Building a Blown Pontiac Killer from a 185HP Mid-70s Smog Engine! Let's Tear it Down!!!

My 1974 Street Freak Firebird needs a proper Supercharged Pontiac V8 making big power and bigger noise! This 1975 Smog Era is actually a great candidate to make big power! I scooped this greasy, grimy, very seized 400 for $900 bucks, but it's got all the potential in the world. I'll explain why as I fight and claw this thing apart.

    Also, when that jerk in the corner pipes up(the air compressor), go silent for a bit to catch the noise, then you can use your audio editor's noise reduction with that noise you captured as the profile and you can pretty much kill it off and keep going if you don't want to re-shoot. You can do this when you start filming somewhere with constant noise you can't control too, like fans, pumps, etc. if you just capture 5 seconds or so of ambient noise. Keep an eye on your stereo levels in post too and turn any mono segments into stereo. Lots of KZreadrs miss these two.

    those who used that label are fans of RPM and don't know what "torque" means, tho obviously the SD and RA4's were ready to rev as well. Pontiacs back before the internet were easy torque monsters right out of the junkyard. grab 6x heads, cut certain exhaust manifolds open and port, and a few other tricks and you had more off-idle torque than the average street mouse running a tunnel ram and looking hairy but then can't turn better than 15's. big issue is going to be the armasteel 'rods and the exposed lifter bores. sorta like screwing with Cad472's--a great way to get diesel like torque in your truck before the 502 rat became common.

    Thank you Tony for picking a Pontiac. I've had a few Pontiac motors. I love em !! I know them and how they act and respond too what ever you can do too em.there very easy too build up. You can make tons of low end torque that I've seen twist parts into a pretzel shape !!! Yes your right about they don't like too rev very high! But all the positives they bring too your table more than make up for that!!! I've had 326 , 400 , 428 engine's my favorite was my 68-69 428 yk engine. STOCK 370 -390 HP. No mods! If you can't do anything with that your not trying!!! Now that motor was in my 77 TA. I paid 600.00 bucks for. Now after I fixed EVERYTHING THAT WAS DONE WRONG ... AND THERE WAS A TON . The rearend I discovered it was a Detroit locker. I had a buddy check it out just too make sure I wasn't seeing things or just plain delusional . But he said I was right on the money . After looking at the numbers on it we found a 241:1 gear set in it . He was well we should change that . I said whoa and thought no leave it in. Let's build around it so when I built the turbo 400 for it . I had it built for that final drive gear in the rear. So to speak. I was on a very limited budget. Had lots of friends that knew way more than I did. That had built more cars than I've seen pictures of.so working for them I was able too trade labor for work.many hours of junkyard hunting for all the stuff I needed. This was when the SD 455 TA'S had ben around for awhile so you could find parts CHEAP! NOW NO WAY!! when I got it put together it WOULD OUT RUN JUST About ANYTHING ELSE ON MY STREETS. 100 mph my tach read 2600 rpm and I had over 3 " of gas pedal left before it was on the floor .top speed was over 150 but I not too many roads would handle that in my state. And most of the law enforcement in my area knew my car. And would follow me everywhere. Just waiting for me too screw up I got a lot of tickets in that car BUT IT WAS THE MOST FUN I EVER HAD. I Didn't. RACE A 1/4 MILE . I RACED 10 - 30 MILES WHOEVER GOT There FIRST WON. SOMETIMES IT WAS A GENTLEMEN'S BET AND SOMETIMES IT WAS BIG MONEY!! I VERY RARELY LOST!!! I'm 63 now and miss that car so much. I've thought about building 1 more.just too show THAT OLD SCHOOL MUSCLE CAN HOLD ITS OWN. AND BE VERY COMPETITIVE!! good luck and I will be following this.

    Hey great job on the sound, much better. Glad to see you doing a Pontiac motor. Built a bunch of these in the 70's. They are really interchangeable and the heads flow really nice. The valve stem height is very critical, the rockers torque down and have no adjustment. The first one I built was a 326 Tempest with a bigger crank and cam made it a lot of fun. Great job, keep it coming. Going to miss you on Hot Rod Garage, but Alex Taylor is going to be a great asset also.

    Nice upgrade with the mics, now you need to run a gated compressor and some light EQ in post. Cheaper mics tend to miss bass frequencies or sound like the mic is too far away, so you’ll sound a bit sharp and sibilant. Bring those highs down and the bass up. Compression makes the volume of your voice even throughout the video even when you’re moving around, and using the gate feature will keep some of the noise out- like breathing, cable noise, scratching, footsteps, etc.

