One good tip for first timers is before putting the hour hand on, set the time on the watch just until the date changes. That way the hour hand goes on at 12 just as the date would change making the date change more accurate.

You are so professional while working on watches. I inherited a Rolex from a dear friend. We were both in the service, me Marine and he was a Vietnam vet and was my hero. I got to take care of him the last 3 years. I got stage 4 tonsil cancer and he saved my life, I helped him back. I inherited his Rolex 16234 36 mm cream stick dial, white gold bezel. It means the world to me. I beat the cancer with my support staff. I'm blessed. I think you could help me. I want to take his 16234 and have you make a stament piece with US Marine colors and use the white gold bezel. Is this something you could do? I look forward to see many more of your videos. I am not a watchmaker but can't it accidentally break the watch when changing the day when the hands are at vulnerable position (during the day change)? I know this watch was for yourself but if someone who didn't know it had the day ring removed, turned it in wrong direction wondering what it does breaking the watch.

It’s an old video. However. Start with your movement of choice. Search for that. Then the dial, hands and case to match. That is the best way to do it. Remember to match the hand sizes to the movement as well as the diameter of the dial. A 40mm case should use slightly shorter hands then a 42mm case.

Ok... I’ve seen this many times... It isn’t necessarily the watch but, a problem with one of two things... Either the setting position, or the clutch system is not seated correctly, or, the clutch or setting gears may be worn... Typically, they are just out of position. Sometimes, wearing the watch and setting and winding it a few times will re-seat them. Other times, you may have to open up the watch and manually re-seat them. It happens to ETA, Valjoux and Rolex movements also... Hope that helps...

  • @watchesandjewelry

One other thing to try... Remove the winding system from the watch if you can. Run it, Set it, and then re install the winding system. That may also fix the problem.

If you are going to do a custom watch, the list is simple. Watchmakers screwdriver set, case back tool, a way to trim the stem (drummel). Case screws and clamps. I also recommend watch hand tools to push the hands on, either plastic or rubber. Gloves to handle the parts and a good pad to work on. Not pricy at all. Tools to assemble a watch like this should be less than 75.00 us

I do not properly understand the pin shortening exercise. I realize that you have to, but I do not understand what is the right length or why. I am practical - 30 plus years in engineering and I have built several successful racing engines from bare cases. Nobody has satisfactorily explained to me yet what shortening the pin does or why the right length is the right length. I understand that the aim is to be able to pull out an unscrewed crown to set date and time, also that the crown should screw on without crushing the pin solid. I've just destroyed my first Chinese movement through tightening a crown with a pin that I hadn't shortened enough, and I have every chance or destroying the next one I have ordered too, because I cannot grasp what I am trying to do. To push the pin into normal running position, the crown spring has to bottom out, but then how can there be spare length left so that the pin is only spring loaded when you tighten the crown in? I don't get how there can suddenly be some spare length to wind the crown in (without crushing the pin solid) and yet still enough length to push in the pin in to the normal running position with the crown spring fully bottomed out. Probably dumb questions for some of you experts, but I am told that the mark of a true expert is an ability to explain the complex in such a way that it seems easy. Hoping someone can help and possibly save another watch movement from being speared through the heart.

  • @watchesandjewelry

Lol. Not a dumb question. Cases ship with a crown. Movements come with the stem. The stem of a watch is designed to work the clutch inside the watch movement. Stems are therefore made long so that they can be used with different diameter case sizes. Because of that, you have long stems that need to be trimmed to fit the case with its crown. I.e. the length of the stem would be longer on a watch case that is 50 mm wide as opposed to a 40mm case. On some watches trimming even requires that a waterproof crown has an extra 2 mm so that the spring in the crown can push and tighten down allowing for the stem to remain in a fixed position when tightening. My explanation almost warrants a video. Lol. But your question is a good one.

@@watchesandjewelry Hi Peter- thanks for the reply. My bewilderment was a little more subtle than that, but I think the penny finally dropped at around 8pm UK time last night. When you insert your shortened pin, if you press the detente, then the partially compressed crown spring still has enough force to drive the pin fully home to "watch normal running position". Then if you have cut the pin to the right length, the crown will still have enough axial clearance from the case threads in order to permit watch winding without any thread engagement. A little pressure on the crown will then engage it with the case threads to allow it to be snugged to the case and the crown spring ensures that there is only ever a light spring force on the pin and that it is never solid. In my case I believe that my pin was still cut 1mm to 1.5mm too long. So I was still able to engage the crown to case threads, but part way down the spring bottomed out (and in my eagerness I was too ham-fisted to notice) and so unfortunately I drove the pin too far into the movement. I have a new movement on the way and effectively a spare pin as I am 99.9% sure that my old one is still too long. I will enjoy dissecting the damaged movement, safe in the knowledge that it is already wrecked! Kind Regards - Jason

You didn't build a 'fake' Rolex. I've got a Citizen watch that looks like a Rolex. Is my watch fake? No, because it says "Citizen' on the dial and not Rolex. The maker is not trying to pass it off a Rolex and neither am I. A fake is something that's not made by Rolex, but it's got Rolex printed on the dial, and the seller and/or owner tries to pass it off as a genuine Rolex. What you've got there is a Rolex 'style' watch. Nothing wrong with that. BTW, nice vid, straight to the point with no padding.

@@watchesandjewelry Point is that Rolex no longer holds patents on most of its movements/cases and neither do they have copyright protection as regards the style of their watches...except for their company logo and name. Anyone can copy the 'look' of a Rolex as long as they are not using the Rolex name/logo, and are not trying to pass it off as a genuine Rolex. It's not illegal or unethical. You wanna talk fake? Donald Trump is a fake successful business man and fake competent president. That's an example of a fake, someone passing himself off as something he's not...lol.
