Clean wiring, whether on a model railroad or in a house, is absolutely vital. Same goes for plumbing, although, you know, model railroad tend to not have a lot of that. There's nothing better than properly labeled, routed and connected wire, and you deserve a trophy for yours!

Well done Charlie. Good info there. Only 62? 😁 5 years behind me. My current problem is getting deliveries from the UK to Australia. I picked up a Hornby Duchess of Sutherland for a bargain price from eBay. It’s nearly 50 yrs old and I knew it would need a couple of buffers that are missing and smoke deflectors. Can’t get them here, but I did find them at Peters Spares in the UK. The total cost is about £12. However... with postage, the cost is approximately £30. (These items would fit in a tea bag) This is another example of how the pandemic is affecting overseas postage rates. Lack of international travel by air has blown out the cost of freight. Resorting to manufacturing my own from plasticard. Such is life!

Charlie's wife exists! I always assumed she was like Arthur Daley's wife or Mrs Mainwaring from Dad's Army, someone you heard about but never got any confirmation she existed. Great video as usual, and while I'm sure the wiring makes a lot of sense when you're putting it together, it's trying to decypher it in a few years time that's the challenge!

62? A mere baby!! We (the gaffer) decided to down-size 4 years ago as I approached 65. Now almost 68, I am in the early days of building a layout...the first in 50 years. Firstly, I had to build 2 large sheds...one for the layout and utility room (incl WC - old age doesn't come alone); and a second for the storage. Both heated. The info you provide is invaluable....so thank you once again. About to lay my first Peco point....here's hoping lol.

Hi Charlie, I am 78 and had similar problems earlier in the year with two duck unders so currently I redesigned my whole layout resulting in some new sections. My layout was always fixed but now similar to yourself as you I have utilized some new 8ft boards. My curiosity is you mention cutting the rails short at connection and inserting joining section. No having had to do this before will you be covering this in a future video. All your videos are seen with great interest thanks again. Keep up the good work

Excellent explained fiddle yard point end board Charlie. I like how you have it all laid out with the wiring, point motors, and the controller units etc. It may look like a multi motorway lane junction, but you can physically see the on and off (power) slip roads and sub route lanes (point motors, terminal blocks and controllers) going to there respective destinations (yes you can use that analogy. Like the old saying K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) not the US rock band or Knights In Satan's Service, LOL. A great tutorial not just for the laying of the tracks, points and motors, but for also showing how to keep your underboard connections neat and tidy to follow.

What a neat job Charlie. Your attention to getting all of those points laid so cleanly does produce a great result I certainly give you extra points for neat wiring. Interesting that you brought all the controls and connections up to the surface of the board - I'd not thought of that but it obviously does make sense on this storage level and will make trouble shooting easier. Thanks for the name checks, I have to say I've really enjoyed the work on helping you get the most from your storage level.

Beautifully done Charlie! I wish I had the patience to execute my wiring as neatly as you do. In my hidden sections I deliberately used the Gaugemaster surface mounted Soleniods; for three reasons: 1. Cheap but reliable. 2. Quick and easy installation. 3. The 'clack, clack, clack' gives me a degree of assurance that the route has set! Quite the opposite to your wish for silent point operation, but it's just one of my little peccadilloes ...

I just started the hobby and you have cleared up so much, I seen the green boxes and was wondering what they were. Now I know a tortoise, I am following along your series, and learning alot along the way. I knew i wanted to start this hobby, and I knew how to make dioramas but now to put them together and stay proportion. Now to start putting everything together, you cleared up my questions on what type of track to use. I'm going with flex track because of the scenes, around the 1930's to the 1960's. I have the room so I might go through a wall and make a warzone area. Still in concept stages, but it is going to be a five year journey. Thanks from a New Canadian viewer.

Thanks Charlie its good to see such progress. Something I learnt after my long fiddle yard was created was that B&Q sell ally channel about 15.5 mm wide in a long length. It can be used instead of the track setter for long lengths of straight track by simply dropping it between the track on OO both code 75 and code 100. That way you can get very straight runs of track. A 2 or 3 metre run and another one split 1/3 & 2/3 will give you many options for straight runs. Keep them coming , can't wait to see whole fiddle yard completed with both helixes.

I have found getting an off cut and putting it under these areas help if there is somewhere you're leaning a lot, it only marks the top layer then it seems Heat wise it's just I made the mistake of turning track upside down on it and soldering some wire to the bottom and it marked it. As long as you don't expose it to metal you're soldering I don't think heat will be an issue. I'd not solder droppers on after laying the track though. Or knocking it with track ends. I aren't concerned as I'll be ballasting etc where it is in due course anyway.

Yet another fab video. I really like your vids because they are intersting, instructive and at the same time funny in places. Can I just point out a couple of things that might be useful? When stripping the wires just strip enough so that the insulation is up to but not touching the rails. I say this because when showing us the connecting of the stock rail to the blade you put both red and black wires down the same hole and to me you left just enough bare wire to possibly short out when together in the hole. Another point, no pun intended, when wiring the point motors I find it easier to solder short lengths to the motor and terminate the other end into choc blocks like you did with the accessory decoders and the block detectors so that any alterations needed is easier. Looking forward very much to the next instalment.

Hi Charlie, I have to admit I also used Anyrail to design my baseboard layout, albeit after trying a number of other software's that only confused me. I do agree it a great piece of design software, what it is very useful for is trying out various changes to the layout to see it it looks right before actually ripping out your previous hard work. I wasn't aware of the Tortoise point motors until after I had plumbed for DCC Concepts Omega point motors, these work just the same but you don't have to solder any connections as they are all pressure clamped by little levers, everything else is the same as the Tortoise as they can be used on analogue or DCC. A very tidy construction, it's a credit to you for your forward planning.

That's looking superb Charlie. Great work. Regarding the comment about UV stability of Polystyrene Foam, unless the layout is outside it's unlikely to be a problem. Firstly, glass (as in windows) blocks UVB and UVC rays, which is why you can't get a Suntan under glass! Secondly, in most cases the foam will be covered in scenics i.e Ballast and Grass etc. so won't be exposed anyway. Can't wait to see it finished.

In Taking On Your * Red / Black * DCC Power-Feed Issue and Also Against Several Comments; There Is Quite An Easy Way To Resolve This Sometimes Confusing Matter At Time Of Layout Construction. Take An Item Of Rolling Stock; Place It On The Track At Your Chosen Datum Starting-Point; Write RED / BLACK On Either Side and Then Simply Run It Around The Layout. Apart From Special Wiring Considerations ( Like A Double-Gapped / Isolated Reverse-Loop ); Your Red / Black Power-Feed Wiring Orientation Is Then Easily Determined ! Hi Charlie. I like Larry Puckett's version of modifying the electrofrog points by cutting either side of the frog and, leaving the two jumper wires in situ. This made the fitting of plastic isolators on the frog rails redundant plus, if your points need to be next to a curve, means you can solder the rails so you get a better transition. Personally, I much prefer the MegaPoints Controller methodology for point control and Mimic Panel control. Each to their own, though.
