Building a full scale flying Delorean Part 1: Making the bodywork
Ғылым және технология
This is the first part of the full scale flying Delorean project where I make the complete bodywork out of EPS foam with the help of my ABB IRB6400 robot.
After I got my robot to work again (see video here: • Turning a broken 2 ton... ) I was looking for a first project i could make with it. At first I thought about building a type of sports car (maybe tesla roadster or similar) but then saw the "Back To The Future" movie again one night and thought that would be a great project as well. The model would be made out of EPS foam so it would even be light enough to maybe fly. So i started designing the model and did some calculations and it turns out to be actually feasable.
So the first part of the project is complete and the properties closely match the properties of the 3D-model, The 3D-model has a calculated weight of 13.940kg and the real life model has a weight of 13.890kg, which is only of few grams difference.
Subscribe to the channel if you want to receive updates on the next videos of this project, much appreciated.

A flying DeLorean? I haven't seen one of those in 30 years.

And how long has it been since you last saw a truck full of manure Biff? 🤔🤣
It's not often I see a huge industrial robot arm being used for something like this. Awesome!
I had this same idea since the whole quadcopter craze started, glad someone has the time and capacity to finally make it real.

This looks amazing. Can't wait to see the completed build!
I love this for many reasons. Cant wait for the next episode
I could watch you assemble that all day. Mesmerising!!
Looks awesome. Can't wait to see it fly.
Interesting project and a nice suction upgrade on the robot, what a difference! And an ABB robot, got to love those!
Oh wow, how cool! Looking forward to see if it will fly!
Excited to follow along! Big FliteTest energy.
You are my new CNC world class local hero. Thankyou for being born, ABB IRB6400.
This is just far and away too cool. That first cut on that very expensive block of EPS must have been a nail-biter, though. Excellent work.
This is going to be so cool!
Great idea can’t wait to see the end product
Beyond words. this is going to be astonishing.
Nice work!!!, I will wait the next chapters! Congrats!!
Great Scott interesting idea Thank you for showing us how to build one so cool. This is Heavy
With a profile picture like mine, I was always going to love a project like this 😀
Now I Can follow your work!🤩
You don’t need roads where we’re going 😜. Cool …that robot was amazing! I’m gonna need a bigger shed now 👍
So cool!! Some paint and LEDs and this could hang out at your local movie theater!
Great Scott, Marty!
Echt insane cool project Brian! Leuk om weer een nieuwe video van je te zien :)

PART 2! PART 2! PART 2! PART 2! Haha! CANT WAIT!!! Amazing work so far!
Very nice!!
So you're gonna put the fans in the front and the back areas of the body and obscure them with louvers? That’s really cool! That’s the same conclusion i came to all the times I've thought about how to do this. Glad to see someone have the money and motivation to do it! I'd love for it to be possible to put them in the wheels and have that be the source of lift but there's no way i can think of unless the whole body was insanely light and you put maybe 4 micro rc turbines in each wheel or something. Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
@secondarycontainment4727

I would assume that it would be a quad copter - the "wheels" would simply be nacelles for the props. Then it would easily be controlled by even off the shelf hardware...
This is insane...but I love it!
subbed, love deloreans
This is great 👍
woow its gonna be awesome
You need to make more videos! I'm currently working on the 3d scanner and can't wait to do the catapult!

Very very cool. She may not hit 88, but it’s sure looks neat!
Holy cow this is amazing! I have so many questions! Ahhh haha. I want to make a lightweight full size DeLorean time machine as well, but just to hang from the ceiling. The way you did it is so cool. That saved you so much time not having to cut and carve. Any more videos of this?
@BrianBrocken

Thanks man, yes saved a lot of time with the robot carving the car but on the other hand spend a lot of time designing the car in CAD. I'm currently editing the second video, should be posted pretty soon.
I wish I had the money/ resources to do anything to xD least u made it awesome for us all to enjoy 🤙
Alot of Machine Time. Well worth it. Great.
This man has been COOKING
finally. I watched on some youtube channel few years back that it was their dream to build such thing but I guess they never did it.
Awesome
Where is the part 2?????? This project is awesome!!!
I was here! This video needs more views!
YT is full of click baite and fake thumb nails. So I thought: Flying DeLorean? Of course… hoax. But look how you delivered. Man, you did it! So creative. Thanks for sharing. Can‘t wait for Part 2.
the song you used for this video is the exact same song i used for my videos back in highschool, i remember i got it from some royalty free music site lol
Do we have an update on this? Can't wait to see it fly
Ambitious project, but honestly, one of the coolest I've seen in quite a while. Can't wait to see the finished results
FF Background voices actually compliment some parts of the Soundtrack. Cheers

- Dad... I wanna flying car for Christmas... - Hold my Styrofoam vacuum...
I might suggest if you are fiberglass the car you might want to add Kevlar to it make it stronger than fiberglass rags
Could have added some cocktail sticks to the joins for additional strength!
@BrianBrocken
7 ай бұрын
This has been done on most parts including the doors but in the end doesn't matter that much as most of it will be covered in fibreglass, which will hold everything better together and add more stiffness.
dude this will be Farkn awesome when it takes to the skies, youll have Hollywood knocking at your door that or Marty telling you the worlds F up and we need to back to Dallas 22 11 1963
That's so cool! Will it be able to carry people? Or is it just for show?
@larryelliottchadscott5309

Bro it's Styrofoam it's not carrying anything 😅
Your weight estimate is right on! What kind of glue did you use to attach panels?
@BrianBrocken
7 ай бұрын
I used regular wood glue. It doesn't dissolve the foam and It's stronger than the foam itself so good enough to keep the panels together. The whole model will be covered in fibreglass to add some more strength and to be able to paint the model.

@@BrianBrocken I thought you might apply a water based paint, but fiberglass works!
cool!!!, where did you find such a milling bit?
You've got some know how, the kinematics to convert the robot arm into a milling machine is very difficult.
"Hey, Doc, we better infill. We don't have enough weight to get up to 88 pounds". "Weight? Where we're going we don't need weight"
Can someone please send me the info of how to get a robotic arm like that and the associated hardware and software that goes with it? That is ridiculously awesome! The project is to, but if love a machine like that!

This will be the lightest Delorean in the world.
Ok where to start? Can you help me know how to build a cardboard version for a science project / presentation in the late fall. I want it to roll into the presentation conference hall and am thinking it could be powered by a lawn motor engine. Any suggestions???

Are you gonna use the sideways wheels like in the movies? The models you've shown so far show the vertical wheels
@BrianBrocken
7 ай бұрын
I'll try to make them move in and outwards.
@meribor
7 ай бұрын
That's great if you can pull it off, but it sounds really tricky. You'd have to craft a way to support the car while the wheels transition from one mode to another. Again, it'll be cooler if you can do it, but maybe have that as a stretch goal?
When will part 2 be out?
Indoor decoration? Hanging on the wall? What will his wife say? 😂😂😂
what glue are you using to joint the styrofoam?
