Building a Zoo Exhibit for our Blue Tree Monitor!

Enjoy this video showing the (mostly) start-to-finish process of building an exhibit in our zoo! We're bummed that we lost a bit of the footage, but I hope you still enjoy seeing a glimpse into what our lives were like when we were taking on this huge project!

I think they should make episodes called the 'lost files' which would have bits and pieces of random footage they have laying around or they discovered again. A series called ' Little Monsters of Discovery' would be nice of footage of the animals getting up to mischief or trouble from any footage. Either from staff videos, guest videos or their videos. As long as someone catches the Discovery critters in the act.

Having worked at a zoo, you will never be done improving, changing, remodeling, or expanding exhibits. It looks beautiful. One idea for a feeder would be to use a half a PVC pipe with caps at the ends. Sand painting or texturing the outside would make it look a little bit more natural, but having white on the inside would let people see what was being eaten and watch his tongue and claws going into the feeder. Keep up the great work!!

  • @kallarae927

She kind of mentioned it in the beginning, basically the blue tree monitor is a more arboreal reptile and this enclosure made more sense for a this monitor than the skinks. Basically either a different enclosure was better for the monkey tailed skinks or they didn’t think the skinks would use the whole enclosure as well as the monitor would! Hope that helps!

This video fast forwarded through all the transformations, MOST of the video was lost. I love nearly all your content and this just, well I was so excited and stayed up to watch it only to feel like I learned/experienced no voyage or journeys worth of information. You didn't even discuss why you decided it was better for Cable than skinks which I didn't know previously I was interested in. Then you gave a long lesson on skinks, I get invested, next thing I know skinks are out and Cable is in sans an explanation or lesson on him personally. Isn't he going to be lonely all by himself? So many questions unanswered, so many processes blatantly skipped over but worst of all I still haven't seen an enclosure build in the zoo from beginning to end more completely than Rex's, and Rex didn't even get her own elaborate video for such.

I haven't watched the full video so correct me if I am wrong but there are a few basic things that appear missing from this enclosure. Just one heat bulb that seems to be just pointed into an open area. Varanids need a bank of bulbs that will heat their entire SVL, those bulbs ideally including at least a halogen or DHP giving off that short wavelength of infra red spectrum that heats through the monitor. The uvb bulbs should also be placed along this basking zone at the optimal height for the correct reading. UV level and surface temps of basking zones are very important. There should be at least one hide box in there , ideally the viv should be full of cork tubes, having nowhere to hide will stress that monitor out as unfortunately not all visitors to a zoo obey the no banging on glass rules aswell as him not being able to get out of the line of sight of all those people. you even say he is a rehome and not friendly he defecates on you showing this, varanids get mega stressed and it will kill them if not helped. Deep humid nest boxes are extremely important for not just females but also males to aid proper shedding and also thermoregulation through heated substrate. In my opinion it is clear you have not done the correct research on this species before showing off poor husbandry to almost 3 million people. Im not trying to 'bash' the channel just would be awesome if you sorted these issues and set the example for correct husbandry to all of your subscribers and zoo visitors
