Love the idea of the trex top. Nicely done. Only concern would be the dowels holding the bottom beam. Probably not strong enough over the long haul especially if people put their feet on jt.

Valid point. I also glued the joint and added 2.5” pocket screws along with the 45 degree braces. It’s holding up well so far but if the beam starts to move I’ll maybe add a couple of those heavy duty/structural deck screws

@@tdz69 the top will get toasty in the direct sun on one its gets close to 90 degrees out but those days we wouldnt want to eat outside anyway. I designed it with space to add an umbrella if needed

Great video. I’m looking to build a table similar to this but am at a beginner level. I do not have a table saw or router. Is there a work-around for these? Also, is the 4x4 beam underneath a “knee-knocker” or is there plenty of room?

Your table will still look great if you forgo cutting off the round-over edges on the 45 degree 4x4 blocks, I would suggest some wood filler on the small gaps this will leave but with a dark stain it blends right in. The beam underneath hasn't given anyone any bruises yet, plenty of room

How would I adjust your plans to make a table that is 12 feet long by 4 feet wide? I love this concept but can't figure out how to extrapolate your design to make it larger...any assistance would be amazing!

Ideally the length of your base is 2/3 the length of your full table, if you are basing off my plans on a 12' table you'd go with 89" on the middle beam (part B) and 142" on the aprons (part D). the rest of the structure stays the same and you'll just need to increase the top Trex boards accordingly

Thanks! Can you tell me the size of your drill bits you used throughout (i.e in the kreg tool, when you drilled for the dowels, etc.) as well as the depth of the holes?

I used the 3/8 bit that Kreg includes in their pocket hole jig. I messed around with some test pieces to find the depth on the 2x4's (on the 4x4 pocket holes you can go to full depth on the jig). On the dowels I was around 1 1/4" deep

I also meant to ask - did you use cedar for the 4x4s and pressure treated for the rest?

I have a question you say you cut your long blocks 14" long edge to long edge, but your plans say 14 1/2" for Segments F and C. Just asking because I am attempting to do this next week when I am off work. Thanks!

Thanks Mariana! Yes wanted to have this as a option for the future. The middle board is centered so you could drill a hole through the trex and the 4x4 for an umbrella

Did you also pocket screw the cross beam in place or just glue and dowel?

What changes would I have to make if I wanted to use a wood top? Also what kind of wood did you use?

I used trex which is a composite wood usually used on decks. The middle boards have grooves on the edges that let me use hidden fasteners. Only change need if you are using real wood is that likely your only option for securing all the boards would be to screw down from the top.

As someone who is researching using Trex deck boards to replace my wood tabletop, I can tell you DO NOT screw the wood boards down to the tabletop. This prevents the boards from being able to move (as they will naturally swell and contract over time). This will cause your boards to crack and you'll end up having to replace them (as I am now having to do!). I used 2x8 boards on my original table, which was very sturd, but made the table very heavy to move, if needed. I was considering using 1x8s this time to lighten the load, but would likely cause more warping than the 2x8s. Hence, here I am looking at composite decking boards.

Can you drill a hole for an umbrella through the top and the cross beam?

Yes that’s an option, our patio can get a lot of sun so I may do that at some point

I considered that, my thought was securing the edge boards from the bottom wouldn’t be as strong. If someone were to lift the table from the overhang I didn’t want the boards to potentially pull off the fasteners

Very nice! I’m a beginner and looking for projects after I finish my subwoofer builds and the metal table on the back screened patio is wasting away so wanted to replace with something that would last a while. As a beginner I also want to know if you have plans available in case I get stuck with building a slightly shorter version of the trestle table. Thanks!

My subwoofers should be done/connected today so about ready to take this on. Is there a materials list? I ordered the Kreg XL jig and both 4” and 1.5” pocket hole screws. What size screws did you use other than the pocket hole screws - #12? Still trying to figure out how to transport 16’ long Trex boards but I think they are also available in 8’ lengths. In one spot you say gap between boards is 1/2” and another 1/4” which is correct? What did you use to cut part of Trex connector off for the last row of solid boards?

i want to know how you get lumber so cheap?

I got all the wood from my local Home Depot and the Trex came from Lowe's.

I made a similar table, except I used red cedar for my lumber, so it was slightly expensive.

Model is DW716, its one of their basic 12" saws and I have a Diablo blade on it.

I can get an untreated 8 foot Doug Fir 4x4 for $13 at my home depot right now

It's absolutely all wrong.. 8 TREX BOARDS x 8' or 4 TREX x 16' 8 BOARDS 2 x 4 x 8' 5 POST 4 x 4 x 8'

Not sure where you are located but here in Southern California that table would hold up for more than a decade easily. Nice job thanks for the inspiration.
