Overall another enjoyable Bandai kit, despite a few issues which I talk about in the video. Comments and feedback welcome!

I've always liked Space Battleship Yamato/ Starblazers ship designs. They have are kinda in the middle of Star Trek's curvy sleek lines with lots of text and makings and Star Wars no nonsense squares with pipes and stuff (but no text markings)

Im not a fan of the Yamato itself.. it has good things but i never liked that "boat bow".. its like its way too much.. however the rest of the ships i love.. they did much better that merge between classic seagoing battleship and spaceship with later models like the Dreadnough here or the Arizona
That Dark Ghost Grey looks almost the same grey as the primer. I’d probably use black surface primer for panel depth and to make it easier to see the base color as it is applied. BTW that Vallejo 71.120 that used to be Medium Grey had a bluish hue to it and looks more now almost exactly like 71.255 Light Blue RLM65.

Thanks for posting your build of the dreadnought. I pulled my unpainted copy of the kit off the shelf and I did not have any of the fit issues that you unfortunately had. Tolerances are super tight on this kit so perhaps a bit of gentle sanding to remove paint from the connector pegs will help remove the gaps. A nice quick build!

Cheers! If there's one downside to these snap-together kits is that you can't do much dry fitting without the risk of parts snapping together. Although I will try it more on the Yamato, just to be sure.

Those deck decals leave a lot to be desired. I would have painted the decks. As for the lights...since they are pre-wired I would split them apart and run micro-wire through the hull down to the base and put the batteries/controls outside the ship (under the base??). Looks like a great kit and it comes in scale with the Polar Lights Star Trek stuff so you can do cross-genre battles.

Turned out great. As much as I love to make these model kits, I find it way too stressful. Its just the fact that you can spend all that time and mess up which I did bulding one of the fighters from this series. Sadly no undo button :P but I guess the more you do the more skill you get.

Thank you! I'd say the biggest skill you learn over time is how to fix things when you do screw up, which still happens to me from time to time. There is a limit though, I've abandoned a few kits over the years due to just not being able deal with a stuff up!

I agree when it comes to the smaller kits for these ships. The ship guns get so thin that I accidentally broke one when I was trying to fix a part on a ship.
Wow! I just saw animation recently, but I did not know that those new models were on sale. When I was a child I had made plenty of plastic models of the Space Battleship Yamato. From 1979 to around 1981.The present model is slightly different in shape from the past, and it seems that more detailed are being expressed. It may be difficult for a child to build. Sorry for my bad English.

@modelchili
6 жыл бұрын
Cheers! By regular ships do you mean spaceships or real ships? I have examples of both on the channel. :)
I think, despite the problems, this kit came out looking nice. It was definitely an odd choice with the decals on the removable parts; I can only guess they figured the person building it would simply cut through the decals where necessary to allow for access to the lights. It would have more sense (at least to me) to just make them separate decals.

I build ships 1/4 this size and I can def say I have had to remake many radio antenna before. Thats why I tell people to save their sprue from kits...you can remake parts if you have to. There is a precise way to put things together and some manufacturers do not lay them out well in the instructions. Bandai is usually pretty good about it.
The light is an addon the OG kit didn't have a light

I just get them from my local hobby shop. If you don't have one I hear a lot of people use Amazon.
Why did you go with the decals for the deck plates rather than just painting it? Even without the issues taking the ship apart to access the light switches it seems to me that it probably would have been easier to paint and panel line the surface rather than fiddle with a decal across a textured surface like that. Great build though. I've never seen that technique where you clean an acrylic wash off of an enamel lacquer before. I've seen people do similar things cleaning oil based washes off of an acrylic based clear coat, but I didn't know you could do that with an acrylic wash as well.
@modelchili
6 жыл бұрын
Good question. :) The decal has the deck lines which aren't molded into the kit. If they were I probably would have painted it then used a wash. Yeah I always do acrylics over the lacquer layer, I've tried using acrylic clear coats and they just don't seem as durable for my needs. And thanks!

there is nothing wrong with the model
Bandai irritates the hell out of me. Fantastic detail....... but then they do their parts breakdown for those stupid (way overpriced and underperforming) light 'kits', that result in some horrible gap issues. Their kits are a PITA to modify for good lighting.
Screw the decals tape and paint the deck. You have the skills!. Unless they are high quality THIN decals paint or stencil the markings. Kit decals are usually so thick that you end up buying after market products. Not sure how Bandai decals are but Tamiya decals suck. Good kits but decals suck. Nice build though.
Not enough guns.
Cool but audio terrible!!
I ALSO want to note......... I have a Google Pixel 7Pro, that C A N, translate the Japanese instructions..... at least you Might want to use such a 'smart phone' to translate the "Information about the ship/model" Used it on my instruction sheet on 'Guypellon-class' Astro-Carrier... which was ALL in Japanese!!
