Building a DIY Water Filter Using BioChar and a 3 Gallon Jug - Ann's Tiny Life

I show you how I build a diy water filter using BioChar aka activated carbon, and a 3 gallon jug. Although I have every confidence that this will make water safe to drink, boiling water is always safest! With that said, I've been building and using water filters very similar to this over the last year and I've never gotten sick from the water that's come out of my filters. Although I have the constitution of an ox, so there's that!

  • @AnnsTinyLife

    @@alanpeksider2255 I don't recommend the use of charcoal briquettes used in barbecue grills as a filter medium. It's not pure, even when crushed it doesn't have as much surface area by which to capture impurities, and may include chemicals which bind the briquettes together as well as chemicals to help them ignite quicker.

  • @keyofg2020

    @keyofg2020

    @@alanpeksider2255 "Activated" carbon is what you want to use. It is made by burning at high temperature in the absence of oxygen. This is why if you're making your own in a survival situation you take hot coals from the fire and burry them in the soil until they cool. Otherwise the carbon will already have bonded with other material and not work as a filter. Charcoal for barbecue likely has a number of harmful chemicals as well. Do NOT use it for this. You can pick up "activated" carbon at most pet stores.

    I use about 6 layers of pantyhose covered with 4 or 5 layers of cotton t-shirt instead ofthe cheese cloth. And before adding the sand and rocks, either bake them in the oven on 450°F for about 20 min or heat up in a frying pan on high to kill any germs. Or tou can boil them for at least 20 minutes, if you prefer. Also add a spigot to your bottom bucket and set the entire assembly up on some type of pedestal so you can access the purified water more easily. Also, a new teracotta planter with the hole plugged works very well as a filter.

    Thanks so much for sharing this. I harvest rainwater and am just about to make my own two bucket "kitchen" filter using similar methods...charcoal, sand, small and large pebbles and moss. I'll boil it to drink simply due to the sheer amount of birds we get on our roof (bird poop! Never know what's in it) but even though the mains water here in Ireland is free, it doesn't taste particularly good and to drink it, we've to put it through a filter jug. That takes a lot of expensive filters and the muck and grit that comes from the tap water is pretty bad. So given how much it rains here, I'm keen to make full use of it. :)

    That was great to watch because you prove that the filter actually works and in a situation where you didn't have plenty of running water you can just keep pouring the water through the filter until you get all the dust out and of course it's not that difficult to make your own charcoal I wonder though if you could make bags of the cheesecloth to separate the different elements or you several containers to hold the charcoal and the sand and the gravel separately

    Amazing, thank you so much. Really going to do this, those filter manufacturers are such jerks, 160 for a berkey filter now. Note, for those making their own charcoal, I read it is manufactured by burning in the absence of oxygen. Thats hard to achieve at home. Caution, ash plus water makes a very strong caustic type of alkalie, so I guess rinse the kind made by burning outdoor, or just buy the one this fine person recommends, thats what I'm doing 100%, not messing with wood.

SECOND after the SPIRIT of God.❤️John 7:37-39...On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'" Rocks are only needed, I think, to catch larger particles, but someone correct me if I am wrong about that.

    Made some scary discoveries, there's a lot of places where you'll bring your 1 gallon bottle, pay for filtered water, I was curious, bought a gallon, put my EC meter in..... It was 500ppm, actually more than my nasty tapwater, but I know a place they sell RO water and it is 30 ppm, but still, my tapwater is almost free, so your to-do is awesome and beautiful, simple and affordable

    Ann's Tiny Life I think the best part of this is you can make it as small a a 2 Ltd bottle (which I watched Ann make in the van life) or as large as a 3-5gallon jug like this. The great part is it doesn’t have to be rain water, I watched Ann’s 2 Ltd. bottle clean water from a lake that looked filthy. It ended up as clean as this water. You wouldn’t have to scoop smaller amounts into the jug you can just pour water from the 5gal bucket into the jug until it is filled to the top. When that filters, just do it again all at once if you need to. I think I would pour the water from the 5 gallon bucket into a few pitchers to fit in the refrigerator one at a time. Store the rest in the water jug she already has with a spigot top. Use the second bucket to place upside down over the opening in the 3-gallon jug until you need to use it again.

    It depends on what type of water you're filtering. If it has a lot of particulate and discoloration it will last less. I filter captured rain water that's filtered through a screen and has little to no algae in it. This filter lasted a year before I felt it needed rebuilding. If the filtered water begins looking cloudy or taste and smell seems of rebuild it.

    Good job. You probably wouldn't need to fuss so much with so many repeated filter run throughs if you go ahead and use sand and also use cloth, like cotton T-shirt cloth or cotton. The trade off is that it may take a little longer to filter, but not as many times before you produce desired purification. You can also layer the materials twice i.e. cloth, activated charcoal, sand, gravel, then another layer of cloth, activated charcoal, sand, gravel. I'm hoping to do my own experiment soon. Imitating nature, this is cool!

    yes you can use the water that you filter through. just make sure that it's Crystal clear and has no odor. if you're uncomfortable just boil it! when I first started building this filter using a 2 l soda bottle I was filtering disgusting gross lake water! in fact I used to camp at this campground where all of the water supply at the full hookup campsites was lake water. I drank it and got sick! but I went and grabbed some of the water right out of the lake and filtered it through this filter and it came out crystal clear and drinkable! I drank it for months during the time that I visited this campground and never got sick once.

  • @AnnsTinyLife

    thank you! it depends on a couple factors: how dirty the water is, how often you use it or gallons of water filtered. I filter captured rain water so its already pretty clean because it goes in through a screen. I used this very filter for a year until it seemed like the results weren't as crystal clear. I would closely examine the water every time you use it, as well as smell it for funky odors. if something doesn't seem pristine, probably time for a new one. or at least break it down and fill it with new cheesecloth and carbon.

    I ordered it off of Amazon. the company's name is hydrotec. their logo is displayed in the video. I have a question~how do you go about getting the water in the clean bucket to drink/use? Do you have another bucket to put the filter system on to start a new bucket? Maybe that is why you mentioned the 2 lids. Hmmm~wonder if there is a way I can put a spigot on the clean bucket ( plumbing is not my thing~although I saw you put one on your water catching barrel~if you can do it~I can do it~I think. oh as long as how long it will last? I've never made a filter this big so I'm not sure. So that information will have to come later. on my smaller ones they would last me at least 6 months. but there's other factors you have to take into consideration too. like how many times you're using the filter, how much water you're filtering each time, etc. here is a link to how long a Berkey water filter last. It's not the same system but it will give you an idea. I'm betting it's pretty close to how long a Berkey water filter would last. theberkey.com/pages/faqs#How%20often%20do%20the%20Black%20Berkey%20Purification%20Elements%20need%20to%20be%20replaced I'm betting this filter that I have will last about a year.
