Building an excavator grading beam from scrap metal

I'm building a grading beam for a mini digger / mini excavator, (Yanmar sv17), from scrap metal I had home. Cutting, welding and some lathe work for the roller bearings.
It is a really cheap and easy build especially if you make it without the roller attachment.
I will use the grading beam in future videos for grading and leveling.
Main tools used in this video:
Welder: Migatronic Automig 273
Metal bandsaw: Femi ABS NG120
Lathe: Blomqvist 600

Thank you👍 I plan to make one someday. I tried just dragging a pallet behind me, and it works. Also tried to attach pallet with some extra weight to excavator👍

Very interesting idea. It is somewhat limited to machines with tilt bucket options, which is not as common as a thumb. Without the tilt option you have to keep adjusting grading blade to get the machine to correct pitch, then, once you swing the house to another position, you are out of level once again. I can grab just about any piece of wood or steel with my thumb and achieve similar results, but I have to keep adjusting the angle to match the grade I need. When I'm done though, or need to add material, or excavate more aggressively, I can just toss the wood/steel off to the side and keep digging with the bucket that is still mounted on the machine. You have to disconnect and go find where you left your bucket again, or use another machine to bring more fill in. Every tool has advantages and disadvantages. Great welding project!

You're right about that! I have not even thought about it. Here in Sweden, almost nobody is using thumbs. Almost everyone uses tilt or rotor tilt. However, I am very eager to mount a thumb on my machine. It seems to be a very good accessory.

Great idea, but you need to get the attachment level and then back up in reverse... this way the height of the attachment is always level vice trying to operate the attachment level. Hope this makes sense.

Snyggt jobbat!

It depends on what kind of unit really, but I would say between €650-1000 for a regular tilt like the one mounted on my machine.

  • @altagravtjanst8134

It is a common tilt quick hitch, I don't know the brand tho. The quick connector for the bucket is called s30, a common system here in sweden. S30 for small machines, s40, s50 and so on, depending on machine size.

It behooves me why with a lathe at your use WHY WOULD YOU CUT THE SMALL BARS TO MAKE THE SUPPORT ON THE ROLLER when you have the lathe that you can cut the inside of the pipe and put the pin in it in one swift action. this would save the time and trouble of finding the size needed to make 4 extra pieces and could save making the cap's. By cutting the circle for each end you would have a more concentric circle for the roller and it would save time putting all of this together and .you would be welding the back of the pin and you could even double the piece for more strength. Other wise it all works.

Hi Kerry, hehe I actually agree with you, I normally prefer without music. But as this video is in time lapse and quite long, I thought it could be nice with some relaxing music in the background and thought that classic style piece did fit. But thanks for your comment, I might considering removing it if it is too annoying. Have a good day!

@@LoBeau53 I sure do but nobody likes watching silent videos! The tractors make their own sound that people like to hear without the music. And people also like to hear the operator talking about the equipment or the job. They don't need music covering him up either especially since the music has nothing to do with the video or the contents.
