People don't use skylights as windows because they are not designed to be used upright. The seal between the pains of glass has not been tested to be used upright. Used flat (slight pitch) as intended the outer frame over laps so that when it rains it runs off freely and doesn't contact the seal. If used upright water could potentially make its way passed the seals in-between the pains wich cause them to blow or even crack if too cold due to expansion caused by ice. I would recommend a shit tonne of ct1 sealer if you intend to use these the way you are. Also the thermal resistance of a flat roof window is a lot lower than your standard double glazed window unless you have purchased the tripple glazed skylights.

People might not use those sky lights as windows cos you can’t open them

The problem with using skylights for windows is that in case of fire, they would not be emergency exits. Here, in America, that would not pass code inspections for that reason, and possibly why nobody else is using them as windows.

But could install a little pointed hammer on the sill, as they do on trains. In the event of having to escape, break the glass with the pointed hammer and the glass does the job it is designed to do: fall out in thousands of blunt dice. I wouldn't want to walk on it with bare feet (I got a cut from a piece) but you would be able to climb out safely and quickly.

We have all heard Chris say how much he enjoys being frugal. The prospect of breaking an expensive skylight would be crushing. No pun intended.

Some run two layers of 2/1 battens to allow better ventilation, also might need two if depending on horizontal or vertical external cladding. Great video! Not having space on site and moving stuff 10 times is such a pain!

Usually because some things that he says can quite easily be proven wrong with a quick google and use of a calculator. Other times people with experience in what he talks about can point out the flaws in what he is saying. Another reason could be that people are getting sick of KZread shills and ‘self help’ KZreadrs popping up to make money out of others by lying and misleading people and warping reality. Usually they begin with a series of videos to get others on board and create a following which then turns into a patreon, selling something or in this case a paid for newsletter. If the information is honest and helpful this isn’t a issue as people should be paid for their expertise, however, it’s seems to be more and more obvious with each video that a lot of what is said here is not entirely accurate or true. His past timeline is consistently blurry and doesn’t make sense. Basic questions are never answered in regard to age and working as an investment banker. Lastly his mathematics rarely make sense when we stop to think about what was just said.

a skylight installed on a wall, it seems to me, should be fine as long as it's installed properly; it is a bit more protected from rain & snow than it would be on the roof. here in the US, we have egress requirements for windows in any room where people could be sleeping, so I'm guessing that some of the skylights must open (unless your exterior door is in the same "room" as your bed); if they open, it might be worthwhile to test how your angling affects their operation

Not normally the case in UK as long as the furthest point is within the acceptable distance to the exit (which I think is 7.5m off the topof my head (?) ) as he's at ground level - the house is only 10m long with a door in the middle so its less than 5m

Fun build. I’d think double glazed units would be cheaper than a skylight. Skylights don’t open, you’ll need windows. What else saves money.. is some planning before you build.
