Building a Shelving unit with mdf
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I needed to build some shelves to organise my large collection of dvds i decided to use mdf just because the cost of 3/4 plywood was too expensive for utility shelving.

"It's not the mistakes you make, it's how you cover them up." I feel this to my core my man. I appreciate finding someone else who builds like I do. Trial and error and doesn't sweat their oopsies. :)

Same with cake making lol if u see a odd flower there probably a whole there to cover it up lol
I love how to the point this video is - no sales pitch, no frills, just honest and open about the work. New subscriber for sure!
very few people admit trial and error, well done and looks good
Well done mate, well done! And words to live by: it’s not the mistakes, it’s how you cover them up!

I really like your honesty about the mistakes, makes me feel better about tackling a project like this. Great video, thanks.
LOVED the realism. I have made all these errors myself...
You just built that exactly the way I would. i watched a dozen mdf shelving videos and theres always something the pros fanny about with that make them out of reach of a regular diy er, mailguns, airguns, routers, sealing waxes, but you are the first to concur with me that plasterboard screws are the best for mdf.
I noticed in your DVD collection you have tales of the unexpected. I love that show!!

I've got a load of classics I should stop buying them really lol
I built two shelving units for my front room using a similar design to yours, turned out great (nobody but me knows where the mistakes are!). Great video!
Great video! Love how you speeded the action up then added the voiceover later - makes for a faster watch - so many of these videos are 15, 20, 30 minutes long and I ain't got time, and like Matt said below, good to hear your honesty about the mistakes, makes me want to get stuck in to my shelving project! Cheers!
Me new favourite wood working channel love this guy!
That looks awesome! thank you for your tutorial
Well done you. That’s excellent work. I’m looking at making a small shelving unit for the wardrobe in my caravan.
Thanks for the video! I think I can do this with out too much trouble because my shelf will be shorter and deeper for inside a closet. Your pointers regarding pre drilling etc. are very helpful.
Nice job Paul. I have made quite a few smaller cabinets and cupboards using 1/2” MDF joined with just glue and biscuits no screws and they have been quite rigid. I have biscuit joined lipping on the edges to overcome the painting issue. You can get a biscuit cutter for the router from Trend cutters not too expensive although I bought mine about fifteen years ago. Keep up the good work.
looks great, that 18mm sheet is heavy! I've used it for bookshelves etc, if you are leaving it natural (not painting), I usually seal it with a polyurethane varnish mixed with turps 50/50, for one coat and another coat of Poly applied undiluted, the first coat soaks right into the MDF providing a bit more longevity, and the second coat gives a bit more protection to the surface...Cheers from Fremantle W Australia...
Great job and very helpful. Thanks.
Looks great man..i'll apply this when i finish building my house. Regards from Aruba
Awesome work man!
Wanted to build MDF shelves for my home office. But was worried I didn't have the fancy table saws and mitre saws etc and I am LOUSY at jointing/carpentry .. so I was very pleased to see this and how "simple" it was and it's given me confidence to have a go (and probably make mistakes) myself.
Great job, thanks for the video.
Very nice, thank you for this tutorial 😍
Awesome video . Thank you I have a stack of Mdf and this just really works for me ❤️
Great job, nothing better than custom building something to fit your space.

Great video -- great job! I so appreciate you being "real" -- successes and errors and "golly, wish I'd done it that way instead"... I am a beginning wood worker and I think I learned more from your video that from many more "polished" and "professional" ones (please take that as the compliment it was intended to be!) At any rate...thank you!

Nice video mate.
Great job ..thanks
Good video. how's it coping structurally now? I'm thinking of using MDF versus ply for a build. Also can skip a few steps - no need to glue MDF, no need to countersink as an impact driver will drive screws sub surface creating a flush look. Screws are sufficient (no glue) and a primer like Zinsser Bin shellac based one works well for MDF requiring not as many coats.
Class here from the states I am using real wood, but dig your style and just what I was looking for,.. Cheers

good honest learned a bunch.
Very impressive. Do you make stuff to order or is it just for your own needs?
Made me nervous shouting the nail gun towards you lol . Looks good
Nice video and nice to hear a northern voice. Zinsser do a fantastic primer for MDF, just remeber to sand between coats and use the satin or matt and it looks like glass. screw fix do a great imo mohair roller for that glass finish.

