Building A Pair of Speaker Stands in Oak and Grenadilla

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I build a pair of loudspeaker stands. A custom set for an old pair of Rogers DB101 shelf/monitor speakers. Looping oak frame like most of my designs, with a curved front support leg complimenting the speaker shape. Inlayed with - and with joinery details in - African Blackwood also known as Grenadilla .
A number of processes were involved in making these. - probably more than this humble little speaker deserves - including some turning, inlays, steam bending, the usual joinery and even a bit of casting dyed concrete.
A long video for me but I hope you find it interesting.
It's an odd thing but as well as reaching for the long curved front leg, followed by "ooh", people always poke at the concrete in the base asking what it is. Concrete hidden in plain sight!
And the main thing, they've really bought these little Rogers speakers to life. Bass is tight and present with lots of detail everywhere else, especially stereo imaging.
Very happy with them. Would love to know your thoughts below.

    Interestingly, those speakers have seen quite a life in the last twenty years. Crafting those stands in that way for those speakers says a great deal about the philosophy behind it. Really, really impressed and warmed by how that all worked out ☺️

    Cheers John. After a bit more thought, figured out I bought the Rogers in autumn '99. Seen a fair bit of action and still bangin. Stands turn them into a proper piece of furniture plus, positioned as they are, sound better than ever partnered with the NAD. 👌

    Utterly beautiful and functional too ... thought you would be a Linn Sondek man though ! Not many of us left that sit down and appreciate the detail a well thought out HiFi can give you. Great video as always.

    Thank you Chris! I think I'd be in trouble forking out for a Linn Sondek. Did bid on a Linn tone arm recently funny enough. Just a stopgap turntable at the mo. I've pretty much decided I'm getting a NAD C588 turntable. Already got a Nagaoka MP110 cartridge from Japan waiting for the upgrade. 😁 I'll try and stop there though. Can get a bit out of hand the ol' hifi game. I get a lot if pleasure out of just listening these days though. All the best.

    I'd struggle to think of another channel that could pull off sculptural woodworking, steam bent inlays, concrete casting and a hand operated CNC in one 20 minute video.... Wow!... Do you know if John Heisz watches your channel? I'm sure he'd enjoy this

    What a superb project, the speakers look very cool on their stands, great to hear they now please your discerning ear! 👍😀. This has reminded me I have some good B&W monitors packed away, next year I’ll endeavour to treat them to some stands, thanks for the inspiration 👏😀

    Great as always. They look fantastic. Why did you use the jigsaw upside down when rough cutting instead of the bandsaw?

  • @BischBaschBosch

    @BischBaschBosch

    2 жыл бұрын

    Cheers Tom. Couple reasons really. Room being the first. Was a 1.8m plank in that shot and with kit set up for other jobs on the go, I couldn't get it to the mitre or bandsaw to break down. The other reason is I broke my thin bandsaw blade recently. Scrolling with the current blade in it is a nightmare. The jigsaw got me out of the fix. The stiff Cunex blade in the Mafell is pretty ideal for tight scrolls thankfully.

    Mate what job! Nice It did strike me when you were bending the wood the irony that we normally always look for straight bits or spend time flattening it! Interesting technique though. What was the finish please? I like the not fished look too

  • @BischBaschBosch

    @BischBaschBosch

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Doug mate. True enough. The finish is Bona Mega Natural. It's for floors really but hard wearing and as close I've found to an "invisible" finish. No yellowing etc. Not food safe though but ideal for chairs and such. I use Osmo matt/natural for surfaces I need food safe. It's fairly neutral too. 👍
