Building a Quinzhee - Time Lapse!

Ойын-сауық

The kids and I make a traditional Quinzhee in the backyard. A quinzhee is a large, hollowed-out pile of snow and can be a great survival shelter in an emergency. It's also a great fort for the kids!
To make a quinzhee:
1) Make a large pile of snow (approximately 7ft diameter and 6 feet tall).
2) Allow the pile to harden (sinter).
3) Dig it out, leaving the walls about 12" thick in all areas.
Safety notes:
1) Make sure to have a helper or others near by in case of a collapse while digging it out.
2) As you dig it out, make sure to focus on removing snow from the roof first (as opposed to digging a tunnel) so that if it does collapse, there is less weight falling on you.
This was our first time making a quinzhee and there are some definite flaws with this one. If we were to actually use it to sleep in, I would make the following changes for next time:
1) Bigger. This one was only big enough for the kids to play in or for me alone kneeling or laying.
2) Smaller opening / door to prevent as much wind from entering and heat loss.
3) A higher sleeping platform. We pretty much dug out the entire floor to make as much space inside as possible. Next time, we would leave a higher sleeping platform with a lower area in front of the door to allow cold air to settle.

Thanks Andrew! We’ve built one a couple of winters in a row now. The kids love it.