    The main bearings aren't why Pontiacs don't like to rev real high, trust me 3" mains will survive at 7500 my 467 has. The reason they are usually done by 6000 rpm is very simple, the intake runners are longer than most engines, with a smaller cross section, which makes them high velocity ports, then they have a venturi shape which speeds up the air as well. What happens when you got from a stock 150cfm head like the 6X to a 330cfm head like Butler does with Edelbrock heads? They make more torque EVERYWHERE. Its the same effect as the long runners on the LS engines, but with more cubes and longer strokes. Thing is... you dont NEED much RPM when you are making diesel like torque... but, when you give it more air it will rev higher too. Pontiacs are like blown engines, they don't really like or need lots of gear and stall. Sure you can build them so they spin to 7500 and make all their power above 5500, but being able to pull a 3.08 gear and run quicker/faster than the chevy with the 4.56+ gear means you can daily drive it and go on road trips. Making 500ftlbs at 3000rpm is so freakin easy with a Pontiac, and its easy to make 500ftlbs at 6000 too. We don't get stuck on the HP much, because making 400hp at 3500rpm is going to move a vehicle easier than making 400hp at 9000rpm. HP is simply torque over time. TQ x RPM / 5252 = HP. Ask Butler and they are always very conservative on the HP they say it will make. My 467 has the 330cfm heads on it, and its making over 600ftlbs all the way down at 3000rpm, and that is with a 270/272@.050 108 solid roller. It is making 700ftlbs between 4800 and 5000. The chassis dyno day was rather amusing, because LS guys and blown Cobra owners were upset that a NA dinosaur engine on pump gas made a lot more torque than they could. In the next few weeks those heads are going on a 505, when Butler gets the machine work done on my IAII block. I'm building a budget version of Justin Shearer's 482, it might see boost, but not over 20psi. I like to build ludicrous stuff, and that engine fits that criteria. Its good to hear you have been talking to Scott and Greg in Tennessee, they won't steer you wrong or blow smoke up your rear. What Jim started decades ago has become the standard when you consider customer service, knowledge, quality workmanship, and how much power the thing makes. I got to know Jim relatively well 20 years ago, there's a reason I keep going back to them.

    @@dawsonblanchard5832 that I have one in my 96 Tahoe, a 97 4x4 long box standard cab, and one in a 96 extended cab 4x4. I am not a fan of the sbc. You would not like my opinion of them, suffice it to say I call them orange lumps for a reason. The Tahoe is getting a 5.3, the extended cab is a parts truck, and the 97 is getting repaired and repainted so I can turn it into some cash. I like the Dodge 5.9 better than the sbc, and I am not much of a Dodge fan. So if you look through my channel and see the trucks and cars, every car but the 98 Formula is getting a Pontiac (or Ford because its a Ford) and the trucks are all getting LS swaps. The LS is a vastly superior engine to the sbc. Now I have ot go out to the shop, pull a 4.8/4L60E from a 2007 crew cab, and stuff a 6.0/4L80E in it from a 2500HD... or maybe the Denali. That way I can pull my old cars around all summer as I move them from Nebraska to Michigan... its just a 1000 mile one way trip. Lets go Brandon with this $4.50 gas.

    I was gonna say something about the heads too. I won't claim to know much about Pontiac specifically but it's a safe bet that any factory 1974 heads are gonna be pretty much garbage. I don't know what the right heads are to go with, even something moderate like production Edelbrock heads will be a massive improvement and I bet the Butler reworked ones like you mention are much better than that.

