Building a small plywood boat based on the Tewantin

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I built this boat in the summer of 2021. It is built from normal construction plywood and epoxy.
Boat specifications:
Design based on the Tewantin by Tim Weston: www.timwestonboats.com/small-...
3,4 m long and 1,5 m wide, final weight is 88 kg.
Around 6 hp is a good motor size and the boat can safely take 3 persons (probably more). It planes with 1 person and my electric motor (ca 5 hp), but with more people in the boat it does not get up on plane with the electric motor.
Materials list:
- 6 mm pine plywood, 4 sheets 1,4 x 2,5 m
- 9 mm spruce plywood, 2 sheets 1,4 x 2,5 m
- About 10 kg of epoxy
- Some glass fibre sheet, 160 g/m²
- Polyurethane paint, 2 liters (1 litre per side of the boat)
- Some planks, screws, etc...
The total material cost was around 1000€.
Overall I am happy with how it turned out, the only problems I see are that:
- It is a bit heavy (I could have used thinner plywood and less wooden details, but the boat would not be as sturdy)
- I should have put one or two layers of fibreglass on the bottom of the hull and the railing to protect it from wear.
As always I am happy to answer questions in the comments :)

    Seeing that huge mold form I knew boat would be big. Then when I saw its shape my thoughts were, love too see smaller boat on same design. An here you are! This build will interest me, because I helped dad male several salmon fishing boats for Willamette River falls. Our boats were just under 16ft, gluing 2 plywood sheets. But we put 20hp mercs an raced. Put a 20hp on that boat! Enjoy!

    Thanks! Yes, a large flat hull and not much weight :) with two people it does not plane as easily

    @@AntonMakesStuff Hi Anton. Thank you for the video! It would be great if you could tell us how does this hull behaves in waves. Dou you get a lot of hull slam when going over other boar wake at speed? I am also impressed by the lack of wake of your boat

  • @FarmerFpv

    @FarmerFpv

    @@michaelf2646 Of course it will. It is a flat bottom hull. Flat bottom hulls don't cut through wakes or waves very well. That is why most Ocean-going hulls have deep Vs or Displacement hulls. The faster ones are Cats but they are still V-shaped hulls on both sides. If you want to go really fast and still have good wave performance, a catamaran is what you want.

    Hi there. The design and your build were great, and thanks for sharing. The boat looks stable with less tendency to roll compared to other designs I have seen. I will study Tim's designs. Cheers.

    When they join large sheets to build the Plywood yatches they dont shamfer the joint ...what they do is they cut a jigsaw puzzel edge join or a flat dove tail keyed edge and bond with epoxy then reinforce the joins with grp. 🧙🏼‍♂️⚓🇬🇧

    I personally would have prefilled the seats with foam to add some ballast to stop boat from sinking.

    You did a fantastic job in its construction. It would have added some weight, but cladding the entire hull in fiberglass will add resilience and stop most of those annoying nicks...

    Hi, I wanted to ask you for advice. In your opinion, what is the maximum number of hp of the engine that I can put on this boat ?

  • @AntonMakesStuff

    @AntonMakesStuff

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello! That is hard to answer. I would say that 6-10 hp is good for this boat. Hard to approximate the speed for higher hp, I would guess around 15-20 knots with 8-10 hp. But it depends of course on how heavily loaded the boat is. If you build a very robust boat it could certainly handle more hp, maybe around 15-20hp, it would be very fast and a bit unsafe :)
