That's a neat trick putting it in the drill to sand it. Great video,

I've been working on an 1830's double barrel and god it's in horrible shape and my father's convinced it won't shoot again but it's such a simple firearm I'm certain with enough time & money I can get it workin, a missing ramrod is one of the first problems

I cut some privit shoots and dried them and sanded it down to make my ramrod. I think i did a video on it

Don't know if ya did already, but heat treat the entire rod may help harden it. At least that's what I think I read for making arrows as well. If that breaks try a oak or maple sapling . Good luck . God bless

Well, here I go again. Don't think I believe I know everything, but I did .earn something from you about using the drill to smooth things out and round them. I'll give you a hint. I had an uncle who never used a store bought axe handle. He'd take the straight grained white wood from a Hickory. He'd split it out, rough out the shape of the handle with a sharp axe, then with rasp, pocket knife, and glass shards He'd work out the smoothest handle you ever saw, except for the one chop mark He'd leave at the bottom of the handle so you could tell it was home made. You could stick the axe in a wood block and twist the handle to a 45 degree angle. You could wear them out but you weren't going to break them. Now why couldn't you do the same thing with a ramrod, then you'd never have to worry about breaking another one? Just a thought.

My reason is the amount of work. But i agree it can be done and would make a better ramrod

Brother If you're gun gets damp or wet that ramrod will stick up inside there and it is a booger to get out I just did it on my 36 caliber mountain rifle and Buffalo and I had to drive it in and break it off piece by piece because I could not pull it out

I sealed it with animal oil. Its not gonna swell. I made the last one and it rode in the canoe in the rain and worked

Not traditional but I seen them made of aluminum rod . I'd want a wooden on my flint lock too. Wonder how locust wood work ? It gets very hard and doesn't splinter in bigger pieces not sure about ramrod size?

In my area it's almost impossible to find black powder. You find substitute types but no good for priming the pan in my trials.

It looks like you have really good wrist action there. You ought to try the reverse grip and see if the ram rod shaft feels different.
