Hello everyone, and welcome back to our spatial analysis series! In this lecture, we're diving into a large model builder project that will guide us through the next few sessions. Our goal? To automate the process of characterizing land parcels based on their proximity to a river, a critical aspect in relocating a town.
This isn't just about moving data-it's about understanding the spatial dynamics involved in such decisions. we start by defining the problem: relocating a town, while ensuring it remains on the same side of the river. We discuss strategies to automate the identification of land parcels on the correct side of the river, ensuring reproducibility and scalability. we delve deeper into Model Builder as we construct the first part of our town relocation toolset.
First, we demonstrate how to copy parcel data for multiple testing runs while preserving the original dataset intact. Using the Copy Features tool, we ensure a clean starting point for our analysis each time. Then, we add a field to mark parcels proximate to the river, setting initial values as placeholders for further analysis. Next, we introduce the Field Calculator tool to assign default values to the newly added field. By establishing these baseline values, we lay the groundwork for subsequent calculations to identify parcels adjacent to the river and those on the correct side.
Second, we’ll identify actual river parcels and update this field with a value of one. To achieve this, we'll create a feature layer from our parcels layer, use the Select Layer by Location tool to identify parcels intersecting the river, and update the 'is river' field for these selected parcels to one.
