Building an Aquaponic Farm in 8 Months - Was it Worth It? Ep 10
Alright tribe! Phase 1 of our Aquaponic Farm is done! It wasn't easy dealing with stuff like language barriers, a new environment, crazy Philippine weather, and totally different farming methods. But hey, we made it happen! We're still tweaking things, figuring out the best crops to grow for the best bang for our buck. But being part of the local farming scene and learning from them while sharing our own knowledge? Totally worth it. A lot of folks were skeptical, but seeing our farm in action has given them hope for the future of Filipino agriculture. Isla Eden is gonna be more than just a farm - it's going to be a place to learn about aquaponics, innovate, and train future farmers. Thanks for sticking with us! Lots more exciting stuff on the horizon, so stay tuned! 😉
Just a quick shoutout to all of you for your incredible support! Isla Eden is pioneering large-scale aquaponic farming in the Philippines, aiming to create sustainable livelihoods and revolutionize farming for small-scale farmers. I want to learn this new way of producing food, can I visit your farm? Where is your location in Bohol?

Teammate for life!
When will you be doing solar? Have you also considered black soldier flys?

In the new year once our building is completed. We’ll mount the solar on the roof. Soldier flys, yes! We made a short on unlimited chicken feed😉🤙🙏
Congrats and it's great seeing the progress of your hard work. Question though, based on previous calamities that happened in Bohol, do you have contingency plan if ever a storm hit and flooded the farm? Do you have back-up power generator to operate the pump for the fish? Have you also consider designing vertical garden to maximize the volume of the plants within a limited space? What do you think of the pros and cons of vertical garden? Thanks. And keep up the good work sir.

Thanks so much for watching the journey! There are lots of calamities, brown outs, and more that we did consider. Our electrical panel has a switch for a generator and we will also be installing solar with batteries for raining days and night requirements. A generator would be our backup backup plan. We also will drill a well but also have a large rain water catch cistern that holds enough water for about a month of drought. We will be expanding with vertical garden design and at the moment building our floating gardens for the ponds to maximize space and nutrients. We have a lot of fish so there’s a lot of nitrate that requires more plants to soak it all up. I love vertical gardens for space efficiency and the only downside is not being able to grow root crops but that’s what our grow beds can do. Great questions and it just depends on the preference of the grower or farmer. I like it all and we wanted the option of crops so the grow beds are great for that. Thanks again for watching and can’t wait to share more of the social enterprise soon!
Except that a forest was cleared.

Not quite a forest. Just lots of green plants that grow in quickly. We’re in a an area where there are residences with little work locally. Made sure to create jobs locally
where's the location boss salamat

Hope to learn from your channel, we have 5 hectare in Pangasinan, Philippines and aquaponics has always been my dream
Seems completely unsustainable to me. Instead of building up the soil, which is what real sustainable agriculture is, aquaponics has to rely on constant inputs. Soil that is built up over time will reduce inputs over time as well. Aquaponics will always require the same inputs. Aquaponics is great when there's limited soil availability. Doesn't seem to be the case here. What am I missing? I don't mean to sound condescending (although it probably does come across that way, and I apologize) and I'm open to being educated.

We do appreciate the question as it does seem that way in an area that is so green! Thank you for the apology but I totally understand and I appreciate your passion for agriculture that is truly sustainable. Here in this island, the terrain and soil is very rocky and some areas have tons of limestone with makes cultivating soil very difficult for farmers. The infrastructure of water is limited so access to water for farming isn’t available in many areas. For example, our aquaponics farm has not had water available for over 2 months with water for the neighbors being trucked in once a week. Our farm has thrived in the midst of the lack of water. Most of the locals in our area farm rice during the raining season on the low laying areas that will flood and work well for rice. This allows opportunity to farm where soil and water isn’t available for many locals since much of the islands is similar to our location, we hope to use this as an example and also training center to help with other methods. Soil development is one of those methods as we do composting and soil layering along with raised beds on our property as well. The thing is we wanted to show the extent of new methods. Hoping to inspire a new generation of farmers to stay and come into the industry. Aquaponics is very effective because of that but the reality is not many locals can afford the build of the system and soil development is one of top training priority as well. We just show off our aquaponics on the channel 😉 I hope that helps and let us know if you have more questions 🤙
Regenerative agriculture thru homesteading, permaculture and agroforestry are the best methods for the future of mankind and the planet and not this aquaponics system. Try to look up for the works of Vandana Shiva, Laxman Singh, Andrew Millison and many Amesh homesteading experts to start with. Also try to check the works of Dr. Elaine Ingham. What a waste to have cleared the 2 acres forest and replace it with this unsustainable aquaponics system.

You already have the influence as you have already caught the attention of these politicians. I just hope that it is not too late to change course and really make a sustainable impact to both the planet and the ecosystem.
