A couple Hank Green quotes from years past kept poking at me as I listened to this: 1. Maybe 8ish years ago Hank said in a Vlogbrothers video "I don't live in America. I live on the internet." That was such a profound statement to me at the time, and I immediately identified with it. As an adolescent/teen I had little privacy in my life, so I poured my soul into forums and online communities. It was where I could talk about my depression/mental health and explore my queerness. I wouldn't say the internet as a whole was a safe space for me, but there were corners I thank for keeping me afloat when life outside of the internet was too painful. In the last decade, more people have become reliant on the internet at an accelerating rate. It's vitally important to have privacy in life, and when so many of us live online, it is imperative that our data be protected. 2. Hank once made a video in which he said his secret to productivity was putting in 80% effort. I think about this all the time, actually. I think we're all told growing up that as long we put 100% effort into what we do, we have nothing to be ashamed of. I twisted that into "if I don't put 100% effort into something, I deserve any ensuing failure." In high school, I sacrificed sleep, social life, and anything self care to achieve my goals, namely to get into an elite university. I succeeded, but I missed out on so many other opportunities for growth and connection - things that give our goals meaning. I got into one of the country's top colleges but couldn't go because my mental health had deteriorated too much. I reluctantly took a year off from my academic goals to receive treatment, and I grew more in that year than I had in any of my previous 18. Hank's video was the first time I'd heard someone encourage putting anything less than 100% into what you do, and I have actively practiced his principle ever since. I don't let myself stagnate in the name of chasing perfection anymore. I've learned to be proud of imperfection because it has allowed me to accomplish many more things, both what is traditionally seen as productive (eg getting my BA) and what I now know is also productive (eg maintaining mental health and relationships).

I'm an entrepreneur who has moved on to the job market and I can tell you that sometimes big corporations see my experience as a liability. I've been asked in job interviews "how do I know you're not going to leave this company with the good ideas?", "you're not going to start anything again are you?", and "how do I know you don't have some side project and you'll eventually leave?" Creative types are sometimes seen as lose cannons. It's not always that way especially with start ups. They love people who tried to strike out on their own.

Total cost 3200 euros aprox. and in some countries is still free from bachelor to a doctorate degree. This apply even to american students as every year we receive more american students because is cheaper for their parents to pay their rent here and college instead of paying one single year in an american university.

He lives in Missoula, MT, a rapidly expanding university town with low local wages and quickly increasing housing costs with a distinct line between the working class and those who get their money from either the internet, like Hank, or investments. This conversation on stories and the way internet companies shape our narrative is very important. There are still not a lot of subscribers to yangspeaks considering how people really resonated with Yang Messaging and Ubi. Can we have more exploration of the stories that Yang Campaign had that really did light up people and why those worked? As Anand Giridharadas was sharing democrats don't know how to tell stories about ideas that would help everybody - I think the focus on the success of the past Yang Campaign would be very helpful to find storytelling that does work because it is simple. Not everybody has the time or resources to work out how they are manipulated by the social media and internet as Hank was pointing out. We need simple stories that bring us together and resonate - then perhaps we can find ways to have conversation about our differences.

Thank you so much for this. You are both so articulate in your optimistic realism. There are problems. This is what we can do about them is a great attitude. Your words and experience help me make sense and find both meaning and direction in this world.

This pairing! Holy cannoli! Their perspectives compliment each other so well! I sincerely hope they continue to collaborate often. Side note: I’d love to be in the room where they are having an off-line conversation in which they don’t have an obligation to keep a bigger audience apace with everything they’re talking about.

I hope this keeps building for you Andrew. I see many far less informative podcasts getting a much higher 'market share' of the views and I'm wondering as to whether some of it could be suppression against the topics that you raise in this video or if there really are this few logical and well intentioned people seeing your videos. Google knows I love Hank Green and from the other side of the pond my knowledge of you was limited but I always knew you were one of the more informed candidates and it's great to see you putting your intellect into the public forum. I'm not entirely sure how the system works but if you can build this in Rogan fashion, you might have a greater base for the next time you run, if that is something you're considering.

From the first time I heard Andrew Yang speak during The Impact Fellowship, a program for helping bring technology into the fight for social good, I knew that his ideas were hitting on the key issues of our time. It is exciting to see how he continues to spread his message and slowly but surely shift the narrative of what our future can and should look like.

i would say there's no replacement for lived experience particularly in learning, but the classroom is not necessarily the lived experience necessary. any lived learning experience isgood. digital can supplement but lived experience is what's important. Also, thank you Hank and your bother for crashcourse. it may not be the classroom but it is incredibly helpful. it's a great start to go dig into things further.

Throwing this out there; happiness as productivity ... this is a concept that was stolen from us by capitalism. Happiness as productivity is at the heart of building connected communities, and having to look at it this way is the result of all of us having to bend our minds around the commodification of everything we do. If this is how we have to look at it these days to reclaim it for ourselves, so be it, but it really sucks that's the case.

I personally enjoy the mysteries that are left open-ended. I view a book as a two-way conversation. When the author ties everything up in a perfect bow, the book ends on the last page. when the book leaves things open-ended, I get the enjoy the book for months while I think about how the mystery will be resolved in the unwritten future of the story.

It depends on the type of book, certain books enact a sort of unspoken contract between the author and reader about the type of story it is. If you write these types of books and break that contract, you should expect people to be annoyed. for instance, If there's an intricate mystery involved with lots of clues that are being pieced together and at the end you DON'T have some sort of logical explanation that ties up all of the tiny details that I have been using my precious time paying attention to and theorizing about to make predictions I'm going to be pissed off unless you're a VERY gifted writer. (And I might still be pissed, but then just mad and begrudgingly impressed). It's not a strictly definable thing but much like the porn vs art debate in my opinion it's a case of you know it when you see it lol. It's a similar feeling to those tv shows that don't know what they're doing at the start so they just throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and hope it sticks while maintaining the façade of being clever writing then when it comes time to wrap it up they panic and do some stupid twist ending or some vague nonsense that's meant to be spiritual but is really because they never knew where the story was going in the first place.

I really struggle to make the distinction between plastic and the dollar whenever people ask for it, i just hear and see their enthusiasm for plastic. Or for however much of the infrastructure of waste that the dollar is hooked up to. We already produced so much trash that had no way of cycling back into the environment without totaling it, not we have a 4th industrial waste wave on the way.

"Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence." Lu Xun. The roads and properties of the internet exist because we walk on it. Yet, we are governed by the benevolent dictators that own them. So many paradoxes that make me lose hope... Like being good doesn't abstain you from extreme pain, you are paid not based on how hard you worked but how accessible your talents are, essential doesn't equate to value, the valued are oftentimes not essential.

I don't feel it's so much a paradox as a system within systems leading all the way down to physics and quantum mechanics, it just goes to show how complex the structure of the human mind is that we can invest it in ideals and flaws we have created for ourselves over our 250,000 years or so of existence...It's really a wonder we exist at all...given the no mercy attitude of physics and the vastness of things that could outright erase our small blue dot from existence...
