Building a MASSIVE Custom University Campus in Cities Skylines 2 | MC #7

Ойындар

Magnolia County is constantly moving from one metaphorical fire to the next! This time, there is a HUGE shortage of educated workers, and it's stifling the productivity of all of the businesses in the county. Pressure is building on state leaders - particular Governor Sheila Johnson - to do something about it.
Governor Johnson - a skilled, but conflicted politician - applies pressure where it's needed and brings a university to Magnolia County.
In this episode, we'll be build this university, but rather then just plopping a building, we'll attempt to build a MASSIVE campus. We'll also build a few residential suburban neighborhoods, all the city services that the area could need, and quadruple the number of parks in the county.
This is the biggest build in the series yet. Enjoy!

In the UK a lot of campus universities outside cities are built around old stately homes and country houses that were originally owned by the people who founded the university. Maybe the college building is the old house owned by the founder that has been transformed into a law school as the university has been built up around it.

It’s also quite common to have several different campuses belonging to one uni, particularly if it is a city university or one which has undergone significant expansion, eg, Bristol for the former, or Gloucestershire (which is based in two nearby towns). Both incorporate some significantly old historic buildings. My old uni has 5 campuses.

I know it's well beyond when this video was posted, but thought I'd give an explanation that maybe works a bit better in a US historical context: Throughout the 19th century, there were a number of massive land grants for the purposes of building colleges and universities, and this could very well have been one, which would account for the older architectural style. Ofc it doesn't necessarily make sense in such a rural area, but I could see a reality in which such an institution was founded in an ill-fated attempt to bring education to a rural community that simply didn't have the resources to support it, and is only now being revitalized by the arrival of all these new people. It's also possible there used to some larger settlement here that was eventually abandoned, which would further justify the existence of such an old school in the region.

The fact that roughly 1/8th of Magnolia County's population comes from the university really does make this feel like a small college town.

Presumably, Johnson Aggregates funded the building of the Geologic Research Institute (rather than a geography institute), probably even partially endowing its ongoing activities. The Governor probably conditioned the bequest on the naming of the Institute after her grandfather who founded the company, so it would be the Johnson Geologic Research Institute. Its graduates would have a variety of internships at Johnson Aggregates, with excellent career opportunities after graduation.

I think adding a campus shuttle bus to get from one area of the university to the other would be great. Walkability and bikeability are fantastic, but a shuttle would add some accessibility for folks who have mobility issues, especially in the Superior winters. Also, I like having the elementary school on campus. I could see it being a magnet/charter school where kids come and are taught in some sort of specialized subjects while also allowing education students at the university to gain experience.

Realistically, you need some commercial and office space surrounding or near the university campus. Also include a transit station or passenger rail station nearby for students and faculty in other parts of the county. The waterfront area near the farms could also be a destination spot such as a boardwalk with restaurants and shops turning it into a great escape for the university area.

Really loving the series! One piece of feedback on the university neighborhood: there should be corner stores. The pedestrian-orientated strip of shops is great but for people on the far end of the neighborhood that would be a 30-45 + minute walk. Fixing this could also be a great place to discuss the decline of neighborhood shops in NA. For as long as history humans have been selling goods out of their domicile, but in recent decades governments have been restricting the ease of setting up businesses' in single-family neighborhoods.

not to mention, when the internet was first created it was funded by the american department of defense and used by research insititutions (mainly universities) and certain other organisations who had contracts with the department of defense. Pretty much the only places that even had room for the size of computers back then were universities, so it makes a whole bunch of sense that they would have repurposed the space used to house the original computers into a server farm at some point! Anyone who has never played these games before can see how much heart you put into your videos and with each upload I'm blown away. I love how you lay out your videos and how every episode has the most perfect transition between segments and accompanying soundtrack. Thank you for your time and dedication to the platform and community. Have a great holiday season!

A great idea would be to add some row homes, maybe as you increase the population of Magnolia County, to act as some off-campus housing for students. Maybe later down the line when public transit buses to the university are added, or a train station. Lots of colleges have a ton of public transit options for commuting students, and row-housing off campus apartments for students are common in universities near highly-dense cities, for example, Iona College near New York. Just some thoughts :)

As for the clashing college and uni aesthetics I think I can speak on this! I go to a Canadian university and this is actually very common in my area, the original university is an older more traditional campus with some really old brick and mortar buildings but as it’s expanded out, it’s become more modern looking. In fact the old engineering office wing is located directly beside a large sky scraper looking tower with full wall glazing. There are a few colleges scattered around the area not far from the university that are also very old and almost Victorian. The area that I live was actually an old Scottish settlement so I think there’s a lot of European influence especially for the architecture of the vocational college near the newer university! I think it’s a cool opportunity to use the college as a historical contrast to the quickly developing county, maybe it’s a memorial campus for one of the original trail blazers in Magnolia

My university is pretty similar too! It's about 120 years old and the oldest buildings are very traditional. Right next door you have 40s-50s brick, 60s-70s brutalist, and across the highway you have modern sandstone. Even the newer buildings meant to mimic the look of the older buildings on the quad are still obviously modern in comparison. It's honestly rather eclectic and helps add to the character and story of the university, so I think it's pretty realistic here.