Thanks for this, I'll be doing exactly as you said, zinsser primer and mohair rollers. Any good paint you recommend or does it not matter too much as long as you the sand inbetween coats? I usually just use leyland.

Hi Sharpey I loved this. You're a very straightforward talker and you stick to the subject. Thanks a million. May I ask - how long did it take you to make the cabinet please, excluding time spent painting it. Cheers.
sand and seal with a mix of 1:1 pva and water before painting the MDF, that will stop it absoring the paint as much
Good job

I do love how to make your bookshelf it’s different you should use a router make sure the grills put in a small shelfs make a whole Lotta straighter and neither if you want to go to a different design it’s one of my kind what do you have

@@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP Thanks I'm a she btw lol, I dug out my countersink and practiced on some mdf cutoff , I was worried it may crack my first time with mdf too. I'm making 2 panelled doors. Dieing to get started but the girl at the hardware store ripped my 5 inch trim pieces that were 70 inches long across the bottom of a sheet of MDF on a vertical panel saw. So all the cuts look like an alligator chewed them off, they certainly can't be used as finished edges and I'll be damned if I'm going clean them all up. So I went in to complain and the guy said thats how you are meant to cut it. Lol don't screw with me !! You don't make long thin cuts horizontally along the bottom with all the woods weight on top as you cut (its a vertical panel saw) you cut the strip on the top of the wood. Anyhow people see a girly looking female in heels and think I don't know which way to hold a drill, love proving them wrong and tomorrow I get a new mdf sheet cut correctly free of charge 😀
@Sunnbuzz

I see that they make a drill bit with a countersink built in at the top, no idea of the quality of the drill bits but I wish I knew they existed years ago I love that idea !!
Would you be able to use ply for the same thing?
18mm router groves cut to 5mm would have helped you and made it more rigid
nice, thanks
Nice job. Had any issues with shelves sagging?

Hi Matthew with the supports running down the centre it's been fine
@Dentropolis

He used 18 mm which is 3/4 inch. The shelves appear to be up to 2 ft wide. 3/4 inch is way strong enough not to sag. 5/8 inch might have done ok as well
what size and lenth screws did you use
Thank you for posting this. I enjoyed your straightforward manner. I have just bought a sheet of MDF and you were the first video I found. In the time you have had the shelf have you noticed any sag or give develop?
@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP
5 жыл бұрын
Hi with the supports in the middle of the shelves there's been no sag I have learnt that if you prime the mdf with watered down pva it's easier to paint cheers
Mr Sharpe, what happend to using the router? It would have made the assembly easier surely. That said, cracking job

In a pinch, get a tea towel, put it around your face like a stagecoach robber from 1850’s and clothes peg it at the back.
I never make mistakes because no body is there to witness it.
Surprised the shelves don’t sag. Might be better to use melamine board like closet companies do because they are more rigid, low cost and you don’t need to paint it.

Maverick_is _right_ u dnt know how mdf is strong :)
That looks awesome! Do you reckon MDF would be strong enough to create a floating unit? Just I'd like to have my nail polishes on display (I know, I know... How sad, right? 😂) and don't really want them at floor height but worried about the weight of them on the wood joints. Also I missed what type of screws you were using. (Edit: caught it this time. Drywall screws)
@SHARPEYSWORKSHOP

Hi i think it would be strong enough for a shelf just use plenty of glue and pre dril everything and I did use dry wall screws thay seem to work the best

Arite mate. Why dont you get a Festool DF500 and Festool Tracksaw. Would save ya a few minutes
Maybe paint the mdf before assembly much better finish
What type of screws are you using? I have a big unit I need to put together soon, but was struggling to find the right type. These look like they will help me finish my design!

Wouldn't it have been easier to paint it first before putting it together? You could have assembled it with just screws to make everything fit and then disassemble it to paint it?
