Last year I got an invitation for a 5 day course at Crimson guitars as a prize for winning The Great Guitar Build Off 2021 competition. I had to wait for a while to save some money for the trip and accommodation. Thankfully guys at Crimson didn’t have a problem with it and I booked my course in May 2022.
Their 5 day course is designed to build a complete guitar from scratch but they have some limitations because of a short time period. In order to complete the full build in such time it need to be simple with not a lot of details. I have a little bit of experiences with the basics of guitar building and I have most of the tools needed. I didn’t want to make just s basic copy of Telecaster or Strat guitar so I wrote to Crimson guitars asking if it’s ok with them that I start building my guitar at home, prepare the base and then finish the build with them. They were very understanding and agreed with my idea.
So this is how it went.
Shout out to my mentors from Crimson guitars, Shean and Josh.

I love that body shape. Really impressed that you got the veneer onto the flat of the headstock and into the scoop. I did that once but I inset the veneer so that fretboard end of it terminated where the fretboard and the neck wood meet. I think it's a bit tidier looking, but a bit trickier. I wouldn't have gone for wooden knobs, but they are beautiful. It always seems like luthiers make wooden control knobs oversized for some reason lol

Thanks man. Inknow what you mean. That's how people usually do it. Did it myself a few times. It's not that hard if you glue the veneer before gluing the fretboard. I like bigger knobs:) It's more comfortable to turn in my opinion.
Even though I was there to watch this amazing instrument being made, I missed all of the detail on how you did it. Every time I turned around it was just a little bit more finished lol. Great to watch this !

Man, I wish I played, as that's such an absolutely beautiful guitar. Saw the Olive wood come out and was like WTH, he's using my fav wood this is going to be great and you did not disappoint, although I would have oiled the olive to help pop the light from dark grain even more before putting on the top finish, other than that AMAZING!!

You must have been going fast to do this on a 5-day course. Most people do a Tele (ie no multi-laminated neck, no body sculpting) for the 5-day. I've just done a strat-style on the 10-day course and I know how to handle routers etc. and haven't done anything fancy. I think, for most people, they would struggle with this achievement in 5-days. Well done for completing this.
@MagicAtticGuitars

I'm not that fast:) I did another 5 days at home beforehand. I wanted to be something a little bit more special an 5 day course just wasn't enough time. Thanks David!

@@MagicAtticGuitars I plan on it. Its still quite a bit different than what you built, especially in the construction plan, but the shape is very similar. Its that cut away on the top mostly! The cut in my drawing is a bit more pronounced, but its the tele style bout with the small cut at the neck, and the fact that its slightly an offset design. My lower cut curves down, a bit like a Warwick bass lower cut, but other than that its kinda uncanny!
Great video and gorgeous guitar. I’m curious, you seem quite skilled, what made you want to take a course?

Thanks man. That's a good question. I did learn few things. I do with every guitar I build. For me it was really nice to be with people who share the same passion. I don't have this at home. And it was nice trying out some new tools. So I came back craving for mirka sander and drum sander 😆

Thanks. String trees are not neccessary for the 3x3 tuners position. And it has a truss rod.
@matthewearl9824
Жыл бұрын
@@MagicAtticGuitars Your headstock does not have a slant. It is straight inline with the neck with a drop. The strings are angled on to the tuning pegs. Aren't they supposed to be straight? I know there needs to be a break and it usually isn’t required on a slanted headstock. Isn't that the whole point of string trees and why they are used mostly on the farther pegs of a 6 inline? I'm just curious. I have never seen such a sharp angle from nut to tuning peg. All the pull pressure is on the top of the tuning peg as it seems the strings have been pulled to the top. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about but I am seriously curious. Making guitars looks fun but requires many tools it seems.
That’s a beauty, nice job. Question- how did you find your Crimson experience? I’m considering doing the five day course also. Is it good value for money?
@MagicAtticGuitars
Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. It depends... Do you have any previous experience in guitar building? I got the course as a prize for winning the GGBO competition. My goal was to meet some people who share the same passion and I had a really nice time. I would say if you already know how to build a basic guitar, 5 day course will not give you much.

@@444chains I would say just give it a try. It is not so hard, especially if jou already know woodworking. You can do almost everything with basic woodworking tools. Only fretboard requires some dedicated tools. I ordered a premade fretboard for my first build. And now I'm offering custom premade fretboards on my website. So if you will need any help with that you can find me on magicatticguitars.com
