling system, transmission, and more.

@@jestinmorse8248 It should be a blast, I originally built a stroker and it was ok. But then I put 1 tons, and 40 inch tires, and it was not ok anymore. Lol. We estimate the Lq4 should be around 500 to 550 hp, so that should be better than ok, I hope. I will say there is a bunch a nickle and dime stuff that you don't think about before the build.

For those of you new to the 'LS' World: its the Gen 3 and 4 Chevy Small block, replaced the 350cid from the earlier years. LT already gave us the basics the LR4 (4.8) LM7 (5.3) and LQ4/LQ9 (6.0), TRUE LS engines are aluminum, the LS1/LS6 (5.7) LS2 (6.0) and Believe it or not a fwd based LS4. Theres also a big bore LS7 but thats basically the archangel Michael in engine form. After that then the engine codes get crazy: L59, LM4, L33, LS3 ( camaro 6.2), L99, LSA ( supercharged :3) L94, L76, L77, L96, L98, L20, LH6, LY5, LMG, LC9, LH8, L92, L9H, LY6 (gen 4 iron 6.0 RIchard holdners favorite) , LFA ( not the toyota), LZ1, LS9 AND THEN you get to the aftermarket LSX blocks, like the LSX376 and LSX454 after that chevy went to the 5th Gen Block "LT" which do not share bits from the earlier years.

Very cool but also a incredibly heavy engine. Dry, undressed weight is up in the 700 lb range. A lot of frame reinforcement is needed for a swap like that. It’s not quite as cool but a 1.9 tdi swap is always a good diesel option.

I had a 97 XJ 4.0L 5 speed 2 door 2WD. Weighed under 2900 lbs, and was a hoot to drive. Later in its life, I realized it wasn't going to be going off road as much, so I swapped the tires down to 235/60R15. Dropped it 7/8" with no altering of suspension. Even that made it handle much nicer. The leaf springs and solid axles front and rear weren't ideal for handling, but the absurdly low weight and nice torque covered a multitude of sins.

Those tires are way overpressured with a 5" contact patch. Do the circle track test. White shoe polish across the tread,( outside to outside) Lower pressure till the outside white disappears. Thats the pressure for your combo.

This is great! I have been on the fence for this swap for years. I really wanted to use a gen V/L83 just because they are so cheap now but there are no swap kits out there. I like the novak stuff but the headers are made by sanderson and are just repackaged from Novak....I wish someone could read me the part numbers off of those headers! 4L60Es make me nervous but I agree with the gearing for this project. Any more info on the accessory relocation kit from LS simple? Hopefully it is cheaper than the Holley kit! I am anxious to see if how much of the jeep harness will be left after the Terminator is installed. The factory jeep fuel pump with the old tried and true Corvette regulator combo seems to be the hot ticket with this project.I am going to be following this one close!

Damn looking at a solid $10,000+ in parts alone. I’m sure I’m way off on that estimate. Id be very happy with 50 extra WHP on my Cherokee with the 5-speed. Would love to do a budget LS conversion or maybe supercharge.

I don't know what part of Texas he's in but I'll be surprised if that electric fan setup will cool the engine in S.E. Texas during the summer. That flex plate looks about as flimsy as the 4.0L flex plate. The 4.0 will brake out the center of the flexplate easily there isn't a heavy duty option for the LS?
