Building a lightweight Les Paul style guitar. Ep 2: Making the neck

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was asked to make a lightweight Les Paul style guitar for a customer. Ep 1 shows the making of the body. This episode shows the making of the neck. Ep 3 shows the staining of the flamed maple top, finishing and spraying the guitar and then final assembly.

Stunning, absolutely stunning. And to use the one and only adjective in the American dictionary, awesome.

Every stroke you make is mindful. Rock steady. A joy to watch. There is such beautiful harmony between your hands, the tools, and the art it produces.

I had so much joy watching this. You're an absolute master luthier. If you ever want an apprentice, send me a message. I'm a 40 year old software engineer from Germany and I'd love to build guitars after my retirement. :)

Looks great 😀👍 But I have to admit: I've tried lighter guitars, and I'm always coming back to the heavier ones... One of my favourites is an Aria Pro-II PE60 from 1982, and it weighs a *LOT* 🤣 Sounds like that too... Same with my other Aria Pro-II models: EX(plorer shape, absolutely gorgeous) and a ST1512 doubleneck! The heaviest Les Paul I own is a non-weightrelief Alex Lifeson signature model, and thát one roars... My point is: unless you have a bad back (in which case I also deeply sympathise with you! 🙏) then don't get too hung up about the weight.... When a guitar plays and sounds great, bit it's on the heavy side: get yourself a really nice, wide, padded strap, and enjoy that beast 😎🤘

One more question: How do you decide between having the scarf joint under the fret board vs. under the headstock face plate? Thanks. I'm about to embark on my first home-made LP..

Nice video. It seems like you are using a router bit with bearing on top to copy the jig 5:26. I am unable to find such a bit for a Dremel. Where did you buy this router bit?

How install the binding on the Body and Fingerboard ?

Don’t know why but I really dislike scarf joints. I know that theoretically, it solves some issues and is most likely stronger than how Gibson does it. I’m just either too much of a purist or just too picky. That being said….phenomenal guitar, beautiful. I’d LOVE to have something like this.

When did you attach the binding?? Missed that step. Did you make the fret board narrower by the total width of the binding, cut the fret slots, and then glue the binding to the sides? Thx

Interesting to see it was done this way. I would love to see more of the steps that we didn't get to see in this video! The guitar looks fantastic.