Can I say... I loved this Magnolia County series and can't wait to see how this city grows! I have a few suggestions for you though, feel free to use the ones you like the most. 1. Placing a medical university around the campus, to boost healthcare across the area. 2. Keep an eye on potential high school upgrades, otherwise college and university buildings could struggle with a lack of students. 3. Connecting a bus line from the county's train station to the campus. 4. Placing a public train station near the campus, to allow more transport options to the university. 5. Bike lanes in the county, especially on some roads around the city. 6. Use development points for police headquarters, fire station, and hospital.

Great episode! I noticed that the central plaza in front of the main building would almost definitely have desire paths form as students cut through the grassy area in the middle to get to adjacent buildings on a straighter path. Perhaps you could add some diagonal paths in the corners to keep the grass from being trampled PS. The university I used to go to had a campus that used to be a military training camp until a few decades ago. The barracks were converted to administrative buildings, smaller buildings with a couple classrooms or offices for startups sponsored by the university, and the largest one was made into a secondary building for the law faculty. There was also a lot of unused space, so they built several larger buildings for some of the faculties that outgrew the main campus (CS being the main one), a library, a massive dormitory and a park. As a result, you get some very old classicist buildings next to very modern ones.

One thing that could be a cool project for this build now we have a university: Something like the "High Tech Campus" in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I visited there earlier this year for my job in the UK. It's a business park with office spaces that companies can rent. several large tech companies in the Netherlands need extra office space as their own HQ campuses are now too full. But the area itself was more like a forest getaway retreat. Trees everywhere, small lakes, it was incredible. The car parks/parking lots were covered in greenery. Now Magnolia County has a university it may attract big tech companies and workers for those jobs will want pretty work environments :)

As a former agriculture student, super happy to see the student farm! I’d love to see some sort of off-campus student housing and “campustown” area for students to have commercial spaces (&bars). Iowa State University has a great example of this near the main campus.

My campus sort of has a mixed-use area where there's a low-rise building with a dining hall, coffee shop, and a few offices next to a 5-over-1-esque building that has apartments (both standard, with individual kitchens, and dorm-like, with communal kitchens) over a hair salon, post office, gift shop, another dining facility, and a convenience store, so there's possibly a situation where you could use the mixed use zoning. I also like using office zoning as the low-rise general-purpose campus buildings that have random classrooms and office spaces, and commercial for standalone dining halls.

I recently got into this game so of course I’m getting videos recommended. I just spent an entire Sunday watching the first few videos of this series and the time flew by. I feel like I’m watching an actual story of a town being built. The detail, the logic, the explanation of zoning, everything is top notch.

There is something about making a city and writing a story around it. I had a random street corner which I had a dog park which gad two NPC stuck on. Made a whole story up how the guy was proposing to his girlfriend and I made area up as much as I could for a wedding! Going around my city and adding little story lines

The college elementary school, I would rename it as a, "college daycare" building. Sine colleges will provide daycare for their students, it would be logical that elementary school. Your governors name should be part of that daycare to get votes too.

This is so neat of an idea. I tried some similar basing my university off of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and I made another medical campus based off of CU Denver Anschutz medical campus. The UCCS campus was very difficult because they built it into the side of a mess. So, I had to learn to make the topography respect me.

All I could think of while watching this was how similar to Michigan Technological University this is. Not just the fact that it's in Superior, but also just the geographic location is spot on. Right next to a river, across from it is a mining town, built on a hill, and a Tech collage. Just thought you should know the similarities are striking! Might be able to call them the White Tail's, cause Wildcat's and Huskey's are already taken by IRL UP colleges lmao *At MTU, the oldest building on campus is actually one of the Dorms and the ROTC building. Being from before it was a Tech school. So that could be the explanation as to what the Collage is.

Great episode! I really liked the abundance of pedestrian paths - it’s often overlooked by many who focus solely on creating roads for vehicles. Also, I’d like to point out that having only 4-5 commercial spots seems a bit scarce for such an area. I’d suggest adding more. Additionally, wouldn’t it be great to connect the university area with the other side of the riverbank? Or perhaps create a promenade where students can stroll and relax.

Great video. One of my favourites of the series Two things: - Isn’t it a bit odd to have an elementary school on campus? Maybe it would make more sense to put in that neighbourhood for professors (would be another draw for the neighbourhood) - maybe instead of a farm right next to the beautiful river, wouldn’t it be more picturesque and indeed realistic to build a big and beautiful park where students hang out?

But as always you turned obstacles into assets. The campus looks amazing! It honestly feels better than anything that was possible before!
