Building a 1500 sq.ft off-grid cabin: Finishing the interior
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I just began building a bicycle trailer wood fired hot tub! Link to part 1 below :)
• Building a Wood Fired ...
This 1500sq ft. cabin was built in the mountains and wilderness near Golden British Columbia Canada in just 56 days, with an additional 40 spent on the interior. The cabin will be off-grid and powered using a 9 KW home-made hydro generator located on the properties small creek.
I will be releasing individual videos that take a deeper dive into each aspect covered in this summary on a more scheduled basis as to not leave you hanging for another 8 months.
FULL STORY
My Grandfather and master log worker decided he would be building one last off-grid cabin as he gets older. My brother, seizing the opportunity purchased land in the Canadian Rockies so that the three of us could embark on this huge project together.
It began last fall with me and my grandfather arriving at a clear building site. Me being very ignorant to the arduous journey ahead. I purchased a crane, my brother purchased the logs and we were off. it took 56 full days in a row to erect the walls and roof of the cabin.
As soon as they were built we packed up and left faster than we arrived. Canada then experienced one of the coldest winters on record with no trips taken out to the shell of the cabin until May 1st.
Me and my brother arrived back at the cabin with an entirely new mind set, and so did my Grandfather. We got to work hard, with the valley waking up from its winter hibernation all around us. We had a resident black bear that kept us company, and a swallow that took a particular liking to me.
Building this off-grid cabin was difficult, it was long, and it was an experience like none other. As the largest project (by far) that I have ever completed it has been a blessing and a honour to share the experience with you, and so many of you at that.
If you would like to build an off-grid cabin for yourself or you would like to ask any further questions please reach out either through my website or email me

What a fantastic breath of fresh air from KZread. No sensationalism, no clickbait, NO ADVERTISING (I LOVE THAT) 👏 Well done. Just a shame this kind of content is a dying breed on here.
I am new subscriber to your channel. I first want to start off by saying I am a native New Yorker and child from parents who immigrated from the Dominican Republic in the early 60's. I have watched other inspirational videos from people building off grid log cabins. And I have to say Canadians have a different type of Spirit about them. What ever that quality is I can't find the right word to articulate how inspiring Canadians can be. Congratulations on completing your log cabin and may it bring your Grandfather pure joy and fulfillment. Thanks for sharing this video and your family story.
I've been in many cabins, but never one with a spiral staircase. Hats off to you gentlemen.
9:31 most satisfying window reveal, look at the view!

one of the best log cabins
Just watched your first vid build and commented on the comments..haha.., the ones here are more intelligible. great work...to finish off my last comments, working in the industry back in the day restoring old log structures and doing a few new builds you guys and girls bring back good memories; we traveled throughout Alberta in those days...proud of our builds but more so the smaller ones. One of our last accomplishments...largest log building in Western Canada 38K per floor under the guidance of Bernard Warner I was his 2IC. well, why not finish a career in style. We drew a crew of 30 sometime 40 when the real good guys wanted to put in a full day in any given week with most on chain saws. (War story..lol ) Very monumental and yes Oil tycoon. Panoramic view back side of Calgary.., Just too big, grotesque a quick stat here is 300 foot of wall in 30 ft log lengths and 115 saddles per row 20 high maybe more in half wall 2nd floor. yup over 75K without the log swimming pool which has got to be problematic now with moisture who knows Bernard was inventive. I am guessing now, he did not need the basement underground bomb shelter maybe now he may have been visionary but take note the logs will stand the test of time. and next to the wine cellar but the gallery overlooking the squash court, my favorite game at the time. however, they lost the whole perspective, even then, no charm but the log work was and still is tremendous. Your build is perfect. love it. Particularly chuckled watching the drill mishaps (hitting the nail) putting up the railing and the miscalculation on assembly. Did you know Murphy's law was around on our build too.? Who the hell was Murphy, he must have been a real screw up..LOL. Nice Job...I have a few pointers..going to look you guys up in 2020, need some help now and couple 45-degree saddles as well, those are fun ...lol ..need to get back to nature and my roots .. Wonderful Cheers
These guys are killer with a chain saw and just about anything else!!! I love this cabin and the views are spectacular!
Man, what a wonderful project to complete together as a family...well done!!!
Light tree is a beautiful idea and a wanderful design
wow, that cabin with that view! a place to be proud of!
this is actually very calming to watch.
Superb! The house, your work, the whole idea. Loved watching every second of it ♥️ All the best to you guys!!
What I like the most, is how you guys fulfilled your grandpa's wish... If today's societies would respect and honor their seniors more often, this would be a better place. Regards from the other end of the american continent.
This rug really ties the room JL
When I saw the notification on my laptop, I dropped what I was doing, made myself a coffee and sat down to enjoy your vid. The cabin looks amazing! The chandelier is my favourite piece...a work of art that you would pay a small fortune for here in London. You've inspired me. I have a huge Black Poplar in my tiny garden that needs cutting back, and I'm sitting here looking at a branch that just might be suitable for the job. I hope you've got more of these vids lined up!

Wow! Great to hear from you! You're a big part of the reason I make videos like this. I really hope you make something out of that tree in your back yard. Even the chandelier wouldn't be too difficult. If you do please send me pictures! I would love to see what you make. Especially out of black poplar

@@MountainFireWoodworks Great to hear from you too, made my day. It's an indigenous tree and there are fewer than 200 left in southern England. The rare Poplar Hawk Moth (a big beauty!) only breeds in these trees, so I feel blessed to have it in the tiny patch I call my garden. It's 13ft by 20ft, not too bad for the centre of London, don't you think? The neighbours have been complaining and trying to get it removed for years, but it's going nowhere while I'm living here. It's a real haven for the small birds and squirrels around here. Seriously though, you've got real skills and creativity that most people envy. I come from a large Irish family of eight siblings and I love watching you all work together.
Wow! I remember watching you guys build this. You guys are very gifted. The finish product is amazing.
The light is beautiful!
Nice work, fellas. Thank you for documenting the project - it’s very helpful. Bonus points for not editing-out the part where wifey chastises your approach to the loft banister. Sometimes my wife delivers the best advice when I least expect it and need it the most. She sounds like a winner- hope y’all enjoyed the finished cabin.
Perfect location, gorgeous cabin, and beautiful family. All the hard work will pay dividends to all of you in the form of healthy living and priceless memories. Special mention to your awesome dog. 🐕
Its the work of artists...there's no words to express such admiration for all the hard woodwork!!!!!!
one of the best thing a man can do..his home..so beautiful guys, amazing work, thank you, two videos rock!
How did you get power up there? I don't see any solar panels or anything. Or the water. Or just all the equipment? Did you buy that plot of land and get a building permit? Did you have the ground analysed for stability? What is the insulation value of those logs? How did you insulate, wind proof the floor? How did you run electrical and plumbing? Or the ventilation of the bathroom and kitchen? Did you have a machine to strip the branches off of the logs? Do they all grow that straight? How many did you have to cut to have enough of the right thickness? What's the tolerance on that? How much did this all cost? How does it compare to regular builds? Did you do the usual landscaping, foundation work? Are there other interesting things or pitfalls, problems with this sort of build?
What a great video, I enjoyed how you showed things going together (even though it was sped up) I really enjoyed the dog. I knew Border collies were smart but I had no idea they knew how to add subtitles to videos. :-) I also liked that you gal's knew how to help out and work with tools. They had a really good dads. Anyway, thank you so much for allowing us into your world. Its a really beautiful world by the way.
