Building a Segmental Arch with Reclaim Imperial Bricks

The gable end wall has had some movement over the years which has caused the existing arch to fail and also produce a crack in the middle or the wall. The installation of two substantial concrete lintels together with chemically fixed Heli-bar to the face and rear of the wall has restored strength to the gable.
The face brickwork was then replaced over the window frame with a new, reclaimed brick segmental arch.

Nice work Rob, I just can't understand why the client didn't have you take down and rebuild the gable. But we just do what they want I suppose

the rest of the gable has been strengthened in a few others ways such as the new blockwork on the inner skin, purlins into the gable and stainless steel straps from the rafters.

What type of line mortar is that Rob? I’m using hydraulic lime nhl 3.5 mixed at 4building, 1/2 grit and 1 lime (not my choice) and it’s really dead. Yours looks well creamy

  • @robsonger1

yes, this is 3.5 as well. The key could be, we mix ours the day before then remix it quickly the next day. Wet up your left over mortar at the end of the day and re-use it the following day, you'll find its better the second time around.

@@robsonger1 yeah I’ve found that it’s better when it’s left over night, we leave one in the mixer but we use loads as we are building a garage🤪👍 thank you for replying Rob

@@craigstyrin3453 It's recommended to leave it a minimum of twenty minutes or more then remix it, it gives the lime time to do it's thing. You get a nice creamy mix then, you might need to add some more water to the mix on the second go, you'll tell the difference.
