Building a 2020 Harbor Freight Trailer

What it is like to build a 2020 Version of the Harbor Freight Trailer. This is the 1195 lb capacity version. This is updated and comes with LED lights all the way around, all the holes lined up perfectly. I had no issues with fitment. I would recommend this product to anyone.

I've recently put this on my order list. Welding the frame makes it sturdier (I'll do that, but will have a local welder guy on speed dial, if I screw up).

Was going to pick up one of 4x8 trailers tomorrow but the Harbor Freight here doesn't have any in stock and never know when they will have any or when they will be on sale. Good to know that they are on top of things. Later.

Thomas Davidson i had the same problem. I just had to keep calling around to my local stores and they finally had one. Good luck!

I had same problem. But I got one today! But sadly had to drive 2.5 hours to store that had one.

Once you put the floor in place you may have to fabricate a new pivot hinge incorporating a slot at one end to compensate for the thickness of the wood if you want it to fold.

Thomas Davidson i may have to at a later point but i just made mine solid for now. Still tilts back so you can dump the cargo but no folding for me

I figure you have it all sorted by now ( 09-30-20 ). After watching a million videos I figure to build mine upside down on a table and bolt everything to the 4x8 plywood using the plywood to make sure everything is square. Things would be waist high for the most part. Also will be using a shoulder bolt at the tongue pivot point. Did yours come with a title and serial number ? Reinforcing the a frame side to side at the tongue where the jack mounts can save some grief later. Tom in Az.

Thomas Davidson mine did come with a title and vin. The store clerk handed me title at time of purchase. That would be a good idea to bolt it to the plywood. I made mine so it doesn’t actually fold. It’s one solid piece of plywood. I used 1/4 OSB with 3/8’’ bolts to mate it to the frame.

I have the 1,750 lb trailer I’m putting together right now. I’ve been watching others videos for guidance and one thing I don’t understand is that I have 6 bolts protruding from each half (corners and two where the support bars connect to the sides near the tire locations). My instructions specifically say to put them there but I see you don’t have them. Are the cross bars only bolted on the underside? I’m currently trying to trouble shoot the ply wood placement situation.

Hey Edwin, I’m not sure I totally understand the question. However, I will try you best to answer: on my trailer, the crossbars are bolted to the side frame, Then the plywood is bolted to the crossbars. I didn’t bolt the caster wheels on the trailer because I didn’t plan on folding it. I’m happy to try and help the best I can. Thanks for watching the video!

@@rudysquest Sorry I typed that super late and half asleep! Basically in my instructions, I have a bolt and nut on the top and bottom of each corner/connection. So on the back half of my trailer I have 6 bolt heads facing upwards and on the front half of the trailer I have the same (6 bolt heads facing upwards). You only have four upward facing bolt heads which are only at the four corners of each half of the frame. So I was curious if you only bolted the underside of each cross bar so the top was flatter for the plywood or if your instructions didn’t call for a bolt on the top. I’m having a hell of a time trying to figure out the best way to put a floor on this thing because there are so many upward facing bolt heads (12 total for the whole trailer).

@@mynamesedwin no worries!! I understand what you are saying now. I did leave a few off so that i could bolt the plywood down. Otherwise the corners would lift up and probably ruin the plywood. I used those same holes to then bolt the plywood and cross bars together.

@@rudysquest Ahhh I gotcha. Thank you; I thought I was losing my mind with that flooring. I ended up cutting 6 holes where the bolts protrude so the board could lay flat. Ended up working out. Thanks for your info and video! I might make my own too.

How u suppose to tilt trailer with lights so tight

  • @rudysquest

Great question: so i actually ran the wiring through the bottom part of the frame and the trailer can still tilt back. I don’t really use it for tilting but there is enough there. I don’t however fold this trailer like it was made. I made it a static trailer - didn’t really need it to fold

Yeah, the back of the trailer hits the ground when you tilt. It’s a pretty decent tilt. Flipping the light brackets or moving them might help if you tilt often

Sir, Did you removed all the grease from the wheel bearings, and put new grease on them because I just bought the same trailer, and did some research on it, and it states to do so. Please get back with me. Thanks

Hey! I didn’t replace the grease. I am eventually going to replace the hubs with bearing buddies and then replace the grease. I haven’t had time to do it yet.

Are they available with 5 lug wheels ?

Thomas Davidson they do make a 5 lug trailer with a higher capacity. I think it’s about 1700lb vs the one i built at about 1200 lbs.
