Building a Basketball Court in a Garage with an Epoxy Floor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

New Epoxy Garage Floor Course: decorativeconcreteschool.com
When I originally priced this epoxy project, it was quoted as a typical vinyl chip epoxy & polyaspartic garage floor. While I was on the quote, the homeowner asked me if I could also paint basketball court lines on the floor.
First we ground the concrete to prep it for epoxy. We applied a coat of epoxy primer and broadcast vinyl chips into the epoxy. The next day we came back and cleaned up the excess vinyl chips and top-coated the floor with clear polyaspartic urethane. We let the urethane cure overnight and came back the next day to paint lines on the basketball court.
We bought the court line tape machine for a gymnasium floor a few years ago and Im glad were getting to use it again for this garage floor.
One of my favorite things about the tape machine is that it comes with a circle kit that helps you tape perfect circles for the three point line and key.
Once the lines were taped on the floor, we painted them black with a single coat of urethane.

I saw the recommendation for spraying which would have avoided the bleed through. However, rolling is totally fine as well. Just do something called "back-painting" first. Once you tape off, roll a thin layer of whatever the color under the tape is, in this case clear. The clear will bleed and "fill the void" under the edge of the paint allowing your color coat to be perfectly crisp with no bleed through. You can apply this method across any type of painting project. Looks good though. Nice to see proper technique on application method and measurements.

  • @TimDCVA

Omni Media Group - it is noted to be between 16 and 18 feet tall (in the middle) - see other comments. An elite level shooter’s ideal arc tops out at between 15 and 17 feet - hardly plenty of room/no allowance for margin of error and that is on an elite level player. Having a constant concern of hitting the ceiling, could easily lead to the user developing a flatter shot. At the end of the day - these guys did a great job on the floor (their area of expertise) and the practicalities of the garage being used as a basketball court is irrelevant to that fact. But I cannot help question if the intention was to make it a mixed use garage/basketball court before the garage was built or not - having a rafter ceiling and what appears to be a reasonable pitch adds cost - given the severe limitations of the court itself - it seems like either not much thought was put into it, or they didn’t think it through - although could be other restrictions around planning, permits available space etc.

Sam Beaumont i didn’t realize Stephen Curry was going to be playing here regularly lol. It’s just their garage for family and friends to come play at. Most people aren’t going to be shooting 18 feet tall shots.

I don’t know if it would be a good idea to use mod podge on a garage floor...but your premise is correct. We’ve painted lines on other projects since I made this video and using clear urethane on the edges of the tape and it does make the colored lines more crisp. 👍🏻👍🏻

Awesome job on the floor, but all the owner will be able to do is layups and (if they're able) dunks. Maybe practice free throws, but any shots there will be arrows, when you should be shooting rainbows. Oh well, maybe they're a traditional big man

Real world layups could be dangerous with the baseline so close to the wall. Floaters, Post, Mid Range, Free Throws and three point shots from the top on a good day should be fine at 16-18’ ceiling (internal dimension). But I doubt it was these guys jobs to comment on the practical use of the garage as a basketball court to the property owner.

It seems solid to play regularly on it, maybe it is less expansive than a normal home court with those plastic square that you clip together ? Bravo from France 👏🇲🇫
