    I've built many amps.... lots of them on my KZread channel. Sometimes you make an oops... sometimes the kit designers didn't leave satisfactory space... STUFF HAPPENS. Good on you.

    2 things: 1) Love this kind of content! 2) Love the honesty when things don't go perfectly... you could have easily edited that to make it look like it was easy or flawless, but saying you checked other builds, soldering to the wrong terminal, and even knowing the flood potential all make this very helpful. Thanks for that humble attitude... makes things more approachable and even encourages a little stretching.

    1+ I’m an aspiring tech and mainly do rebuilds and repairs but I’m getting ready to start building and I’m glad there are people out there that are just real, none of that “guru” attitude that some people have where they pretty much say “even if you did what I just did, I do it better and I’m not going to tell you anything because it’s my way.” While I agree that my own trial and error taught me a lot, I hate this gatekeeping mentality some people have. We should be sharing our finds and helping each other. Great to see referencing other builds and even the mess up. I really enjoyed the video and reading the comments. It really inspires me to see more people interested in the hardware that they play.

    I really appreciate these amp build videos, they're very helpful in showing that with little experience you can build one of these from a kit. I have basic knowledge on how an amp works in theory and I can look at a schematic and know roughly what's going on but I've always been very apprehensive about taking the dive into a kit. Thank you for documenting your experience and showing that it's possible even for someone like me with limited knowledge and no experience :)

    @@MichaelWWestbrook I look forward to seeing it! I definitely plan on taking my time and triple checking everything. Maybe even doing one section of the amp at a time then taking a break, power supply, heaters, preamp, etc. Just break it down into groups and take it one at a time. I'm thinking of getting the Mojotone JMP 2204 kit as well which probably isn't the best kit for a first build but I really want a full sized Marshall

    I’ve found the bigger amps are more complicated in some ways and more simple in others. Tweed Champs or Deluxe’s are simple but space is tight. More room in the chassis is easier to work with for sure.

    I grew up in GA - that flooding in the basement brought back memories of my dad’s workshop in the basement. I also test each component before it’s soldered in. It’s so much easier to find a bad component before it’s installed. There are low cost capacitor meters on Amazon. I even check all components on pedal builds too. Your music sounds FANTASTIC!!!

    My first tube amp build was a kit from a local UK supplier - a 5F1 4W single-ended Tweed clone, which was super easy and fun to assemble. This video has been a real education as to how amp builds should be done. Bravo! Very impressed with the build - extremely tidy wiring runs. I've seen some horrendous kit-build videos and it makes me wonder how anyone could fault-find and set up an amp properly like that. You've got me wanting to build a TMB now. Dang it!

    @@MichaelWWestbrook Thanks for the kind words back Michael. I have an OSD style amp that is a prototype from a small amp company that I had a peripheral involvement with about 12 years ago. That’s a really cool circuit and, as you will likely know, definitely has its own sound. I bet the Trinity version is amazing. If you’re interested, I’ll be releasing a couple of “Tweaking” videos on the next two Fridays. I’ll be going through trouble-shooting the self-oscillation issues I had with the overdrive on the Triwatt and calibrating the effects loop for lowest noise. I’m still planning on doing a more in-depth “Features Review” with better quality audio sometime in the next month as well.

Ive been playing 45 years and have owned and gigged just about every decent valve amp there is. If you can source a good kit and have some patience and can solder? You'll be hard pressed to find a mass produced amp as good. I built my first amp out of curiosity and now I'm totally convinced that hand wired is the king of tone.

    Hey Michael -- curious what you've thought of Trinity's instructions... I am currently building the Tramp model, and I found that there are numerous discrepancies within the instructions (photos not matching text), and the provided layout diagram, as well as some parts list changes that don't match what is in the instructions. Seems like the versions of these docs are not up-to-date with one another, leading to a lot of confusion. This is my 4th build (1st with Trinity), and the first time I've encountered these types of "guesswork". Fortunately, I found that contacting them results in very good support and help, but wondering if you had any similar issues of things that don't match up. It might just be that this particular kit hasn't received as much updating as the others have. Thanks for your insights!

  • @MichaelWWestbrook

    @MichaelWWestbrook

    I have experienced the same. I emailed with Stephen about cleaning up the 18 watt build documents because there was a lot of stuff there that wasn’t applicable to the 6v6 version. I think what happens is as the kit evolves the instructions don’t always follow. In the end for me it made me have to dig a little deeper and understand it more to make sure things were right. Not ideal for everyone and had me scratching my head a couple of times. That being said, Trinity is known to be super responsive over email and the forum provides great info and support as well.

    not to be a smart ass... but you need a sump pump , so if there is another basement flood ... its ready to protect the basement ... right. also you could look into why water is getting in and slop the ground. kind of important... what if the deluxe was on the ground and got soaked... oh that would hurt... and do you have a carbon monoxide / fire alarm in the basement... a little safety goes a long way... after all you seem meticulous building amps... why not spend some attention on safety... love your videos... I think I saw a 15K tail resistor, unless it’s like that because of the 6V6’s, it’s a mistake. Stock Marshall everything is 10K. Anything between a 6.8k and 27k will usually work. 6.8k to 7.5k give the best gain balance from the inverter, anything higher drives one of the output tubes harder than the other, inducing asymmetrical distortion. Check out this link to see what the changes will do www.ampbooks.com/mobile/amplifier-calculators/long-tailed-pair/calculator/

    If you think building a killer sounding amplifier is just simply following a schematic and soldering it together... you're in for a nasty surprise; oscillation, parasitic noise, phase relations, etc. etc. etc. are but the beginning of things to consider and deal with when designing and/or building an amplifier. I get a kick out of all these noobs who think they're Ken Fischer 🤣

  • @MichaelWWestbrook

    I’ll have to respectfully disagree. I’ve now built 2 killer amps and don’t know the first thing about designing one from scratch. I’ve simply followed a well designed layout (from a trusted company) with a foundational knowledge of tube amp safety and good practices. I’ll be the first to tell you I’m no expert but I’ve been able to build 2 wonderful amps and learn a ton in the process.

Obviously I’m not doing it for the money because the 10’s of dollars I’ve made on this won’t pay a single one of my bills but every bit helps. I’d love to not have ads but other wise not sure I can justify providing free content.
