Building a Pneumatic Press : a DIY Replacement for a Toggle Press

Ғылым және технология

After using a manual toggle press to press fit thousands of bearings, I decided it was time to switch to something a little more automated. I put together a pneumatic press with a few aluminum plates, a cylinder, valve, and some hardware and it's working great so far.
The original Schmidt toggle press was a model 17R.
Here are the parts used in the build:
McMaster Carr Part Numbers and Descriptions:
91423A220 Fine-Thread Medium-Strength Steel Hex Nut Class 8, M18 x 1.50 mm Thread
98861A100 Low-Strength Steel Threaded Rod M12 x 1.75 mm Thread Size, 1 M Long
98861A120 Low-Strength Steel Threaded Rod M16 x 2 mm Thread Size, 1 M Long
90591A220 Zinc-Plated Steel Hex Nut Medium-Strength, Class 8, M16 x 2 mm Thread
91166A310 Zinc-Plated Steel Washer for M16 Screw Size, 17 mm ID, 30 mm OD
Spring Return Hand Valve from HQC-Tools.com
5/2 Way Hand Pull Valve with Spring Return, 1/4″ NPT 4H210-08S
Pneumatic Components from AutomationDirect.com
PU8MBLU100 NITRA pneumatic tubing, 8mm outside diameter
MS516-14N NITRA pneumatic push-to-connect fitting, male, 5/16in (8mm) tube to 1/4in NPT
SBC-18N Exhaust Silencers (I used some Festo Silencers I had on hand, not these)
UY8M NITRA pneumatic push-to-connect fitting, union Y 5/16(8mm)
FVR8M-38G Flow Controls (I used Festo again which are expensive). If you use the meter-out version you only need one of these on the lower port and can use 3/8 BSPP/G quick connect fittings for the upper two ports).
Two Stage 100mm bore Cylinder from Aliexpress ( www.aliexpress.com/item/40000... )
Model should be SDAT 100x25x0 for $112+.

That was a very well made video. I just thought of using pneumatics today, knowing nothing, and your video changed all that. Thank you sooooo much.

I wonder how that cylinder would work as a cutting ring press for tubes, i might have to get a few of these and build a couple of cutting ring presses for work after i do some calculations :) Thank you so much for this video!

Great video and idea ! I want to make a similar machine for pressing hangers onto the MDF backs of pictures because like yourself hundreds or thousands of these really get to your shoulder ! The pneumatic ram you have used might be overkill for my job but I guess the pressure/power can be adjusted via a pressure regulator . What do you think Thanks

Nice project!! I should have thought of that before I spent $4k on a compound arbor press........

Thanks, if it's the same setup over and over, this makes a lot of sense. Not a bad thing to have a nice big manual press around anyway though.

The press looks great. Very nice design. How much force are you getting?

Beautiful work! I'm trying to build something similar. Mind if I ask why did you decide to use a 2-stage cylinder? Thanks

How do you calculate the force exerted? i'm a little new, I want to make a press too for laminating wood. Keeping it for hours.

i am making a lost cost automation press to press a lock ring in the tyre and rim. i am using 4 160mm bore cylinders at 90 degree angle having 100mm stroke i need more 150 mm length extension on piston rod. Do you have any suggestions for the kind of dolly i should use?

Can you provide the part numbers for the toggle and where you also purchased the tubing? Love this build. I was wondering if I could modify a press I have now. Also whats the tonnage of the cylinder-thanks!

I added part numbers for everything to the video description. Almost everything was purchased from McMaster-Carr, Automation Direct, and HQC-Tools.

if you were to automate the process how would you go about it ?.... (like instead of manually loading the part and placing the bearings)

The stroke is short so it doesn't require much air. I use a Husky 30 gal compressor and it only comes on every 100-200 or so strokes.
