Building an awesome badass Rat Rod Scooter

I started this project on day two of learning how to stick weld.
The parts donor bike had been sitting out in the rain for about 4 years.
"Rat Rod" refers to a hot rod that is very low to the ground, bare metal, rusty, crappy but cool looking and was the inspiration for this build.
Here's a video I made about learning to weld: • Teaching myself how to...

    That's a great father and son project and that scooter looks like a lot of fun. Just remember you don't have to be a good welder, just a good grinder!

    the part where the scooter broke in half ... twice ... yeah, that ended up on the cutting room floor. But my grinding has really improved!! 😁 I love the challenge but it's kind of frustrating when somebody sneezes in the next room and my welds fall apart. 🙃

    Thanks very much Vic. As a beginner welder (stick welding at that) I knew it was going to be ugly so the rat rod philosophy "Viva la ugly" seemed to be appropriate here - so that's why I just clear coated it. Building it was a lot of fun, but like you however I'm probably not going to ride it much - I use it to go out to the mailbox at least and my son spins around the driveway making me nervous that he's going to scratch the hell out of my car .. lol.

    I barely got it together - I had to weld plates over where I burnt big holes - but it made it more "rat" so it looked intentional. Watch out for my next project - Rat rod black walnut live edge waterfall table 😆 (gawd I hope it doesn't come to that)

    Sweet little father son project! Your turning into a real fabricator. Are you welding in a fleece jacket? Clothes and shoes that are made with synthetic material such as polyester can ignite and melt to you skin. It's bad. This kid in welding class dropped an amber on his track shoe and it went Chernobyl.🔥

  • @TakamiWoodshop

    @TakamiWoodshop

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Tony. Ha! it is fleece. it was day two of welding - remember my last vid where I was getting sunburn? I had to wear something and I didn't have any leather jackets lying around - I moved on from them in the 90s dude. The rest of my attire is all leather though - leather boots, socks, underwear (man they make my balls itch). I think I'm pretty safe - but I'll have to get my set up cleared by Make Things - he's a real safety police 😆.

I did EVERYTHING you told me to do, double checked, triple checked... there was nothing else I could have done other than just trust you that you knew what you were talking about.. MY FIRST RIDE on this thing, and the thing just shreds up on me, , the tires went flat, the chain fell off, i crashed... into oncoming traffic and two people almost died... i should sue you for making this video... you didn't tell us that this could be very dangerous... no warning at all..