  • @SweatyFatGuy

    @SweatyFatGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@totensiebush interestingly enough, all the D ports with 2.11" intake valves flow within 10-15 cfm of each other up to .550 lift. There's not really a 'bad' head, just hard to find casting numbers. Some of the small valve heads flow pretty good too, like the 16, 46, and 47. The 6X he has was the head that came on everything from 1976 to 1979, 350s and 400s both had them. The 76 455 had a big chamber head and about 7:1 compression. They still flowed with the 72cc heads from the 60s. The big difference among the D ports is combustion chamber size, thats how Pontiac changed compression ratios. It allows us to mix and match to get the compression we want. Its quite handy, we can go from 7:1 to 13:1 on a flat top 455 with just a head swap, and thats factory iron heads. Its a general rule that if it has screw in studs, its a good head. Some of the pressed stud heads like 15 and 11 were great heads too. These are not chevy engines, they are not ford or mopar engines, which means the Pontiac does what it was designed to do VERY well, and most of the factory parts are very good. Like the intake manifolds, the stock Qjet intake is just as good as, or better than every aftermarket intake out there on an iron head. That is how I can build lots of power so cheaply, because all the stock stuff works and the core engine comes with it. Lately I am upgrading the rods for forgings, because the cost of a forging is about the same as resizing the stock rods and putting in ARP bolts. Its a wash, so why not go with the forged rod? Likewise you don't need lots of duration and lift, but still most people tend to under cam their Pontiac engines. The majority also have a penchant for getting as close as possible to 9.5:1 compression, whereas I don't. If I am doing a pump gas engine it gets 8:1 so I can run 87 octane, the extra point doesn't give me enough power to warrant having to run 93 octane, which around here is $5.30 a gallon. Thats what race gas cost me in the 90s. Usually I go for E85 compression, which is over 11:1, and is achieved easily by bolting a set of 72cc heads from 1967-1970 on it. Sure I can run E85 in a 5:1 compression engine, but it uses so much fuel its not worth it. Around 12:1 is the break even point where E85 gets the same mileage as gasoline, but while making a lot more power. I had a set of 6X heads like Tony has on a 400 short block I built in the 1990s with TRW pistons, just under 8:1, its like 7.7:1 or so. I ran it in my 65 GTO for a couple summers, made long distance road trips over 1000 miles in one shot. Best it got was 15mpg with a 2.56 rear and Th350 behind that 400. Even with FiTech EFI it never did better than 15mpg. In 2018 I put my 13:1 compression 455 in with a 3.42 rear gear, that thing got 18mpg mixed driving and made ludicrous power. The head gaskets need to be a bit better for over 11.7:1 than the cheap Felpro pieces, so I swapped on some 670 heads from a 428 that I had ported by Butler in the 90s. Mileage dropped to 17mpg, but it still makes enough power to push the ol Goat into the mid 11s in the quarter... with a 3.08 gear. It has a hurt Th350 behind it right now, so I can't do a dragy run with it just yet. I like to maximize cylinder pressure with camshaft timing and static compression, because it works the fuel harder so I get more out of the same amount of fuel. With 9.5 you are always on the verge of ping/knock, so you have to back the timing down, and Pontiac engines love advanced timing. They make their power below 5000rpm, right where more advance pays off. The factory heads are quite good, they have features only available on race heads for chevys, and some only after 1996. 13 degree valves, 2.11" intakes, 1.77" exhausts, screw in studs, machined chambers and gasket surfaces, and they are relatively cheap. That has been factory since 1967. The best parts are no burned plug wires, air gap intakes from the factory, and you have to really look to see what size it is... and then it can be stroked up to 489 or so. Not to mention how easy it is to produce torque everywhere in the RPM range. Its a different way of thinking than chevy guys. They want all the RPM, deep gears, big stalls, single plane intakes...all of which will make a Pontiac slower.

    Good sound, GREAT build!! I used to have a '76 Formula that had a '74 SD-455 in place of the as-built 400. The original owner bought it new where he worked - Royal Pontiac {Pontiac's equivalent of Yenko Chevrolet}. They had a couple spare "unit exchange" SD-455's on hand, so they swapped out the 400 for the 455 - and kept ALL the warranties intact!! 12 years later, he sold it, and I bought it. It was the first car I ever drove that scared the crap out of me when I got on it; if you weren't careful, it could easily kick you sideways during the shift from 2nd to 3rd!!! In addition to the SD-455, it had a full-on Ram Air system, and a 3.73 Posi. True dual exhaust; those 3-inch pipes made some bee-yoo-tee-full music when I was be-bopping down the highway. Only track-raced it twice - 13.12 @ 102mph. And aside from it's orange paint and black stripes, it was still somewhat of a sleeper - no spoilers, fender flares, or shaker scoops to call attention to it. I even went so far as to have a pair of T/A style split exhaust tips powdercoated in black, to further the illusion......

    Welcome to the Pontiac world! I was hoping that you were aware of the 557 block switchover in 1975 and I’m glad you don’t have one. Water sits in the recesses of the intake and over time corrodes the heads of the intake bolts. I’ve fought the same exact battle with getting those bolts out. The stock intake actually performs very well on a mild build, but it’s heavy. People try to treat these engines like small block Chevies and they wind up with 4.56 gears in the rear and rods through the side of the block. You don’t need to spin them to the moon to make power. I had a trans am with a 455 and 3.55 gears on 28” slicks that would lift the front wheels on the launch. If you go with a mechanical water pump use one with a cast iron impeller to avoid overheating. The stamped steel impeller ones do not work. Hammer the edge of the dividing plate down until it just clears the impeller. Don’t accidentally leave out the two sleeves. Main bearing diameter - there is no high volume oil pump, but there is a high pressure oil pump for the ram air 4 which I think is a regular pump with a high pressure relief spring in it. Oil pressure requirements relate to the diameter of the bearing journal size as you said. Be careful that you have enough oil pressure for the RPMs you plan to run. Butler is an excellent choice for parts and engine building advice and they won’t steer you wrong. I just subscribed.

  • @riveneva1519

    @riveneva1519

    2 жыл бұрын

    Alana - the 988 casting was re-introduced for the 1978 year for W72 engines. Pontiac had issues with the thin walled 557 casting, and instead of re-engineering it they simply went back to the better block. 1977 W72s got the 557 unfortunately. Most people aren’t aware that Pontiac stockpiled 400 blocks until thanksgiving weekend in 1977, and then stopped casting them because of a corporate edict. All 1978 models got blocks cast in 1977, and only manual transmission equipped Pontiac’s got them in 1979. Automatic equipped cars in 1978 got the Oldsmobile 403. The 1975 block in my trans am is a 988 block so it was made early in 1975. My W72 engine in your hanger is a 1978 model, so yes, it is a 988 block.
