Building an All-Aluminum, Fuel Injected FE Ford (with a Carroll Shelby Block!)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the '60s and '70s, the FE was Ford's designated racing engine. It won races in NASCAR, LeMans and drag racing, and we're building an updated, all-aluminum FE with electronic fuel injection and a sweet Borla Induction stack injection setup. This FE is machined, assembled and dyno'ed by Prestige Motorsports in Concord, NC, and it has to be the ultimate engine for any Cobra or GT40 replica build.

    Whoever is shooting, directing and editing these Horsepower Monster videos deserves a lot of praise. Little to no obnoxious heavy metal music, great lighting, interesting and illuminating tight shots, excellent narration, and great editing choices. Watching the tech struggle with hand fitting piston rings before shaking his head and giving up, then using expanding pliers, made me laugh for a good minute. Great job.

    It was all right it's still one of my favorites but the 385 series is better as far as being able to get power and reliability The thing that made this engine so great is from the factory completely assembled with cast iron manifolds and intake it was still a 650 lb motor instead of like 750 like a big block Chevy which ironically is a much better breathing engine with open shared heads

    All 4 American car companies made some amazing bad ass iron. I love FEs because we kicked Ferrari's arrogant ass with them. FE stood for "Fairlane engine" and was a luxury car's motor before Ford realized the "Y" block design was able to hold together at high HP and high RPMs. Yes the BBC makes more power per dollar than an FE but if you have the cash these engines with the right heads (Cammer) were the top dogg! Man I miss the proud days of Detroit muscle.

    For an old dinosaur they were not only powerful they took a ton of abuse even in their stock form from the factory. all 10:1+ compression versions made good power for their era. Seen many sit on rev limiter or near for minutes at a time and keep on a running. You look at gm's modern Ls there's similarities that a builder can't deny.

    The Horsepower Monster : Gracious thankyou for sharing. Its not all about Dolly Parton attributes on the Torque and Power curves and what not. Its about the shear enjoyment of how a nice aluminum FE 482 with steel liners will go together and just last a lifetime in a the owners ride. The Vertical and Horizontal are controlled by the bill payer, and its awfully easy to mess up an alloy engine. Prestigue did the hard part. Incidently, I remember being critical about power figures on a 200 Ford six with Classic Inlines head. Now I realise what a jerk I was seeing how I responded to the 501 hp gross at 5400rpm figure. Mine is a 4.25" bore with a 428 CJ crank -- 452 cu. in. Any decent engine should make 1.2 HP/ cu. in. and 1.2 to 1.4 lb. ft/ cu. in. This engine with Trick Flow Heads and a decent cam should make nearly 600 hp and at least 580 lb.ft. torque.

    turbo32coupe and Luke Teverino: According to Stan Weiss et al, the heal over point where power and rpm are made is based on port area and valve lift, and actual port Cfm through the inlet at that lift. It is not Cfm but throttle body size that is pegging power back. The advent of Split Dominator carbs on SOHC 427s in 1970 was because of a very big problem finding traditional Injection and Weber carb sizes in the desired 1-7/8 to 3 inch sizes which make real power. . Past 342 cubic inches on domestic V8s, any Independent Thottle Body/ Isolated Runner/ Port on Port engine in the 45 to 61 cube, 3/4 to 1 liter.cylinder size will have to go psychotic in port size and Throttle body size to get even get past 550 hp. 48 mm throttles without a specific cam and port size will start to top out at just 444hp. To just get a gain, you have to move to 50 and perhaps 55 mm to get 685 hp at as little as 5700 rpm..

    The Ford FE is called a Big Block. Ford started the design in the mid 50's 332 and refined and kept increasing displacement to 352 360 390 406 410 427 428 all the way to 1968. Many modern engines especially the LS engines , as well as other modular engine designs borrow heavily from the FE. Design cues are apparent -- such as::: 6 bolt or cross bolted mains, deep skirt block to enclose the crank for more rigidity, support and strength, all while saving weight. Huge deep breathing cylinder heads. ..and on and on....ad nauseum.

With a 1014 hp at the crank and a manual trans is. 857 at the wheels, run a single 4 inch straight out the side, and cruise around under the boost curve and when you hit the whistle let that modern magic do its job.

    In fact I have a 3 rib (like the CJ/SCJ) FT 391 block that has the 105 mark. I have a 428 crank and a CapSaddle that ties the center 3 Mains together. The drill bit test showed 3/16 between the bores. Indicating that 4.13 is possible, if not I have a 3.79 FT steel crank that could be offset ground to 3.89. and bore it to 4.098, for 410 ci. 2.2 rod journals, 6.7 rods , 1.72 r/s. 245@.050 .588 hyd roller. VS 7875 with 10 lbs boost with 545 hp na, 915 hp fw. 776 at the wheels. I think that the stock block can do that with a rising boost curve. That would be fun with a Summit turbo and home made piping. I have good headers and just make a 2.5 crossover and mount the turbo to kick a 4 inch pipe straight out the side. It would be as quiet as a Harley until you get hard on the whistle. 10 lbs of boost isn’t a lot.

I used a 74 FE 360 truck block , forged crankshaft and H beam rods with summit pistons , ported Edelbrock heads I bought used but in great shape and a old Street master intake and Holley 850 cfm carb and a Comp Cams 268 H cam. There's nothing left on the table with the parts being used giving every drop of HP & torque they can provide. But it's how the tuning , porting and minor details involved that made the thing a wicked NA Ford FE. I took the advice of a Older Drag racer with decades of Squeezing everything from a FE they could give. It's smart to pay attention to those who paved the way for the rest of us

    I had a 67 Fairlane 500 with a 390 backed up with a C6, I loved that car. Rebuilt the motor from the ground up into a GT and it hauled that heavy chassis without breaking a sweat. Originally I thought that the stroke was too long but grew to appreciate how it curved the power band at the (relatively) higher RPM range - FE blocks aren’t famous for their hi revs. Down shifted too hard, punched it and blew the crankshaft right out of the bottom. Took a big chunk of the block with the crankshaft regardless of the “cross bolt” mains. It was a phenomenal failure but I’m still a fan of this engine 👍

  • @charleslum2438

    @charleslum2438

    390 didn't have cross bolted mains. Only later 427s. I've built many Fe engines from 332-428 and have gotten 7000 rpm out of a hydraulic cam 428 with 300 degrees of duration and 520 lift and stock non-adjustable factory rockers. Had 3 holleys from a 406 and it made my 500hp coyote mustang feel sick. 7000rpm big motors make serious power for street use and this thing was in a 68 Falcon. At one time I had a single 850 with f427b intake on it with a 150 shot and although quick it was no match for the 3x2 Holley setup. That setup was king on the street. Built my last Fe last summer at CMS racing engines. Customer wanted solid cam so he bought so cheap roller rockers,all FEs are shaft but these wouldn't line up with the valves correctly being of Chinese origin evidently,it cost him more in the work I had to do in milling,shiming, checking position and clearance than if he had bought good ones to start with. We tried to tell him but he wanted to save money and wound up spending more and got inferior parts. . I think the weakest link in these engines are the stock oil pans and lack of oil volume because they have a starvation problem in during hard acceleration and cornering from oil leaving the pickup. A good pan and these engines are as tough as any and can make obscene power if you know the right combination.
